https://www.deepdotweb.com/2016/01/23/bitcoin-playing-an-increased-role-in-crime-europol-says/

Would you believe that the existence of bitcoin has increased the number of criminality in  some countries in the world. This is the issue that was being thrown by the EuroPol and the UK Metropolitan Police. According to them bitcoin has played a huge role on the increasing criminality in their area. They added that a huge number of cybercriminals were using bitcoins in their activities.

This just shows that as bitcoin develops both advantages and disadvantages will tag along.
I guess bitcoin is not really a big factor of criminality in some places or country but no doubt about that we know we can use bitcoin in many kind of illegal transaction in the country like buying drugs and guns etc without having a trace by the government it is really in the silkroad they allready using it.
Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Criminality happens anywhere and anytime. It does not require any currency just to happen. So linking bitcoin with criminality that is happening around us is beyond. Yes, bitcoin maybe used for payment in their activities but not necessarily bitcoin is the root of the increase of criminality. Before bitcoin, there were already criminality that is happening in the world, it just upgraded for some uses bitcoin for their transactions. And social media got so much attention on it.

Exactly criminals and social deviants are just part of every system and they will adopt no matter the currency we use, the more we advance in technology they also look out for ways to perpetuate crime so we shouldn't lump it on Bitcoin that it has created more criminality.

It's true that there are some criminality that use bitcoin. It's not strange at all because bitcoin is anonymous and quite harder to track instead of real money.
But we can't blame bitcoin for that, since even if it's not bitcoin, they still can use another thing for their criminality.
So even there's not bitcoin, the crime will still go on. It's just unlucky that they mostly use bitcoin and then the fame of bitcoin is kinda bad because people relate bitcoin to criminality now, though it's not 100% true.

Yes its true that people should not blame Bitcoin for the crimes happening nowadays because it is not the source of it but their own personal desires. It can be their love for money, revenge, greed and many more. Crime has been on the society even when before came into existence.

The illicit use Bitcoin is a problem that arises at the information and user layers. Drug dealers, terrorists and other criminals leverage Bitcoin technologies and various intermediaries to move, they are more like abusing the use of bitcoin.
Money while making it difficult for law enforcement to track those movements

i doubt it.
criminal activities were happening even before bitcoin. for example the ransomware that everyone is talking about these days have been around a very long time before bitcoin was created!

and besides since bitcoin doesn't offer real anonymity it can not really help the criminals as much as things like hard cash helps them.
Criminality is not connected to bitcoin. It exist even bitcoin is not found. And criminals cannot used bitcoin to their plan because only few people accept bitcoin as a payment.

All things have a good side and a bad side always exist in parallel with each other, bitcoin too.Once bitcoin value is increasing and economic potential is growing, then the criminal network is also increasingly sophisticated and complex. It's like a natural law  Smiley
indeed not leave if any things that are developing and developed world surely there'll be no bad acts like a bitcoin is now being increased in value that will affect the economic growth of the pontesi so that the criminal networks are also increasingly sophisticated and complete some way

Basing on how the Bitcoin works, it definitely can be advantageous to people who are doing criminal deeds. You can literally go and buy bitcoin to buy drugs or something illegal, and that opens the way with that. That's a bad thing, and that's what faces bitcoin now, and that makes people think that bitcoin is a bad thing.

A lot have associated bitcoin as an effective tool to be used by the people who have bad motives or intention to commit some crime and get away with it easily which is in fact leaving behind the main idea in the context. When we say criminals, any way and anything present in front of them can be used to execute a crime and as the world enter the age of technology then they would surely use it that’s why it is the duty of the government to create a countermeasure with it and banning bitcoin is not the best choice.

There are a lot of of efforts to combine the two terms with eachother. Criminality and bitcoin.

Like with many other things that banks does not have any money.

But outside of deliberate smear campaign, the criminals can use bitcoin for malicious purposes, but not as nearly as much as they use cash.

