NY Times Op-Ed: Climate Change Will Usher In A Second Holocaust…

A new Holocaust is lurking just around the corner, and it will be caused by climate change, Yale historian Timothy Snyder said in a New York Times op-ed over the weekend.

As disruptions in the earth's climate make food and other essential resources scarcer, men will slaughter one another under the banner of "them or us," he added, suggesting that this is not unlike when Nazi Germany tried in the 20th century to wipe out the Jews.

Unsurprisingly, Snyder's op-ed has been met in certain corners with criticism and outright mockery.

"Liberal professors and organizations like Snyder and The New York Times are much more concerned about inciting guilt and panic to further their own agenda than they are about addressing real tragedies currently taking place around the world," Newsbuster's Spencer Raley wrote in response to the op-ed.

National Review's Robert Zubrin summed up Snyder's article by saying, "So we are looking at the grim prospect of world war and genocide over resources. And it's all America's fault."

The Washington Examiner's David Freddoso added, "This is simply insane. Like, lock up the author, he's insane."

But for Snyder, it's a near certain thing that climate change, which he also refers to as "global warming," will bring about mass genocide not unlike the Nazi slaughter of the Jews.

"[T]he Nazi Final Solution ... was in fact the killing of human beings at close range during a war for resources," Snyder wrote. "The war that brought Jews under German control was fought because Hitler believed that Germany needed more land and food to survive and maintain its standard of living — and that Jews, and their ideas, posed a threat to his violent expansionist program."

"The Holocaust may seem a distant horror whose lessons have already been learned," he added. "But sadly, the anxieties of our own era could once again give rise to scapegoats and imagined enemies, while contemporary environmental stresses could encourage new variations on Hitler's ideas, especially in countries anxious about feeding their growing populations or maintaining a rising standard of living."

German domination was based on the "denial of science," he explained, suggesting also the existence of eerie similarities between the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich and efforts today to challenge the science of climate change.

"Climate change threatens to provoke a new ecological panic. So far, poor people in Africa and the Middle East have borne the brunt of the suffering," he wrote.

The op-ed goes on to suggest that economic crises in countries affected by "global warming," including China and Russia, could spill over into violent conquests for resources, ultimately coming to the shores of the United States.

"The full consequences of climate change may reach America only decades after warming wreaks havoc in other regions. And by then it will be too late for climate science and energy technology to make any difference," Snyder claimed. "Indeed, by the time the door is open to the demagogy of ecological panic in the United States, Americans will have spent years spreading climate disaster around the world."

He concludes by asking whether Americans will at long last accept the science of "global warming" and act to mitigate its damage, or whether they will go the way of the Nazis and react violently as "a wave of ecological panic" spreads across the world.

Antarctic sea ice hit 35-year record high Saturday (washingtonpost.com)

Antarctic sea ice has grown to a record large extent for a second straight year, baffling scientists seeking to understand why this ice is expanding rather than shrinking in a warming world.

On Saturday, the ice extent reached 19.51 million square kilometers, according to data posted on the National Snow and Ice Data Center Web site. That number bested record high levels set earlier this month and in 2012 (of 19.48 million square kilometers). Records date back to October 1978.

Debate no more! Jailed for scientific dissent?! Twenty climate scientists, including Top UN scientist, call for RICO investigation of climate skeptics in letter to Obama

Warmist scientists including UN IPCC Lead Author Kevin Trenberth to Obama: ‘We appreciate that you are making aggressive and imaginative use of the limited tools available to you in the face of a recalcitrant Congress. One additional tool – recently proposed by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse – is a RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) investigation of corporations and other organizations that have knowingly deceived the American people about the risks of climate change, as a means to forestall America’s response to climate change. We strongly endorse Senator Whitehouse’s call for a RICO investigation.’

