I wish Bitmain would stop setting the price by USD and just stick with BTC.

They actually do both, depending on whichever provides them the most profit with respect to exchange rate fluctuation.

Yes, I was aware of that, but thank you for stating the obvious anyway.

Seems like everyone is running their S9s in controlled environments?  Can anyone who is hosting this summer in non-ideal conditions answer the question?

 - What is the approx hottest ambient temp you can run an S9?

I have a room that is exhausted has 4 s7's 1 s9 running. The room temp gets to about 100 degrees. That's as hot as I allow it to get. I have under clocked a few s7's to 650. I live right outside of Philadelphia.

And fuck I have a dead hash board on my new batch 10.

So for third time in two years I will need to do an rma.

FIRST  two times were really not good experiences.

It hashed for about two or three hours  and then a row of x's

I know all the tricks , lower freq no go.  different pcie cables no go. Different psu's no go.

So I will document the process on this thread. Lets see how well it works out.

That is terrible luck.

Did you try reseating or replacing the data cable to the bad board?

When I set up my B10 yesterday I was visually inspecting the data cables when I noticed that one of them looked tweaked and slightly angled on the controller board (not quite perpendicular). I pulled it and reseated it before even powering the S9 up.

I wasn't able to get it much straighter, so I crossed my fingers and powered it up. It worked fine thankful. It's been running since yesterday around 7 PM.

Anyway, I'd be willing to bet that some of these data connectors or sockets are not completely reliable.

If swapping a data cable doesn't help, maybe you could try cabling the bad hash board to a different S9 controller. I've heard about someone else with 4 hash boards running on one controller.

Welcome to the club.
My counts is:
1x D.O.A. non center board
4x dead center board

Total 5 dead S9 boards from 63 boards
and the last miners have not yet arrived.

Okay most people do not know all four jacks on the board can hash.

It is at the solar array about three miles from my house.

I know all the tricks.
Take known good cable from with of the two good boards and switch with the bad board. = dead board

and the suspect cable worked on other board.  So that means not the cable.

Next take known good board and plug it in to the jack of the bad board  known good board works in that jack.  So that means not the jack.

Next swap known good psu with the "bad" s9

same problem same spot

and the psu  I swapped works on other s9.

test voltage on all pcie cables all are 12.1 volts   which leaves me bad board.

that would be 1 bad board of 18 boards  about 5.5% fail rate.

It is not that I mind  a failed board.
It is not that I mind paying shipping into them. 110 to 149
It is not that I mind waiting since they don't cross ship  I guess 30 to 45 in lost mining.

that would mean a 200 dollar loss if and this is what I mind if they give me back a good board.

so:
If I do nothing I lose 470-485 usd.
If I  go for replacement and they send one pretty fast I lose 200.
If I go for replacement and they fuck me I lose 635.

those are the three choices I am inclined to pull the dead board and donate to sidehack.  Maybe it helps him  learn how to hack the gear.

I sent him a pm waiting on his answer.

BTW choice 2 is easy if I knew they would send me a new board.

I rather have choice four send them 300- 400 for a new working board.

Ah, in your original post you mentioned PCIe cables but not data cables. I should have figured that you'd already tried swapping data cables.

Sorry about the bad board. What a total pain.

Bitmain's quality control seems especially bad now. I guess it's all about money, not quality.

Lack of competition gives them little need to improve. People will buy anyway because they are the only game in town.

I'm wondering when I'm going to see a board failure now. If I do, I just hope it quietly dies and doesn't set the rack on fire.

Bitmaintech has such a shit warranty plan.  That I ended up putting thousands of dollars into gpu mining.  Not that I think eth coin is better then btc coin.

But all my warranties are dead solid good from real companies .

I have returned  1 CPU that burned up first Intel that ever burned.  Guess what a new one in my house in under nine days. I have return six of forty five gpus to Amazon guess what no questions asked.
I returned 1 of sixteen mobos after nine months and gigabyte replaced it.

My first two issues with bitmaintech were bad then worse.
So here is my third issue.  Unfortunately they failed to take my advice on how to handle warranty issues.

So now I will post and complain and bitch and moan for months but  more important I will compare gpu mining to btc mining over and over again .  Which in turn will just cost them sales.

I would have ten more s-9 units and no eth rigs if there was proper service for dead gear.

But there the king of ASIC mining and they do not mind losing a  sale of 10 or more units .

Very sad, at the very least they should be looking after a prominent member of the community like yourself... that being said, they should look after everybody the same if they actually cared about how their business looked. It's a bit disappointing seeing how far BM have fallen, they used to be great but now that they don't have any competition; they don't need to care - which to me says a lot about their owner but that's beside the point...

I don't mind that they charge for shipping it in.  But the idea they can say no and I spend 110 to 150 for shipping is annoying.

I will find the spare cables I have to connect hash board to controller maybe  I get lucky

This is small consolation but it is a good bet that sooner or later you will be able to buy a replacement hashboard from bitmainwarranty if you wanted.  You might also just see if they can fix it.  Shipping to them will cost much less.

Yeah I'm not spending over 100 to ship it to Hong Kong .

I will pester Yoshi from bitmainwarranty. See what he can do.

I've got the power budget for another S9 but I'm not going to risk any more Bitmain purchases.

Hopefully Avalon will ship something competitive in the not too distant future.

Yeah with Avalon  when I killed a board  he just sold one to me no muss no fuss.

We can add 10 amps at 240 volts to the array  maybe 11 amps..

Sorry to hear your loss, phil. My B12 will arrive later next week and I hope I don't fall into this shitty hole.

This is small consolation but it is a good bet that sooner or later you will be able to buy a replacement hashboard from bitmainwarranty if you wanted.  You might also just see if they can fix it.  Shipping to them will cost much less.

Yeah I would try the US company too.

Yea I wouldn't hold your breath there either.  Hey @yoshi when you going to send my s7 parts I ordered over a month ago now.  Wtf man!  Seriously your going to make me do a chargeback!!  Make damn sure you pay them with cc Phil

Best regards
