Look at the prices of medical procedures in the US. One would suppose that capitalism would manage to reduce prices due to competition as it does in most other sectors. But in this particular case it is not happening at all. How do you reconcile US not having universal health care and still having the biggest per person spend? It just doesn't make any sense.

Simple. Medicine in the US is a semi-socialized, government-market-distorted clusterfuck that has nothing whatsoever to do with capitalism.

So the alternative being fully socialising it would probably work better IN COMPARISON... Unless they manage to keep corrupting the system somehow... which probably they would.

Is there any country where a pure capitalist health system exist? If there is, I would like to know and compare costs.

Same as housing, the debt and high costs are a distortion not a failure of capitalism itself.    I think its 90% of housing debt is now government backed, this actually makes more sense to me to provide health care for all.

Quote
Capitalism: If you aren't rich enough, you don't deserve to live. Dieeee (USA)
Check how much of GDP is government in every country, if its anywhere near 50% it wont be a capitalist system that is operating.    Thats the danger of Bernie or Warren, they progress or succeed even with a false narrative.   Capitalism is mostly about most efficient process and competitive markets, thats not matching very well with massive amounts of government (over)spending.

BTC looks bullish on weekly bars which seems the most appropriate view on Saturday and Sunday.   Year average below, price above a descending trend for this year and also since July.  Cant really ignore that, 9750 would be first target to beat or measure its strength on, summer highs and tax year end high april 2018

I was thinking about my private medical insurance which is supposed to cover me worldwide... but, yeah, probably there are lots of exclusions that I never even bothered to read... But I have just checked that it seems that there is a maximum cover of 50000€ which, after knowing the completely ridiculous prices of medical services in US, it's almost a joke.

dude, 50K?

we ain't even scraping you off the windshield for that...peasant

Yeah... but maybe it would be enough cover for an aspiring if I do get a headache while overseas?

I have read about completely terrifying stories (invoices/receipts included) of medical expenses running on the several hundreds of thousands dollars for what would otherwise be considered minor/mild health issues... like stents surgery, back surgery... or a few tens for a very simple bone fracture... and that without considering a long stay in the hospital which cost is simply mindblowing.

This is how the insurance companies are stealing peoples houses now. Short stays after surgery (intentionally get inflated:Especially for older people unable to make decisions) start them on roads where they never go home. The amount of drugs they pump into them is amazing and they go home hooked.

The health care system is designed to take assets in this country.

BTW there are never any shared rooms available.

https://www.medicaidplanningassistance.org/nursing-home-costs/

You have to read all the clauses of your insurance policy, insurance companies normally do not take charge or do not include coverage if a pandemic is declared.

Most insurance runs out on nursing home stays as well and they happily start a revers mortgage for you.

FTFY.

It might work better. Might not.

Another alternative would be to tear down the market distorting regulations that serve nothing but entrenched interests. That might work better, too. Plus, it would have the benefit of being a more moral system, as it would not be predicated upon coercion.

Aye. In either stated alternative.

Italy is no different than all the other countries in that they are not testing everyone they know who was in  contact with the virus.

There is only one difference: in Italy there is an high percentage of elderly people:  Italian has the second life expectancy in the world.
So we are vulnerable to elderly-affecting disease.
Regarding car crashes (taken as example of what can bring you to an ICU) is not sitting with an elderly in the hospital that bothers me: it that there is the concrete possibility that every ICU is already taken by them leaving none for me!

Let me tell you a secret about hospitals (having worked in one), they do triage. If you have a bad accident you will pass the elderly flu patients in the line when you get to the hospital, just as young patients are treated before old patients if there is a shortage of treatment available.

But in this particular case it is not happening at all. How do you reconcile US not having universal health care and still having the biggest per person spend? It just doesn't make any sense.
The trick is medical does not have to tell you what the price is, and they can charge whatever they feel like after the fact. Bonus is that if your insurance decides not to cover it, the price is different than if your insurance does cover it but pays nothing towards it.

A perfect example: I take a drug long term. Insurance refused to cover it and wanted me to take something that made me feel like I wanted to kill myself. So I paid for it out of pocket. $350 a month. Even better, it does not go towards your "deductible" because your insurance doesn't cover it.

Doctor tells insurance company to cover it, price goes down to $5.00. Next year Jan I go to pick it up and expect to pay $350. Nope, it's $80 without the deductible filled.

So how much does this drug cost? Is it $350? $80? $5? No fucking clue. Also you can run into drugs that will cost $1500 if your insurance doesn't cover it and $100 if they cover it but won't pay for it because you have to pay 100% cost till deductible met.

Move this to a hospital: They won't tell you how much everything costs up front. Becuase then you might not seek the "best care" but instead only get the care you could afford. Can't have that, now can we?

This is the root of the problem.

MONTHLY sMERITS BALANCE

Code:
SMerits Balance=Received Merits/2-Sent Merits

Positive Balance means an user has been increasing sMerits on the WO thread, while negative numbers means the users has sent more merits on WO than received.
Negative numbers are possible or because he has been generous this week because he has been greedy past weeks (so only temporary imbalance), or because he has hoarded sMerits on other threads spending them on WO thread, or because he's a merit source.

Solid increase in merit circulation this month on the WO thread.
Despite the the "short" month we made a record month for merits and merited users!
Definitely looking for more action in the coming months with halving approaching.

WO gang, the hat gang, still continue to top the chart of monthly received and sent merits.
Nice to see a continuing increase of merits sent to new merited members.

Another alternative would be to tear down the market distorting regulations that serve nothing but entrenched interests. That might work better, too. Plus, it would have the benefit of being a more moral system, as it would not be predicated upon coercion.

As you've already indicated, it'll never happen when the 'entrenched interests' are the ones in control of the corrupt system in the first place. Too much money to be made off the chronically sick and elderly in the U.S.
