I smoked 8 years, many times tried to quit but I did not succeed, I read a lot of literature on how to set yourself up and now I do not smoke for 2 years and I do not want it)

For me I just had a mindset that everytime I feel that I really wanted to smoke, I just pullout some candies from my pocket and take one.

Quitting smoking is very difficult, my father has smoked for over 10 years, now he can not stop anymore. Smoking will greatly reduce your life expectancy. hope you will quit.

Slowly stepping down number of cigarettes per day worked for me - setting goals over a long period, starting with halving the number, then halving that, then down to just one after meals, and finally one per day and then none. But it certainly is one of the hardest things to do and in any case it took nearly two years before the cravings went away.

Cold turkey is the best way to stop your ciggarette smoking habit. but first you must have a tough mentality. I have tried it before 5 years ago. You conditioned your mind telling your self to really stop smoking. And commitment to yourself though using this method may give you a withdrawal, just focus on something to avoid on smoking.

Quitting smoking is not as easy as turning the palm of a hand takes a long process. Because stopping the habit is quite difficult. Gradually it can definitely be important intentions.

Replace your father's smoking habit with something healthier like sports and eating dietary supplements. I'm sure the habit will disappear a little because the addictive substance of tobacco will disappear from your father's body.

i could not achieve it, but now i only smoke with rare ocasions

all it takes is being occupied with other stuff, do other things, dont let your mind think about smoking, and then you can reduce the addiction somewhat, it worked for me, try it too.

I am. 3 times or 4 until not, and I think and hope this time is permanent. I have 2 years without smoking. You need to have ambition to quit and after that start doing all the things you would have done when you smoked, like drinking coffee, playing something going with friends,etc.

But if your condition is fine and not in a state of stress you better not consume it at all. So you smoke in certain circumstances and just as well, this can really help you to quit smoking easily.

You can try vaping as an alternative or chewing on some nicotine gum to prevent smoking.

If you want to succeed to quit smoking you can start the first day by keeping yourself busy with your activities. Do not get caught up in solitude so arise your desire to smoke again.
Look for more intense activities and make you forget to smoke like cycling, exercising, swimming etc. With a lot of activity and too dense time will make you more forget the desire to smoke because there is no time to do that.

Some of my friends are vaping to satisfy their smoking habits.  Vaping seems to work. 

Avoid some habits that can make you smoke like drinking coffee, alcohol, staying up and also bedebat.
But if you can not afford to avoid it all you can start to consume fruits and also milk because it will give an unpleasant impression if cemented with a cigarette.
Also do not combine smoking with casual activities like watching tv, reading magazines to sufing internet, it will worsen your habits and also not good for your health.
