Sounds good. Gotta be somehow trustable though, we don't want executables made by our fiendly local Anon reps...

I don't know how to be sure that someone isn't slipping in code, but I added a requirement for a brief explanation of compiling the executable, so that people can compile their own to be on the safe side and make it easier for someone trustworthy to compile and release their own version:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34586.msg1100833#msg1100833

"There's a four generation share bounty for the first person who provides a devcoin windows executable, and a two share bounty for the second. It must be built from the August 22, 2012 devcoin files or later, from the developer files at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/galacticmilieu/files/DeVCoin/

There also has to be a brief explanation of how the executable was compiled, so that others can create their own executable."

I would say you pose the wrong question. Correctly it should be in my oppinion: What am i willing to do, to empower myself to build a house with a concrete printer. The Devcoin Bounty Security is not about creating products, but about developing technology to be able to produce certain products. So you would have to ask someone two levels after the development process about pricing.

I imagine this sounds funny but it isnt a joke at all:

Who is joking, if its feasible I would love to build a house, my family has some land in a neighboring town that we have always been too broke to develop. If all I needed was to have a simple machine strategically pour concrete I think I would be able to afford it.

So how much has to be invested before you will build me a house with the concrete printer. Or boobie prize, send me a new 3d printer ( I just want the self duplicated one) Smiley

A really rough estimate to to develop a new class of printer with another deposition method or size would be on the order of 100,000 USD. This is only the money for a prototype good enough to start a business, the business would then have to sell a lot of printers, putting some profit back into research, to finally make a reliable, fast printer of that class. To make a house you would need a printer for cement, metal, ceramic, and you'd need big printers, cutters and microprinters, overall, you'd need at least 10 new classes of machine tools, for a total of 1,000,000$.

Printers are one of many things that devcoin would fund, assuming that printer development would be 10% of the total development funding, the total development funding would be 1,000,000$ / 10% = 10,000,000$. Devcoin is now a beneficial corporation, so development of stuff which does not make money for devcoin can only be on the order of 10% in the long term, so the total market capitalization required would be 10,000,000$ / 10% = 100,000,000$.

Devcoin currently has a market capitalization of about 40,000$, so the capitalization would have to increase by a factor of about 100,000,000$ / 40,000$ = 2,500. The market capitalization will naturally increase because of coin generation, in 70 months (about six years) there will be roughly five times as many coins, so the value would have to increase by 2,500 / 5 = 500 times. Assuming an equal increase in value of devcoin versus bitcoin, and bitcoin versus the USD, that would be about a 22 fold increase, so devcoin would be at about 0.000031 BTC, and bitcoins would be at about 220$, working out to a devcoin worth of about 0.007$ (0.7 cents). Note, I'm not predicting that kind of growth for devcoin or bitcoin, it is just a calculation of what would be required to fully fund printer development. Also, funding printer development is a long term goal, possible only if devcoin value rises a lot.

A single 100,000,000$ investment is not expected. However, what can be done is to grow the devcoin ecosystem in every way possible. Every new use, exchange, pool, business, article, etc.. increases the value of devcoin, which can then fund more projects, which then increases the value of devcoin and so on.

If anyone wants to fund devcoin, investments are appreciated, but devcoin is very volatile, and you should only invest in it what you can afford to lose. If it goes up, you win, and open source developers get a lot, if it goes down, you lose, but at least the developers got something.

Another way to help devcoin is to add devcoin as a payment option for your business. Devcoin market capitalization is much smaller than bitcoin capitalization, so you would only get a few devcoin purchases, but there is still a remaining bounty for devcoin businesses, so hopefully it would still be worth your time. Otherwise you could help out and earn devcoins by writing articles:
http://devtome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Earn_Devcoins_by_Writing

If anyone would like to write a wiki article, but is not sure of the formatting or whatever; send me a rough draft and I would then copy edit and format it for devtome.

If anyone wants to help by developing, the only thing needed for the devcoin application at this time is a windows executable:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34586.msg1141147#msg1141147

Otherwise, developers can help and get a devcoin generation share by working on the Open Transactions project:
http://devtome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Open_Transactions

The Devcoin Bounty Project is funding the Qcool prototype phase:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=101559.msg1155285#msg1155285

http://www.glari.ch:3000/projects/qcool

The watercooling element is the next step to high end FPGA usage.

Even this small amounts of electricity heats up the board and it needs to be cooled. Watercooling for FPGA is the next step towards stabilizing the performance and lifetime of the hardware. Thats why DVB funds the watercooling adapter development for FPGA Boards. This elements will be tested as a part of the Glari Mining Project GMP  and goes comercial after by a third party.

..

Improved cooling would help miners, which in turn helps the network. I suggest a bounty of 4 generation shares for the first successful open source cooler, and 2 for the second.

Are there any objections?

Edit: Later I implied that the mining cooler bounty was actually 4, then 3, then 2, then 1:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34586.msg1302913#msg1302913

So the bounty series is now 4, then 3, then 2, then 1. Two awards have been made so the current award is 2 shares.

How do I get devcoins for writing music?

This could be interesting, as in my experience grpahical art and music both have historically had real problems with being "open source".

In software where we say open source we mean that all of the raw stuff that gets collated/compiled together to form the final piece (executable) is the source code.

But in my experience artists go to some pretty extreme lengths to hold back what seems logically to be the "source code" for their products.

For example just as a programmer can combine if, then, else, plus. minus, and other pieces/components to make a program, an artist can combine violin sounds, piano sounds, oboe sounds, or even run code that produces such sounds, and compile all of these components into an executable music file.

Similarly a graphic artists often takes a whole bunch of layers and layers them, or even takes a bunch of three dimensional models and generates a two dimensional image from a particular angle.

But somehow we are often expected to believe that only the final image, not all the models / layers compiled together to create it, or only the final music files, not all the samples or synthesis algorithms composed/collated/compiled together to make it, are the "source code" for their final piece?

So I guess my first question would be what exactly are you proposing to claim to be the "source code" of your music that makes it "open source" music?

Will we get source code for the instruments, and a score that those instruments will play? Or what?

Ahhh I think I understand devcoin a bit better now. I won't get devcoin for writing a song but if I made like a website where musicians could collabarate on open source music (like github with an in browser DAW?)  that would be the 'foundation' of a devcoin project right?
