You can learn for free to code/create coins, knowledge is free. but you wouldn't be successful if you create just another coin, instead building services around bitcoin would be profitable.

Altcoins and mining altcoins are both good ideas but you need to do your research.

Yes totally agree, I also feel how being a victim of various HYIP programs. About 5 BTC have lost and made me very angry, I suggest for a safe investment.
