Apologies if this has been covered before, but what will happen if a batch if not completed (in a reasonable amount of time)? I'm asking since batch 6 begun on June 6 and, as far as I can see, only 643 chips have been paid for as of right now.

Then steamboat will have a bunch of chips for his own mining operation he wasnt planning on!

I've been curious about the slowdown in orders as well. My assumption is most people who were willing to take a risk & leap on faith on unproven Avalon chip delivery have mostly done so, and after batch 1 shows up many more orders will start to come in rapidly. There are also may more other group buys popping up, many of dubious quality it seems.

For the refund, I imagine steamboat would simply refund the BTC if needed. This is one reason why the group buy requires that you only send from an address that you control in your own wallet, makes refunding very easy.

I've wondered about the slow down in purchases too. My initial thoughts were that folks were beginning to doubt the ROI of the later group buys, but perhaps the proliferation of other group buys is a more likely reason.

I've already kinda bought more than I intended, but I'm still a bit tempted to order from this latest batch too...  haha

thats not necessarily true as bitcoin's popularity seems to be continually increasing.

Yeah, I agree that interest will slow way down at some point. Although there IS a strong increase in interest and support of Bitcoin, it's not clear how much of that will translate into mining purchases. A lot of the new-comers to bitcoin seem more interested in trading than mining.

So while I expected a slow down in purchases, I'm surprised it's happened this early.

Yeah, I agree that interest will slow way down at some point. Although there IS a strong increase in interest and support of Bitcoin, it's not clear how much of that will translate into mining purchases. A lot of the new-comers to bitcoin seem more interested in trading than mining.

So while I expected a slow down in purchases, I'm surprised it's happened this early.

My guess (or should I say hope) is that ASIC purchases and the increase in hash rate will level off and stop growing once the ROI reaches 6-9 months to pay back, which is the same as we saw for the GPU/FPGA era in 2012. Remember in 2012 the hash rate stopped growing and even went down for a bit, even though it was still profitable to buy FPGA boards in mid-2012.

But right now we are all operating in the dark since no one knows what the hash rate will be after this next wave of ASICs hit. Maybe the ROI is fantastic, maybe it is marginal, maybe it is negative.

I think that is why purchases have slowed down, everyone has gone in for what they are willing to do in a home environment for fun, but there is too much uncertainty to go big on a large deployment. So we are all stuck wondering if we should buy more but not clicking that buy button one more time, at least that is where I am at.

Regarding the order slow down: A few weeks ago, when this group buy started, there really weren't that many options. However, just in the last few days, a few other alternatives have cropped up, and several seem relatively realistic. I guess those with money to spend are weighing their options between the likes of Steamboat, Terrahash, KnCminer, Bitfury and maybe more projects I'm not aware of. Also, reports suggest at least ONE of BFLs 60hg/s boxes have shipped (out of how many thousands ordered?), so there is movement in that camp, too. COuld be part of the explanation.

The samples arrived in Florida on Friday and were examined, repackaged and shipped. The samples arrived in Thailand on Monday.

At the risk of sounding redundant, please please please do research before making a purchase with any group buy/company/chip reseller/assembler.

It's simple enough and gives you a way to mount it somewhere. You just need to put pins in two of the holes on it and you can probably find a nice switch/button that you can use to turn it on/off. You can find more complete versions of it with the power button on it already for a few bucks more. Just google "ATX Connector Breakout Board" and you will come up with a bunch of options.
