The Newbie restrictions make sense. Enough time to deter / make spamming more difficult, but not so much time or so many posts as to overly deter Newbies from joining and taking part in the Bitcoin community.

Also there is value in the Newbie section itself, from the definitions post, security posts, and the like.

Care to explain how you determined not only that the rules are good, but also that the choice of 5 posts and 4 hours is optimal?

Do you know any other web site with such rules?

Do you know other web sites that have no such rules, but are, to your utter disbelief, still free of spam?

The restrictions are fair, but the getting 4 hours logged in is annoying because you have to keep reloading/changing pages for it to realise your are online On the plus side, I only need 30 more minutes until I'm outta here!

While the Newbie posting makes sense in that deters Trolls, isn't there a more interesting way to disincentive Trolls instead of making folks be longed on for 4 hour and make at least 5 posts.

I wonder if we could use the power of Bitcoin to solve the Trolling issue. Such as members of the forum needing to donate some fractional amount of BTC in order to move out of the Newbie area. That way if a Troll is setting up accounts and getting himself booted on a regular basis he is losing money. Right now any persistant Troll just has to slap up 5 random posts in the Newbie section and wait 4 hours for each account he creates.

We are the Bitcoin community after all and BTCs can be used for much more than exchanging and storing value, I hear of folks thinking of creative way of fixing titles and important records and all kinds of stuff to a BTC.

Anyone think this a good idea for really solving the trolling issue? I look forward to your thoughts.

I'm finding it hard to find threads in the newbie section to add to.  I only generally post when I have something to add that hasn't already been said.  I understand the reasoning behind the limit, but in some ways I feel like the best way to get to the minimum posts is just to write a couple of meaningless posts just to get to the minimum.

Yeah I Agree. But playing by the rules is ok.. I manage to get out to newbie section in about a day..

Sounds like a plan to me.  I have been reading these boards for about a year, but just never signed up.  I signed up to post because there's a discussion I want to contribute to in the "real" forums.  I guess having to wait a few days to do so won't be the end of the world, but if I could send 0.1 BTC or so to bypass that process, I'd probably do so.

You'd frame it as a "donation", and of course you can't make it required for the forums, otherwise it's bitcoin holders only, and critics or curious people wouldn't get a word in.  Still it'd be useful for many like me and maybe help fund the site a bit.

I think it is a very good idea. Ƀ0.1 seems like a good point to start.

Something like that newbies must deserve their membership and can get its perks, as avatar of his/her choice uploaded or the link in signature.
Hope I can get all coins soon by productive posting!

It doesn't seem that unrealistic to be able to post five times and log four hours in one day...

Just leave it logged in and you could easily do five posts in under an hour

Not for dickheads who have nothing better to do. Probably also not for hired spammers who live in low-wage countries and are paid a few pennies for the job.

It deters only people who have a life. That is apparently the intention.
