Mining was profitable at one time when bitcoin was announced and not much people had joined the pools. But now there is very high competition with mining farms and big rigs that you cant make much use of mining rigs on your own with little CPU power.

Altcoin trading is good but risky as well. You never know which altcoin may rise even above bitcoin in future or vice-versa - dips so much that you are at a negative profit on selling.
