Phil, out of curiosity, why did you go for the 1800x as opposed to the 1700? They're both 8-core/16-thread, the 1700 has lower TDP and they're supposed to clock almost equally high...

This thread is (annoyingly) giving me the urge to do another build... Thinking R7 1700 and 7 or 8 RX 560's to mine Monero. I'd call it the great bang for the buck build! Cheesy

congrats Phil ... thread #6 -- wow time past by fast!

I for one, am looking forward to the 1800 build -- I think many miss the point of the thread - its about learning, sharing and exploring new stuff -- making money is a given but knowledge and being nice to people, is more important IMHO.

To the gent in thread #5 about mining at home....

I started at home, but after 5 rigs.... wife not happy about the noise, heat and power bill, so I conveniently found a mancave/warehouse near the house. Me and my buddies (all recently retired) -- we pooled our funds and embarked on a modest mining empire. 2 years later, we have over close to 100 x GPU rigs -- big and small, plus Scrypt, X11 and SHA256 Asics hosted in Canada - thanks to cheap hydro power.

There was a question on profitability --- all I can say is all the wives are happy we didn't lose our retirement money and I think the last 2 years was the best that could have happened to the home miner, because it was profitable too!

While GPU mining is better for multi algo mining,  algo specific Asics miners are also needed in portfolio to ensure that a balanced mining strategy.

.... that is why Asic miner sales esp from Bitmain are often out of stock.

Thanks for the responses Phil and citronick! I had considered adding more 120 breakers but don't know why I hadn't considered 240. Definitely reading this thread every day and soaking up information. Haven't been mining more than a few months but i've done a lot of research to start. For someone with a very small budget, is there any ASIC at all that would be profitable to operate? My GPU's are 3-4 month ROI's right now and I feel like that's a good spot to be in. I did consider an older antminer like an s4 or s5 to mine BCH with since that seems to be more profitable than BTC. What ROI do you guys typically shoot for?

price I got the 1800x on a deal

 380 usd my cost

at newegg 430 + 29 tax = 459
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113430&ignorebbr=1&cm_re=ryzen_1800x-_-19-113-430-_-Product

1700x 309 + 22 tax = 331

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113429&cm_re=amd_1700-_-19-113-429-_-Product

so  380 vs 331  I went  1800x instead of 1700x

Quote from: citronick
I just got one of my China contacts last night to buy it for me.

Taobao is a Alibaba for domestic market kind of a thing, so plenty of Chinese text there unlike Aliexpress which is designed for International market.

Hope to get it in the next week or so via air - will revert soon.

Bought 3 Qty - 2 for me and 1 donating to Phil :-)
These look epic. Very interesting. Be sure to let us know how you get on with them!

The mining tent idea is good, but keep in mind those grow op inline fans are really noisy and have a lot of vibration.  I had one before but returned it, airflow is good but its wayyy too noisy.  Even with a box over the fan.
You can use turbos they have  lower dcb noise or you can make muffler and use allu pipe on it so all the noise stay in.I had a tent in my room and all you could hear was air going thru allu pipes, there are also coated pipes that silince even that

Also sold some coin at 4825!

Wow thread got busy.  Apology accepted. Dragonmike.  I was thinking of switching out the thread and the posts you did pushed me to do it.

I do a lot of different builds  to expand the options for mining.

The gigabyte d3 z270 can do five cards if you go riser.

Give me a minute I will post how to connect four or five to it.

five cards  3 riser 2 full = works  as tested by me  4x 1080ti's 1x 1070

6 slots why only five cards though?

1080 version of their long-running 1070 ITX - which itself has been bloody near impossible to get ahold of lately (and BLOODY expensive when you can), along with the MSI competing product.

I have to wonder how or if they upgraded the cooling over the 1070 version, but that one runs cool enough if you give it decent airflow access that I could see the possibility of it handling 29 more watts OK.

yeah good luck finding it.

I had 6 of the 1070's  they were good but i sold them all  when they were going for 600 a piece  I sold mine for 450-475 each.  Still made some money  with a lessor markup.

No but when we finish expansion we may.

We are at

9-13 k-watts

27-39 k-watts first expansion  November

Two more expansions after that.

Phil,
So I just wanted to pick your brain on what you would do in this situation.  I started mining earlier this year and have 5 rigs up and running (10x 1080ti  7x 1070 3x 1060 & 2x 1050ti)  My girlfriend and I are about to break ground on a new home on 14 acres, we live in Ohio so heat 6 months and AC 6 months.  I had planned on making a mining cave in the basement with dedicated ventilation.  I would like to expand to more GPU’s and possibly get into a couple of ASIC’s if possible in the near future.

After thinking about a mining room in the basement I am afraid that expansion could be an issue… My other thought was to set a 10x12 shed (zoning restrictions UGH!) near the house and have electric run to the shed.  Doing that, I would be able to vent it without relying on AC and would not have to worry about the noise in the basement or heat issues.  Obviously the shed would increase the cost over just making a room in the basement though…

As for electric, I had planned on starting off with 2x 30 amp 240 volt circuits and run PDU’s from there.  That would be more than enough to run what I have up and running right now and give me room for expansion.

What can you see as Pro’s and Con’s to either and which would you opt for in this situation?

FYI 60 is the new 40…
Thanks!
Bones

Suggestions:

1) Go the 3 or 4 or 5 car garage route plus add a laundry room. Keep the original laundry room in the house. Integrate outside air vents.

2) Future proof by adding several heavy duty outlets for charging an electric vehicle. Presumably one for each garage stall. Plus the 30A 240V dryer outlet #2 could be converted to other uses.

Naturally this extra space could be repurposed for other uses.

IIRC, IRS max deduction for a home office was $1500 in CY2016.
