did anyone else get the may 1st newsletter about them shipping 20 units of batch #2?

Yes:

Lots things to update.

1. We are currently investigating on the three or so shipments that have shown up badly damaged to the customers. They do no appear to be simple delivery damage: they are not dents but some corners of some of the units have been snapped off. It takes a great amount of force to snap 3mm aluminum that's been bolted down with 0.9mm screws in a box with foam padding. We are not ruling out the possibility of sabotage.

In future, when receiving an Avalon package, if there is any rattling sound coming from inside, open the package in front of DHL/EMS and inspect the inside, if there is damage immediately return the package to the sender. The receiver must submit the complaint so us, the shipper can receive this information from DHL/EMS and we can investigate.

Do not worry, even if DHL/EMS does not compensate for the damages, once you send the damaged unit back, we will send you a replacement free of charge.

2. Our new SMT equipment has arrived, it is expected to be tweaked and fully functional by the second week of May. Expect an updated gallery of our facility soon. In the mean time we are going to send out ~20 units through our new shipping channels and test the waters. We expect to go full throttle once the new SMT line comes online.

3. We also recently released a new firmware that is our most stabled version yet, it also increases the performance by about 2Gh/s and lowers idle power consumption, see the wiki for full details. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Avalon#20130419

p.s. few people in the Avalon team is sick, so we are moving rather slow at the moment.

employed sick? Wtf I should care? Is it my fault?

You should care if the company you ordered from only has 3 core employees and a bunch of hired assembly help which is not able to make their own decisions. If one of those 3 falls ill or spins into a depression, then the whole system grinds to a halt. A lot of start-ups I deal with are one man shops or small teams and it's a common problem.

On the one hand it's nice to deal with a specialized small company because they get things done in little time due the lack of structure. On the other hand, if things go wrong, everything freezes up.

Random speculation: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=190230.msg1993733#msg1993733

If you don't want to run that risk, order from a company that has 20 employees or more.

sabotage? It seems like the excuse of the dog that eats the homework at school.. In any case who care? We want the units for which we paid, not excuses

There is not much one can do once packages are handed over a transporter, other than keep your fingers crossed that they are not going to get abused too much. They are all psychopaths in white vans and in the sorting centers, tossing around packages is a world class sport. Perhaps a design change (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=156323.msg1894368#msg1894368) could make the impact of eh impact after falling less disastrous, but other than replacing units that have been mistreated, there is not much Avalon can do. That is why packages are sent with insurance... and if I read the news letter correctly, that is what they offer.

Instead of opening the packages in front of the driver, you can sign off on the delivery but write 'without prejudice for damages' ("schade onder voorbehoud") which gives you the opportunity to check for damages and complain later.

I am glad to have bought some Asic hardware from AsicMiner, that is the only company that is not telling bullshits to his customers so far.

Good luck with the return on your investment, with equipment 6 to 7 times more expensive in BTC price. Even if you do get it up and running in 3 weeks, that is quite a steep investment to recoup.

I really do not agree with you.
I think what you said make  sense if you don't pay in advance.
If you don't pay, ok, you can wait.
If you pay you have all the rights to complain. You have to.
I am not an investor and I am not investing in the startup of a company. I am a customer who has paid for a service that has not been delivered.

As far as my AsicMiner hardware I just wanted to have it. And very satisfied to receive it as promised.  Price wasn't a problem to me.

Those who paid for batch #1 and batch #2 definitely invested in the start-up of Avalon, it was clearly stated they needed the BTC to develop the product in the first place.

As for batch #3 I think it's debatable. You bought batch #3?

Very generously of you to be willing to pay the extra BTC for the ASICminer hardware, I got my dividends as a shareholder and will invest those again into the next batch of Avalon ;-)

Honestly I bought from another guy who orderder, batch 2 anyway, and this delay is good for my blades.
What I am trying to say is  that these companies, for my point of view, have no knowledge of what is customer care. And this is not matter of size but mentality. I have orders in BFL that have 7 months now!! Fully paid!!
Anyway I think they can employ some other people... (some hundred in China probably) with the money they have collected..
Btw this is my personal point of view, I think we don't have to bore all the people here!

This will be a returning problem with people who buy up orders that other people placed: you did not read or
agree to the http://store.avalon-asics.com/ "The no bullshit, no fine print terms of sale" disclaimer

Don't try and put Avalon and BFL in the same boat, BFL clearly had plenty of venture (vulture?) capital funding and plenty of personnel they hired. There is no excuse for BFL's trackrecord but frankly from their history of how they botched their FGPA (missed their shipping deadline and higher power consumption) you kind of had it coming...

I don't think you are likely to find on a short notice a suitable replacement with experience to completement NGzang

They are currently dealing with improvements and redesign issues, this is not a matter of adding more shipping minions.

Sadly, customer care/service is born out of competition. That's when companies fight for a customer.
Our situation is the opposite, we are begging to be able to buy the product.

I was referring to the last bit of the quote, which according to google translate is:

"In time, you will not be a person, if the pumpkin always ignore our interests and demands, we went to fight, break the death, die endlessly. Please pumpkin do not hurt the feelings of the payer."

While this may be some kind of taoist prayer, and is in some ways quite beautiful, I feel that I do not completely understand its import. Perhaps that's to be expected, but if not I was implying that I would like some clarification of this passage. I did not mean to imply that I wanted such clarification from Chuck Norris.

I see. I guess Chuck Norris' poetry somewhat more terse than the original. So no offense taken.

Google translate never fail to amaze me.

Are you able to contribute a better translation? I suppose it doesn't matter, but it's really bugging me now.
