I think the mining rate it's based on benchmark just because the the phone it doesn't do anything, and if you have a good phone you will "mine" with greater speed, and if you have a not so good phone you will mine for less coins. It's like mining for BTC with greater power and speed you get more.
I wouldn't want my phone to really mine for any coin, I need it to be a cordless phone not "always plugged" phone, so I think that benchmark is the best way.