Via Politico: ‘Twenty climate scientists called for RICO investigation in a letter to Obama and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch. The scientists argue that the systemic efforts to prevent the public from understanding climate change resembles the investigation undertaken against tobacco. They draw inspiration from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse who said on the Senate floor that there might be a similar conspiracy here, and a civil trial could provide the tools of discovery needed to find out.’

Letter to President Obama, Attorney General Lynch, and OSTP Director Holdren

September 1, 2015

Dear President Obama, Attorney General Lynch, and OSTP Director Holdren,

As you know, an overwhelming majority of climate scientists are convinced about the potentially serious adverse effects of human-induced climate change on human health, agriculture, and biodiversity. We applaud your efforts to regulate emissions and the other steps you are taking. Nonetheless, as climate scientists we are exceedingly concerned that America’s response to climate change – indeed, the world’s response to climate change – is insufficient. The risks posed by climate change, including increasing extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and increasing ocean acidity – and potential strategies for addressing them – are detailed in the Third National Climate Assessment (2014), Climate Change Impacts in the United States. The stability of the Earth’s climate over the past ten thousand years contributed to the growth of agriculture and therefore, a thriving human civilization. We are now at high risk of seriously destabilizing the Earth’s climate and irreparably harming people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people.

We appreciate that you are making aggressive and imaginative use of the limited tools available to you in the face of a recalcitrant Congress. The actions of these organizations have been extensively documented in peerreviewed academic research (Brulle, 2013) and in recent books including: Doubt is their Product (Michaels, 2008), Climate Cover-Up (Hoggan & Littlemore, 2009), Merchants of Doubt (Oreskes & Conway, 2010), The Climate War (Pooley, 2010), and in The Climate Deception Dossiers (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2015). We strongly endorse Senator Whitehouse’s call for a RICO investigation.

The methods of these organizations are quite similar to those used earlier by the tobacco industry. A RICO investigation (1999 to 2006) played an important role in stopping the tobacco industry from continuing to deceive the American people about the dangers of smoking. If corporations in the fossil fuel industry and their supporters are guilty of the misdeeds that have been documented in books and journal articles, it is imperative that these misdeeds be stopped as soon as possible so that America and the world can get on with the critically important business of finding effective ways to restabilize the Earth’s climate, before even more lasting damage is done.

I got to thinking of this in this in the context of the 'red scare', 'McCarthyism', and 'black-listing'.  Same shit, different assholes.  History will be no more kind to these people than it was to Joe McCarthy and his minions and hopefully much less so.  I'll work toward that outcome.

Relax men, the next call for racketeering investigation will undoubtedly start thus:

Dear President Obama, Attorney General Lynch, and War Director Fruttkake,

As you know, an overwhelming majority of non-psychopaths are convinced about the potentially serious adverse effects of human-induced wars, on totally false and fraudulent pretenses, on human health, agriculture, and biodiversity...........

Look, we've got to stick with the science, and everyone knows that the consensus of Scientists is that the world is warming up.  And it's caused by Deniers.  The ones that don't agree with the Consensus, those guys.  But don't worry - our Scientists continue to do great work, even while the naysayers argue ridiculous things.  I mean, can you believe it?  They argue it hasn't warmed in twenty years, the Antarctic ice is growing, and crops grow better with CO2 higher.

You know we know better, because we're the Consensus.  And don't worry, you'll get rewarded hansomely for being on the right side.  Now here's an example of right thinking - trees can't do the job of fixing the planet - it's way past that, almost too late to save the planet at this point.

But if we could just make a new, better tree, then paint all the land white, so it would reflect sun back up into the sky - that might work.

“The planet as a whole is doing what was expected in terms of warming. Sea ice as a whole is decreasing as expected, but just like with global warming, not every location with sea ice will have a downward trend in ice extent,” Parkinson said.

“Its really not surprising to people in the climate field that not every location on the face of Earth is acting as expected – it would be amazing if everything did,” Parkinson said. “The Antarctic sea ice is one of those areas where things have not gone entirely as expected. So it’s natural for scientists to ask, ‘OK, this isn’t what we expected, now how can we explain it?’”

