i just hope not my password in plaintext.
my bet is it doesn't send the password.
Well, IF it is transmitted to the server (which definitely is the case for forging), then it is transmitted in clear text. It may be tunnelled through an SSL socket, but it will definitely arrive as clear text at the server side.

It has no real purpose, it just allows you to give your account a nice looking name, and a description. This may help for public interest accounts, but may as well not help at all. Just a nice gimmick, nothing more.

Maybe one use case for the alias thing. If you for example have a charity account and want to prove, that this account really belongs to you (stepping out of the anonymity), then you could set an account name and put some VERISIGN trusted signature into the description.

You should really only use a local node installed on your computer. Because if it transmits the passphrase, then in cleartext. But if you do not start forging you should have no reason to worry about. Forging only starts automatically when you log into your account locally. If you use a remote wallet, you will see a "Gray icon" on the forging button. Only if you click it, enter your passphrase and confirm that you want to start forging, then you will be forging. However, forging is a good thing. If done locally on your own computer with a local wallet installed, it should be totally safe.

One safe way to forge on a remote node would be to "lease" your XEL from a main account to a throwaway account. This account can then forge on a remote node ... it's not dangerous if the private key gets stolen, because your original account (which owns the lent XEL) is not compromised then.

I'm waiting for a Windows or Mac client, since the only dealings I've ever had with Linux is in the Peanuts cartoon strip. ;-)

i am also waiting for a Windows client or Mac client.. Both are already there, I am using the Mac version already. Just install Oracle JDK 8 (no openjdk) and use ./compile.sh as well as ./run-desktop.sh scripts ;-) Alternatively, ./run.sh and a browser pointing to http://localhost:17876.There is also a packager, which is not yet tested but will create a Elastic.app for your Launchpad. I guess Unvoid will do some guides soon.
