On the S9 controller there is two fan connectors but the board have place for 6 others fans connectors.
Do you know if these connectors placeholder receive power? If yes would it be possible to add fan connectors.
Here is an idea for a quieter miner. Remove the case and have 2 fans pointing directly at each blade sideways. So the fans would be pointing directly over the heatsink. With this setup I'm sure it would be possible to use lower cfm fans (quieter). 6 quiet fans is a lot better than 2 jet engines. Anyone tried this?
If the controller cannot power more than 2 fans it is possible to use a 1-to-3 splitter to power 3 fans per connector.
The case serves a cooling function too - directs airflow and probably dissipates heat as well. I would be very careful with a mod like that. Among other issues you'd likely have hot air getting mixed back into intake. I posted this earlier in the thread, but I think it got lost in the excitement of new S9s. With the original S1s, there was a mod that worked quite nicely. You could take them apart and put a 200mm fan on each blade to cool them effectively but silently: https://imgur.com/a/RUAX5I did this with my old S1, and it worked amazingly. The miner ran at full speed, with a better temp than the factory fans, and it was totally silent unless you were standing right next to the fans. I'm going to wait another month or so until my warranty expires, then I'm going to try the same thing with my S9. Particularly with the thermal throttling built into the S9s that protects them from overheating, I'm confident this will make for a better mining experience. My only concern is finding another "base" for the third module in the S9s.

S9's firmware package with bmminer's binary application file is in preparing, Need get some files from ALTERA FPGA's project. We will upload the sdk of S9 which can be used to create S9's firmware package. The estimation time is about next week.
Please feel free to contact us if there is any question.
Best regards, Andy Bitmain I got a response back from their support department, looks like they should be uploading the S9 firmware SDK next week.

I have this tid bit of information about what they have done. http://kano.is/BMMMP63278.pdfI guess the fact that they have ignored a patent isn't unexpected ... though personally I'm certainly not a fan of patents

Will report how it works when finished.

Anyone seen a link for the source code?
It's now been about a month and the code should be available by now, otherwise they're ignoring the cgminer license ...
It would appear that by renaming it to "bmminer" they intend to pretend that it's not cgminer at all... And they are pretending. When I ran 'strings' on bmminer it was clear that in fact is cgminer, maybe with slight modifications. If they haven't provided the source, they are in breach of the GPLv3. Not that any of us is likely to spend our time and money to go after them. Maybe the FSF would be interested. Seems like Bitcoin as a concept is generally in line with the ideals behind the FSF.

For now, downclocking is indeed what I've done. With my batch 1 S9, I have it set at 556 with 40% fan, and it runs about 5 degrees hotter than yours at a steady 11.9GH/s, rarely edging up towards 12GH/s. It's still noisier than I'd like, but it's tolerable at that level.

Bitmain,
Can you guarantee that no spy code/ wormhole is mixed with the BMminer ? Why on earth do you not provide SDK for us to check our self what is hidden in the source code.. For me it sounds like its a modified CGminer since you do not provide the needed info.

Hi All, Can you use 14 Gauge extension cords (max amp 15) with these S9's. I know the instructions say that these machines are 20 amps so i wanted to see what the rest of you guys were doing extension cord-wise. Thanks a bunch, MM333

You might want elaborate on this just a bit. When I hear "extension cord", I tend to think of the a "house power" kind of cord which would usually be 120V (USA) or 220V (Europe). In which case the "20 Amp" reference might not make much sense. If you are thinking of the PCIe cords from the PSU to the miner, then the 20 AMPs makes more sense. Besides the 14Gauge cable, the pins need to be high quality, fit tight, and have all the pins wired with the 14 Gauge wire. I saw one ad, that advertised 12 Gauge wire, but when you looked closely, it only actually wire one of the +12V and one Ground. That would have been a disaster not because of the wire gauge, but the fact that all the power was going though one pin effectively.

Had a S9 batch 8 arrive today. Ethernet lights flash, it won't hash and I can't login through my browser. I've tried different power supplies, Ethernet cables etc. anyway to boot with a sd card? I can't seem to find it on bitmains website for the s9.

Thx for the feedback. I'm referring to the standard 14 gauge extension cords that you'd buy from Home Depot. The 20 amp was referring to the max amperage that is written on the extension cord packaging

same here, had to reset 2 s7. wait about 5 min after you power it up and then hold the reset button for ten seconds.. i waited about a minute or two powered it down and back up. (this was on s7) not sure if the reset procedure is the same for s9 but id imagine so. Ohh and dealing with ups is like eating a soup sandwich if you know what i mean. s9 stuck in kentucky no mans land. dealt with brokerage last couple days. First message i got from them was they were able to obtain my deferment # and they were moving along.. i check later that day to see it was a couple other packages i ordered not the s9.. so they got stuck longer. Uff what do ya do. have to just wait it out i guess ohh and they getting me for 34$ for two s9. i dont understand why this number is so all over the place. the hidden fees they dont tell you about when shipping .. They look like the best option till they get you with those. Best Regards d57heinz