It's time to talk about The Children and puppy dogs drowning.  Unless the Deniers have grabbed them first and ate them.

Children will bear brunt of climate change impact, new study says

Most comprehensive climate change review to date warns of risks to children, with Unicef arguing that children have been largely left out of the debate so far

Children will bear the brunt of the impact of climate change because of their increased risk of health problems, malnutrition and migration, according to a new study published on Monday. And food prices are likely to soar as a result of warming, undoing the progress made in combating world hunger.

The findings are published as scientists began meeting in Stockholm to produce the most comprehensive assessment yet of our knowledge of climate change. Over the next five days, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, bringing together the world's leading experts, will thrash out the final details of a message to the world's governments.

They are expected to warn that climate change is almost certainly caused by human actions, and that it will lead to a global temperature rise likely to top 2C, with related effects including the shrinking of the Arctic ice cap and glaciers, a rise in sea level by nearly 1 metre by the end of this century and more extreme rainfall in parts of the globe.

Unicef argues that, although children are more vulnerable to the effects of global warming, they have been largely left out of the debate. "We are hurtling towards a future where the gains being made for the world's children are threatened and their health, wellbeing, livelihoods and survival are compromised … despite being the least responsible for the causes," said David Bull, Unicef's UK executive director. "We need to listen to them."

Children born last year will come of age in 2030, by which time the effects of climate change in the form of an increase in droughts, floods and storms are likely to be more in evidence. In the 10 most vulnerable countries, including Bangladesh, India and the Philippines, there are 620 million children under 18.

Unicef estimates that 25 million more children will suffer malnourishment because of climate change, with a further 100 million suffering food insecurity, where they and their families are on the verge of running out. Children among the 150-200 million people estimated to have to flee their homes because of climate change will suffer more than adults because of their relative lack of resources and higher vulnerability to disease. In heatwaves, likely to grow more intense and frequent under climate change, babies and small children are more likely to die or suffer heatstroke because they find it difficult to regulate their body heat.

Separately, a report by Oxfam warned that global warming would cause rapid rises in food prices, causing severe consequences in poor countries. In pointed contrast to climate sceptics, who have seized on some of the areas of uncertainty in the IPCC assessment to claim that global warming is a far-off and minor problem, Oxfam listed recent examples of extreme weather that have caused food shortages and raised prices, quoting scientific estimates that these are likely to increase in number as warming continues. "Today one person in eight goes to bed hungry. Analysis suggests that the number of people at risk of hunger is projected to increase by 10-20% by 2050 as a result of climate change," the study found.

The authors cited the 2012 drought in Russia, which cut the grain harvest by a quarter, resulting in grain and bread prices rocketing and many farmers falling into serious debt and hardship. The same year, the worst drought in 50 years in the mid-west of the US cut maize yields by a quarter, leading to a 40% rise in prices. Two years before, the devastating Pakistan floods destroyed 570,000 hectares of crops, and 80% of food stored was lost in some areas.

Oxfam also cites a study that suggested the 2011 drought in East Africa and famine in Somalia were made more likely by climate change. One of the problems with estimating the future effects of warming is that natural events such as storms, floods and droughts happen anyway and it is hard to blame particular occurrences on global warming. On this, the panel is expected to say on Friday that extreme weather effects are more likely because of climate change but will stop well short of attributing specific events solely to climate change.

Tim Gore from Oxfam said: "We want a world in which everyone enjoys the right to affordable and nutritious food, and we cannot allow climate change to throw us off course. Leaders listening to the latest findings from climate scientists this week must remember that a hot world is a hungry world. They must take urgent action to slash emissions and direct more resources to building a sustainable food system."

Yaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwn.

Climate change could kill your pet, warns the RSPCA

Climate change could kill pets, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), as warmer temperatures cause an increase in exotic diseases among cats and dogs.
