if i understand the system correctly, you can be verified sooner, you just have to ask for it in the appropriate thread

Not much. There are better ways to block bots.

The Chinese/Russian spammers are a slightly bigger problem, but not big enough to warrant these stupid methods that no other web site uses and that also deflect people who have a life.
