But that's maybe just me. With 6.5 groupbuys he must have thousand, at least hundreds of clients interested in a status update at this point in time. On the other side of the coin, what people went through with BFL makes them a bit jumpy and afraid of yet another similar chain of events.  Can't really blame them; everything about Bitcoin so far has been caveat emptor.

In all fairness, he has invested tons in hardware for supplying a mining/hosting service, also surely bought maybe thousands of chips himself. So if we come to a point where chips are worthless (when difficulty continues to spike), i'm sure he will loose a ton himself since noone will want boards nor hosting by it so..

Agreed; steamboat isn't responsible for the chip delay.  Most of this skittishness is probably misdirected and should be targeted at Avalon.

Yes, I agree with this. I know we are waiting on Avalon, and are at their mercy so to speak regarding when they choose to ship. Still, it would be nice to know if there has been ANY communications of any kind. It'd be especially good to know if they aren't responding to emails (not that there is much that can be done).

Given the delay and the amount of funds at stake, I'd assume that Steamboat has made attempts at contacting Avalon. It would sure be nice to have that confirmed

will post an update."

So.. nothing. Can't be fun, arranging purchases of total 60K chips, and get that treatment.

FYI

NOTICE:

There is an error in the K16 Parts List on Github.

R47 is marked as 0603 package but the board requires an 0402 package.

This is a 100 ohm resistor.  Qty 6 should be reduced to Qty 5 and an 0402 Qty 1 added.

I've fixed the error in the parts list but if you have ordered 0603 resistors for production you will need to also order some 0402 of the same. For DIY hand assembly you may be able to fit an 0603 in as a hack. I'll update later as I see how this works out.

Sorry everyone. I thought all the errors had been caught some time ago but this one slipped in as part of the last revision.

It's fairly minor in comparison to the ASICs that never ship, but it's a nuisance, I know.

Time is of essence, and Avalon is now 5 weeks over time for Steaboats batch 1 order.

Steamboat, given we're all going to need to extract the most we can from these boards and these is no high current power supply version coming, would you consider an assembly option to only load 12 ASICs on each board instead of 16?  My current plan is to remove 4 ASICs from each board (I've only ordered 4 boards) but this seems wasteful.

This really does not say if he initiated any contact, just that he's not heard from them. With the kind of money he has on the line with them, I don't think it's inappropriate that he be explicitly asking them for ship dates.

Steamboat has been quite responsive so far, and I know he'll do his best for our group buy purchasers. But with all due respect, it's time for him to update personally. Hearing it second hand is ok, but frankly I need to hear it from Steamboat.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again -  if anyone has leverage with Avalon, it's the group buyers. The group buy organizers should be all over Avalon about this...

I never said I want him to reply daily. That would be absurd. I've already stated that I know he's busy. Yet at times one must MAKE time. I'm not blaming the messenger - I'd just like to know for myself what the messenger has to say.

Would it REALLY take that long to make a courtesy post now and then? Besides, how hard is it to post saying if and when he's asked for a status update?

To be perfectly clear here:  I don't "blame" SB for anything, or think he's doing anything wrong - he's been awesome throughout, and I'm confident he is as on top of the situation as is possible.

But we are all big boys here, and asking questions can't hurt. So I'd STILL like a bit more detail from the messenger himself. And if the group buy reps aren't hounding Avalon already, it's time to start, IMHO.

We do not believe it is wise to use less than 16 chips. Placing 12 chips on the board increases the cost per chip by 25%, or $33.42. The boards should produce 325-350/mhs fully populated. The gains from overclocking the chip would likely not outweigh the loss of overall hashrate or increased hardware and operating costs.

I am here, and we are doing everything we can to expedite the shipments. It is very frustrating to have to wait, but that is exactly what we must do. We do not control shipping, Avalon does. We can ask for information, but it is up to them to reply. Avalon is most definitely aware of the growing concern within the community about shipping dates. We cannot speak for Avalon, or speculate on the reason for their delays.

We are prepared for Batch 1, and are using this time to refine our processes and ensure everything that can be done prior to chip arrival is completed. We are over halfway through preparing parts for all of the Batches, and will be ready to process all 3,000 units should the chips arrive at once. We are currently operating with a skeleton staff on this project, though we have already trained and prepared our entire staff in order to quickly deploy all orders once the chips land.

We are working to source components in order to offer additional units, but the lead time for several parts is prohibitively long. Some of these parts have been ordered factory direct, but will not arrive until the first week of September. If anyone has additional components they will not be using, preferably in tape and reel, please email us.

We are in the same position you are. As we stated earlier, we've approached this as if we were producing our own units, because we are. Avalon delaying shipping hurts us just as it hurts you. We are not happy with the situation, and if flying to China to pick up the units in person would facilitate the arrival of our chips we'd be on the next flight. We will continue to do what we can, and will give an update the moment we know more information.

On a more positive note, we have retired our trusty cardboard Klondike in favor of something a little more pleasant to look at.
