Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

If you missed this, from Barntech:

**** Update 10-12-13****

Hey guys. OK i'm back, had a great weekend away and came back to good news! The team have implemented the fix into 30 boards and they have been running successfully for two days. Cheesy Looks like we're in business. I am shipping out those 30 boards now and the rest will be ready and tested tomorrow. We have passed the info on to our repairers in the states and the U.K. so we are ready to go into full repair mode.

Can everyone who is keen on doing the fix themselves please write to me so i can make note of who you are and pass on the relevant information.

Thanks everyone for your patience in this. We are truly almost out of it now. Can't wait to get this done so we can move onto future plans!!

I've noticed tensions have been running high and i understand it completely. It certainly has been a frustrating situation. But please don't take it out on the people helping make all this happen. This has been an amazing community effort and has been so wonderful to see everyone band together and solve this situation as a group. Massive thanks to TK1337 and Milkbottlec for stepping up to help out with repairs and going way above and beyond. Massive thanks to Lajz for keeping the forum running smoothly. And to everyone for chucking in your thoughts to help get to the bottom of it all.

As for what actually went wrong here, unfortunately we don't really know. Could have been bad or fake parts, could have been bad workmanship putting the parts on. As for the design, we are almost 100% sure that the chosen parts were right and the design sound, but i guess its possible that they just weren't up for the job. On paper there was plenty of overhead in there. Its kind of impossible to say really. But hey, we've found a way around and the boards now work. Thats the main thing.

Now i imagine things are going to get a bit messy with packages all over the place so please make it easier for me and let me know the status of your stuff. First thing i need to know is everyone doing their own repairs.

Oh and there is a new firmware that is running very smoothly indeed. More on that soon.  Smiley

Thanks guys.

Barn,
Thanks for the modded board. Smiley
To provide an idea what it looks like

It has been hashing for a while, tried different settings.  This is after almost an hour on int:50:2:950  (but results are similar to stock)

checking temperatures

ambient 27.2 C
large heatsink 32.1 C
Power MosFets 30.7 C
new Lin Reg 31.9 C (Edit:  this is on the clip on heatsink, the regulator body is at 39.2 C now)
top right hand BF ASIC (near board's corner) 29.8C

(I posted a similar input at http://drillbitsystem.com/forum/index.php?topic=206.105)

Happy Hashing!!! Grin

ps:  just completed the night hashing, no problems.

Looks like this rollercoaster ride isn't over:

http://drillbitsystem.com/forum/index.php?topic=206.120
Oh bummer. Sad

One of my boards is dead -- no green light. I suspect it was my fault as it happened after I moved the boards a bit [EDIT: with the rig powered off].

After getting my boards today, I eventually got the four of them setup and purring along at a combined 72.5GH/s for an hour and a half, with "int:40:1:850" settings, and 3.5% HW errors. Temps stabilised at 37/36/35/30c.

Turned off the rig to try out a different cooling fan. Got that setup no problem. Went to turn the rig back on and one of the boards didn't have its green light on, and was making a piercing/high pitched and loud electrical noise. I had the boards setup to automatically start mining on startup. The little Atmel chip on the board without a green light gave off a bright spark and then started smoking. I turned the PC off immediately with the PSU switch (after about 1~2 seconds of smoke). Took it out, and got it on my desk now. The heatsink on the line regulator is still attached, no problems there. The little Atmel chip has a tiny scar on it.

My other three boards are running fine at least. I'll leave them running and monitor them for the next few hours.

I haven't plugged the dead board in since then, and I'm not sure what to do with it now. Undecided

My board turned up today, it's mining away.

About 18.5GH/s with cgminer 3.8.4 and the new firmware at 37.4C

It was a little faster on cgminer 3.8.1 and the old firmware, but that didn't report the temp so I don't know it it was driving the board harder.

Did you receive an email or anything with tracking?

I didn't get a tracking number. Just turned up on my front step at 9am. No complaints about the speed of shipping of course, but notification that the board was on its way would've been preferable (theft, rain etc.)

Yeah I'm a bit disappointed losing one board, but I've still got three good boards churning out ~56GH/s, and I've added another fan on it which has lowered temps by a few degrees celsius. As long as none of them go kaput as well (touch wood!), I'll still break even dollar-wise within two months. Smiley Just need to get the dead board repaired.

Nah, it just turned up express post which is overnight, no time for tracking numbers.

OT sort of, but just saw this on Amazon. USB hub and has a couple good reviews for miners. One said 5 to 7 miners on it. On sale for $25!

I have been running the USB 3.0 version and they are great. These seem a little limited because you will max out at 36 watts which would be running the power supply near capacity with all 10 slots filled which will most likely shorten its life.

The spec for that lists the power supply as being 3amp. USB Spec is to deliver up to 0.5a per port, so this unit is unable to provide maximum power to all 10 ports, I'd personally avoid this particular model for serious mining.
