I've added some more statistics on each of those 82 users, see Percentage of Merit received on old posts, deleted posts, and average per post.

This post is very interesting, LoyceV, merited.
I don't know which criteria Darkstar_ will use to select applicants, and I am not sure we are entitled to know that, but I think it is not only merit related.
I think "quality" of posts is also important, something that is somewhat related to merits, but is not necessarily true. I guess getting 10 merits for posting train memes on WO or getting 50 for "nice project", albeit legal, is not what he's looking for a good campaign participant.

So, an interesting "statistic" to see, would be the first three top merited posts per users. I think ddmrddmr tool has a tab to do that manually for each user (I don't think, I am sure of it because I was the one who asked that feature to him), but with 82 and counting applicants can be a cumbersome task, even for a very motivated campaign manager.

Maybe some of you, data handling demigod, can do that.

The campaign is very competitive, I know before applying, but I can not deny my feelings with the result.

I don't think there are too much difference with your two options. The competitive level is the same. Over time, I guess there are less chances to see open slots because when time goes, higher and higher quality participants in the campaign, that in turn decrease the odds of removed ones.

You should just PM people you want in the campaign. Not that its a hassle to apply, but you'd probably save yourself a lot of time that way.

I've considered it, but I've decided not to for numerous reasons. The biggest one is that I don't know everyone, especially in Local sections/sections I don't frequent, and I don't want to primarily PM people who I actively talk with/see around.

The former option prevents spam of the Services thread, because the latter would have more overlap (i.e. users repeatedly apply in each slot opening vs. in one mass opening). However, by opening up frequently, you are able to judge people's post quality as they develop and the circumstances between members can change.

It's a balance between favoring recruitment variety vs. favoring sanctity of the thread. I think the choice is obvious.

I prefer this one (assumed that I'll still interested, still eligible, and this campaign is still running). It's not good to have this kind of contest too often. IMO Mr. Olympia contest should be special.