There can be reluctance to use bitcoin by criminals, because they might think they do not know something about it. They do not say so about the cash.

Criminality has always been our way of life even before the time of civilization up till now. As at now even if crimes are being committed with cash and even any currency should come out tomorrow, it will still be exploited for crimes purposes by those who are criminal inclined. It is now the duty of government to play their role in other to forestall such moves so blaming crimes on bitcoin is actually a failure on their own part without any form of dilution.

There are a lot of criminals out there and scamming online in social Medias before we can have bitcoin. There are a lot of criminals out there in this world that they will not choose who will go to be their victims. Even if the person is not rich they will still scam people. So I don't think that you give criminals an option to think that they can use bitcoin. Or should I say how did you say that? Do you know someone that is criminal because of bitcoin?

I think what OP's trying to say is those people who are using bitcoin in an illegal way, like buying illegal drugs, and firearms online---in the deep web. But the scammers can't be called as a criminal, the right term for them is "useless" people, "lazy" people, because that is the only way they know on how to earn money by scamming people, especially the newbie in the crypto world.
Well I don’t agree with the point that the scammers can’t be termed as a criminal. It seems to me like you have a soft corner for the scammers otherwise why someone will pass such remarks. Let me define the word crime for you. Any kind of exploitation to others emotionally, physically or in monitory terms is a crime.

Now according to this definition if a person is lazy or active but if he has harmed and exploited someone he shall be considered as a criminal and should be charged for the crime. If scammers are not criminals then I would say the real life robbers should also not be termed as criminals.

I agree.
They have made their choices and of course they knew what they are doing specially the criminals who are using the internet.
If they are not aware of it then how they did end up having knowledge with the internet.
This scams are planned. They have to do list and step by step programs on how it will be done with almost perfection.

The scammers are criminals there is no way around that, they are deceiving people with false promises and then keeping the money and not giving the product or service they offered at the beginning, that is a way of stealing, nothing more and nothing else.

Would you believe that most criminals breathe oxygen? This just goes to show that law abidng people use bitcoins, but criminals do also.Oxygen is a double edged sword, I guess. Maybe everyone's air intake should be regulated and monitored.

These comparisons always turn out to be apples to oranges. Crime is changing and bitcoin is part of that, but so is facebook, so is twitter, so is online banking. That is no reason to blame bitcoin and think the future must be stopped.
In the late 1930 the first powerful cars hit the roads in America and spawned a huge crime wave. Local police had no response to this technological advance. One could rob a bank, then race to the state or even county line and be untouchable. Some people called for a ban on cars. But of course eventually sane minds won out.

Not all of the news out there are inclined with Bitcoin.
How can bitcoin be a cause of a crime, I mean yea it's possible but not that real. We all know that bitcoin can be use in any other stuffs out there, but I don't think that many people out there know what bitcoin is. I mean, if you are just sa moron criminal, it's almost impossible to you to earn bitcoin, ofcourse you will choose to make crime rather than earning bitcoin and we all know that bitcoin is hard to earn.
I guess we are listening to such type of comments because of the anonymity of the Bitcoin. People may consider the Bitcoin as a medium for covering the illegal activities because they may think that before the bitcoin there was no crime and criminals. I really don’t understand this concept of the people. We can see that most of the drug cartel agencies deal in the Dollars for the exchange of the services and goods they provide you illegal.

Bitcoin anonymity does not relate to criminality nor this feature was develop to promote crime. I think it is time to realize that if bitcoin issued in wrong sense, then it the the user to be blame for and not bitcoin.

There needs to be strict supervision to protect the bitcoin from crime, so the existence of a crime that uses bitcoin can result in the weakening of bitcoin.

Why they are only looking at the possibility of bitcoin being used for criminality or any related violence funding? Criminality acts are even existing bitcoin is not yet created. And they are only taking advantage bitcoin for it's anonymity so they found a way for supporting their criminality.
