The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

Forums are lame. But looks like sometimes an active account might be worthwhile.

the newbie restrictions seem to create a lot of spam as newbies post just to get their post count up...

I understand the need to deal with trolls. Yet, can't we come up with a verification system or quick way to deal with trolls that doesn't require taking away precious development time just to gain access to a forum?
./ is 1000 times more open, has their occasional troll, yet is very successful without asking new people to go through this many hoops.

This is an understandable precaution. Most forums have some kind of restriction similar to this.

My contribution to this thread, filling random letters to make my 2nd post.
Seriously, he 5 post rule is quite ineffective, any spam bot can do it. Also nothing will stop human spammers and trolls to make this posts, this is what they do for living.
The 4h online time can be an effective tool against bots, I give you that.
A good forum is a moderated forum, with reasonable use of the ban hammer. I find this forum WAAY too big, and this particular thread humongous.

Due to a mass of trolling, only established posters are able to post in non-newbie sections. You are considered "established" if you have spent 4 hours online and have made 5 posts (new topics or replies). If you have really good posts, you can post a request for preemptive whitelisting in the appropriate topic. Also: - Newbies cannot upload their own avatars. - You must have made one post in order to send PMs. - You need 10 posts to put a link in your signature. Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted. (The system automatically checks every 10 minutes and promotes people as appropriate.) It took me four hours just to find these restrictions. I had no idea why I couldn't post, or that there was a newbie area. Perhaps we can make this more pronounced when a newbie is logged in?

The restrictions are sort of annoying but I do understand why they're there. Working on getting outta the newbie section.
