It isn't clear what steamboat's policy is here yet (not reserving parts for chip orders only, or not reserving parts for chip orders that have also already ordered assembly), but here is a quick thought experiment that shows the latter could shaft all of SB's batch chip purchasers that have already ordered assembly:

1) chip group buy from XYZ ordered their chips before SB's batch 1 (they receive them in a couple of days).
2) chip group buy XYZ customers realize there is a part shortage, but SB is offering an assembly service based on whoever's chips arrive first.
3) chip group buy XYZ customers send their chips to SB (and pays for assembly) before SB receives his batch 1 chips.
4) SB assembles 3000 units for XYZ customers before his batch 1 chips arrive, which occurs the day after assembly of XYZ customer chips is done.
5) all of SB's chip group buy customers (batch 1 to 6) now have to wait for considerable delays (his words) while parts are sourced again.

While an extreme example, it obviously does show the problem with such a policy if it were the case. I hope SB clarifies his policy soon.
It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Sheesh... people need to read what he wrote c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y.

We are receiving orders from chip purchasers other than our own 6 batches, and will not be holding any components in reserve for those that have purchased chips from us.

Translation- if you have ordered chips and only chips, that does NOT reserve any other components for you UNTIL you order assembly.  When you order assembly, you are buying those components at that time.  His point was to light a fire under your asses to order assembly ASAP, not to say that he's going to shaft all his customers.

Give him a little credit, here!

I hope no one here is NOT giving Steamboat a ton of credit.  And I agree with your assessment.  But I'd really like to hear Steamboat say it himself.

I agree, we need to be patient and wait for clarification on the policy. One thing concerning me is that he was active on the forum just a couple of hours ago, so I would have expected a one line reply clarifying the policy after seeing the shit storm of posts here. Steamboat has been the model of thoroughness and fairness to date, so I do expect this all to be worked out satisfactorily.

Yes, and sometimes policies need to be spelled out plain so people don't panic. There is a LOT of money tied up in this venture. Not that Steamboat and team haven't done a wonderful job so far, but this is the end game and people are getting twitchy. I know I am at least.

That's what I understand. Parts for board assembly are in short supply. I've been sourcing for two days and the demand is definitely outpacing supply on many of them.

From everything going on I don't believe Steamboat is actively on the forum 24/7. There is much preparation as I can see, especially given the fact of the fan/heat-sink photo I saw earlier! +1 to that BTW Steamboat.

As stated earlier, much props to Steamboat for getting all of this together as I know how large scale projects like these can tie up a lot of resources, and time, especially when tight deadlines are needed!

I am sure all of us will be very happy when the boards are up and running as I can't wait to start bitcoin mining with an actually "rig" as opposed to the rinky dink solution I have now ;p

I guess we are Lost in Translation (interesting movie hah)... I can see where your going with how you interpreted this, there appears to be 2 different ways to read the statement, one of which requires assumptions. We just need SB to clear it up.

I see myself as a 'chip purchaser' that purchased chips from SB... so the 2nd sentence does apply to me (and everyone in this group buy) and implies that parts are not reserved.  With that in mind, combined with the knowledge that Zefir has chips, and that SB will be receiving those chips for anyone from that group that purchased assembly with LSD... it leads me to believe SB has changed his stance and has decided not to make Zefir's chip purchasers wait.

If you are accurate, the statement should have been "We are receiving orders from chip purchasers other than our own 6 batches, and will not be holding any components in reserve for those that have purchased chips from us unless assembly payment has been completed."

I do hope you are correct though, and that once assembly is paid for - your parts are reserved.  Which is how it should be, and I have every reason to believe SB will straighten it out one way or the other. Had I of read the statement the way you interpreted it, I probably wouldn't have made as many posts here, but would have just emailed to double-check.

If he really needs the assembly payments to come in, I assume it would be in SB's best interest to fix the statement so that people can make the assembly purchase.

We are in the middle of the work day, but I felt it necessary to give a quick explanation in order to assuage some of your concerns. A more in depth post will be made later tonight.

If you have purchased assembly, your parts are accounted for, and will be available once your chips come in. They have not, and will not, be sold to anyone else. This is why there is a limit on our currently available stock.

For example, If a customer purchases assembly services for chips which were purchased in Batch 5, then all the components required to fill that order will be held in reserve until that customers chips arrive, at which point they will be used to fulfill their order. They will not be used to fulfill another customers order whose chips arrived before theirs.

Those who have purchased chips directly from us have had just under one month to purchase assembly, and over two weeks to purchase prior to our service being made available to the public. We have given ample time to purchase the desired service, and worked with individuals to ensure they were able to complete their purchase.

We are not responsible for delays caused from waiting until we are sold out of available stock to place an order for assembly.

Chip deliveries and new products being announced/sold/delivered = a lot of people will be looking for a chair.  Steamboat has done a great job thus far and this is no different, it's OK to be sure you're sitting in a few weeks.
