Nice

R9 280X finally broke the 300 H/S barrier with 11.1

Great WORK!!!

Is there any way to drop the power usage for the 280/280x/380s? They are just so damn hungry.

Has anyone found a reliable bios mod for the Sapphire rx 480 8g cards that reduces power but keeps the h/s rate respectable?  Most of what I have found on forums have been unstable.  I have 4 rigs with 6x Sapphire 8g 480's that each run at around 1200w (and I have a 1300w psu) and 11.5A  and deliver 260 H/s on each card with the stock bios and I am having to reduce their intensity each time the mining software speeds the mining up or the whole platform shuts down due to exceeding power limits.  I have played with different power tools such as Watttool (Wattman is useless for multiple cards and settings in Claymore just freeze my systems) but I am a bit of an inexperienced computer user so I am not sure what to try and I don't want to damage my systems.  I have read every page of this forum as I have worked through all the same issues with Open CL and cards not being recognized, and I appreciate the degree this forum supplies ideas and methods to help others work through their issues.  So I am asking my first question around suggested settings in Watt tool or perhaps even a stable and capable bios mod that keeps power down while not giving up on the current performance, if possible.  Any help is appreciated.

why not just download MSI afterburner, and bring voltage down to about -75mv to start off, see if its stable.  1200w is too much !  By undervolting you'll get a lot of power savings.

Is there a 'chart' somewhere for undervolting? I have a mix of 390/290/290x/380/280 etc. and would love to find a way to undervolt them to save power but don't really want to do it 'card by card'.

Or am I better off just using Wattman to drop the power 'safely' to wherever each rig will run without crashing?

Well you can use this method:

Launch the Task Scheduler.
Go to Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/Update Orchestrator.
Right-click on the task named Reboot.
Select Disable.

I think the task scheduler also allows you to kill the update process completely by disabling it as well. Same as using regedit but more 'noob friendly' since you don't have to chase registry values.

So no ASM for 480?  Or is it not worth it due to driver limitations? From what I read 16.12 is slower than 16.11, at least prev versions. Anyone know speed diff on 11.1 with these drivers?  I get ~260-265 on 480 8GB 1290/2000, 1750 strap, i8.  It is algorithm 2, no ASM apparently.

I think the easiest way to disable auto updates is through the group policy editor.  Only need to select automatic updates and switch it to disabled.

280 now hashing at 233 sol.
11.1
gigabyte r280x stock bios 1100/1500 (i = 4, ttli = 75, bad cooler, win 10 x64 ltsb 1607 vga driver autoupdate) = 248...260
gigabyte 7950 bios F43 (1.09 V) 1050/1500 (i = 4, ttli = 75, win 10 x64 pro 1607, vga driver autoupdate) = 258...262
gigabyte 7950 bios F43 (1.09 V) 1100/1500 (i = 4, ttli = 75, win 10 x64 pro 1607, vga driver autoupdate) = 258...265

There is a feeling that the motherboard RAM settings (frequency and timings) affect performance. And not always in the direction of overclock.

Here are the results after a few years, still very stable.

Basically the 7970 and 280x are faster or just as fast as a stock r9 290.

I had to revert the r9 290 back to stock clock since it started locking up at 1050/1450.

What AMD driver do you use to get that from your 7970?

when I turn the monitor off
For AMD driver:
Power settings -> Monitor off = Always on. (New driver by default turn off vga performance, if you monitor offline or you see fullscreen video)

i use 295x2 to mining, now hashing at 560 sol, this normal?
that seems to be low for 2x290s a single 290x is over 300 sols
seems normal. my 290x does 340 but is modded as a 390x. before was doing in the 280 range
