It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

I've always considered Gridcoin to be one of the more interesting coins out there in the crypto world along with similar coins such as Curecoin and Foldingcoin although I admit I haven't been following it very closely recently. Recently the market cap seems to have shot up from $100,000 to $800,000 in the space of a month which is surprising. Anyway, just out of curiosity but why has the name changed on Coinmarketcap? It's now called Gridcoin Classic? Was there a fork? Huh

EDIT: OK, so I read the wiki and it seems that the coin will be evolving to something more advanced called Gridcoin Research. The whole thing looks very complex though compared to the old model where you simply get rewards based on the no. of BOINC shares, although I understand the new design is superior, so it looks like I've got some reading to do.

the reason of the market cap rise is the addition of gridcoin research to the exchanges, so it's fully launched now ;-)

I am always intrigued by this coin and always too bored to research it more or maybe your marketing isnt that good.

Anyway, i have a few questions but please dont just tell me to read the wiki. At least tell me which page of the wiki to read.

1) First and most important question. I am only a CPU miner. Is there any research project that require only CPU power instead of GPU or at least GPUs dont have big advantage?
2) Is there any pool that i can do this without downloading BOINC or BOINC is a must?
3) I see two coins now. Classic and Research. I had some (very few) gridcoins. Are those obsolete now? Do i get Research coins with them? Should i have been staking them all that time? How do the economics of two coins work? I see the term obsolete, which means what?
4) Can you please show me the most critical posts others have write for gridcoin and how you do reply to those?

Thanks.

P.S. I dont want to buy the coin. I want to earn it by helping in research. Thats why i am hoping between primecoin, riecoin and gapcoin since i like coins that want to be useful.

From what I've read, I believe that Research will ultimately be replacing Classic although the process won't be fully complete until April 2015.

The two resources I found most helpful were:

http://coinwiki.info/en/Gridcoin
http://coinwiki.info/en/Proof-of-Research#Gridcoin-Classic_to_Gridcoin-Research_Conversion

1) http://gridcoin.us/Guides/whitelist.htm
2) Boinc is a must!
3) No, they are not obsolete. https://pool.gridcoin.us/CoinExchange.aspx Gridcoin classic must be sent to burn address from your own wallet, NOT exchange!!!

try updating the project using the boinc client and the running "execute resetcpids"; if that doesn't work, try removing and readding the project.

Thank you both for your answers!

2) Boinc is a must!

But that means that i should install boinc on every server right? I cant install it only on 1 server and somehow point the other severs to that 1 server. Because this is unfortunately not practical for me.

Cool! Many projects Smiley And out of the blue i learned about radioactiveathome.org! That is awesome since i wanted to build a geiger counter and now that i find this it only makes me to finally make it. I will research it more in April and hopefully i will indeed build one and use it Smiley

Really, please give me something on this. Not the trolling or the idiotic stuff. Not what other fanboys write because they own another coin. But something serious and what is your response on that.

need a little help setting up my Gridcoin Research mining.

I would like to use my running Boinc to get Gridcoin (not mine Gridcoin by GPU directly).

BOINC is up and running Leiden Classical, all working fine 3 days now
Now I installed the Gridcoin Research Wallet, entered my Boinc email address on first startup and edited the gridcoinresearch.conf file to make it find my Boinc installation.
Huh?
