This is the one that I'd like to get a batch of

http://www.datalocker.com/media/datasheets/datasheet_sentry_sept2012rev4.pdf

Simple and cheap.  Shame they don't make them anymore.
Did you check these simple and cheap http://www.integralmemory.com/product-categories/encrypted-usb-drives

Good spot!  I'll have a chat with integral.

I just got a really useless quote back from one of my suppliers.  £1 off per unit if I buy 100.

I have several of 4gb and one 32gb. Sadly they don't have any for linux

If we had to rebrand, could we just go with DuffCoin?  It's still a D so we can keep the logo, and it's harmless.  I don't really want to but this arguing constantly is getting to be too much!

My wife is constantly put off by the misogyny and sexism in the crypto world so she'd like to propose that we rebrand as Peniscoin in response to Titcoin etc.

EDIT:  She has just sketched a pretty eye catching logo too!  Undecided

I must say I agree strongly that rebranding is important, and yes, now would be a good time; before it is more widely known. I also recognize that there is strong sentiment against the idea. Huh

Simply consider something as ubiquitous and harmless(?) as "Black Friday." This past November it was reported that marketers in Egypt and other Arabic countries wanted in on the marketing craze, but refused to accept the term because Friday was a "holy" day and "Black" indicated evil. As a result they coined the phrase, and started the tradition of "White Friday," which apparently was a great success.

I hate to disappoint anybody, but DRK is not near as popular (yet;-) as Black Friday--If the need was seen to rebrand it, in order to gain market acceptance by 1/4 of the world's population--do we wish to alienate that same population (and others)?

I work in what could be called "international aid/development," and I see a critical role for something like DRK, but I can assure you that the major players in this field will be very reluctant to work with it, as the name now stands.

Many who know nothing of crypto-currencies would gladly get a wallet and send funds directly to someone like Malala Yousafzai, (the young girl who just won the Nobel Peace Prize) and the thousands like her. Do you really think she, or others like her would use something with the name Dark Coin? Whether you believe in a Devil or not, those who do, will refuse the association, and both they and the coin will suffer.

If we had to rebrand, could we just go with DuffCoin?  It's still a D so we can keep the logo, and it's harmless.

I'd be a fan of:

Dash - Digital cash mashed together (unfortunately, there is a cryptonote coin named Dashcoin. I'd drop the coin part personally). Further, Dash implies fast (hello instantx)
Dinera

I think the D is crucial and allows the same font type and logo that has been used thus far to remain. Dash I think would be very fitting. "Do you happen to accept Dash"? "Dash accepted here"
Can I suggest DiCash?

Just my 2 duffs but whilst I agree that the name Darkcoin is seen negatively by a lot of people outside of the crypto world (I have literally never spoken to a newbie about it and not had to answer questions about drugs, child porn etc etc) I think its also really important to educate the world that going dark in a privacy sense is a very positive thing.

I suppose in time, the darknet and "going dark" will not be perceived negatively as people begin to understand what dark actualy means in an IT context but it will take time.

Unfortunately for Darkcoin, it will probably take quite a long time for perceptions to shift.  The big question is, is Darkcoin strong enough to be the catalyst for a change in public perception?  Or shall we concede that Darkcoin is as much about instantTX as it is about privacy and call it Clearcoin instead?

Let me start by saying that the brand Darkcoin has been instrumental in helping us get the exposure we have had so far and attracting  investors. Evan is still refining Darksend and InstantX is still on the works, there are many things missing.

I think we should move forward promoting adoption with Darkcoin and see how far we can take it. I think  there are many things we could do if the need arises like creating  OEM wallets with special branding for specific purposes. For example, for an international funding situation, in which we launch a special client called HelpMalala, is downloaded from her website but powered by Darkcoin and when you buy malalas you are actually buying DRK. Is just an idea.

On the other hand, if we are eventually re branding I think it should be opportunity driven, I dont like the idea of re branding just because we feel it might be an issue in the future. I would like for it to be a little more real. For example, if we talk to Bitpay and they say they are willing to add and support Darkcoin if we change the name to Dash. Then cool we might go for it but we are guaranteed a big leap in adoption by changing the name.

For now, I think Darkcoin is perfect, it attracts attention and people engage with us. Time is also an important factor as businesses and the regulators see that it isn't really a big deal they will slowly adopt and be cool. I think is very hard to be able to anticipate what is going to happen in the crypto world so we might just have to adapt as things become more clear.

Edit: Oblox, I think the KYC rules etc apply primarily to banks, but no doubt you are correct that any truly anonymous system will be a tough sell. But there is a huge underground economy (think Craig's list/garage sales, not Silk road) that would be thrilled to use something like DRK.

Wow, never thought of that!

I also like Dash.  Too bad it's taken, though like you said, we can just be DASH without the coin.  Still, it's nicer to be more original.  Evan is so busy trying to get things working smoothly, I don't know how we'd do this.  I'm sick of it being an issue.  I never thought of the name Dark as being negative, so I thought the argument was lame, but with it persisting over and over, and more so the bigger Darkcoin gets... I'm starting to think, change it and be done.

However, if we do change it, we'll have to make a big splash about it.  A huge deal, it should be part of a marketing campaign.  Darkcoin matures into Dash, the fastest crypto currency on the market!  You can pay for your gas at the pump with Dash!

But this means opening up the wound, arguing, ugh... and even my saying something is going to cause trouble.  But I do want Darkcoin to win the world's ecash prize, and if this helps us get there.  Then maybe it's time, but it must be done with flair and pomp and circumstance Wink

No voting on the name, though please!  Names can be thrown out there, but lets let Evan decide amongst the developers what's best, and lets not drag it on forever.  BTW, I'm speaking out of my @$$, I haven't asked anyone and haven't any authority whatsoever!!!!

It's not like the name should be changed in a hurry and also a rebranding could easily be taken into consideration at the final release of InstantX. You weigh in which of these technologies would be more attractive to the general public (anonymity and speed or both) and change the variables (name + marketing) accordingly. You could also do a "name changing" contest, polls and everything. I'm pretty sure that even Evan had this type of conversation with himself, maybe long before we even thought about writing on the subject.

You can also keep Darkcoin and you will see that the need of a 'name change' will come naturally as all of these new technologies like InstantX, Masternode applications/services and others will be implemented, and then you would want them to be shown off by a more representative name.

My previous opinion was expressed as a result of what Darkcoin did for me on our first encounter. Unfortunately, It inspired fraud and uncertainty and it's almost comical, because you can do almost the same type of things with fiat, bitcoin, dogecoin and others. It's just that this name is scary and it creates this strong perception. Heh, i hope i don't sound ridiculous. It's just an opinion. I could be just an isolated case.

it's that time again.

name change discussions seem to happen every 760 pages, give or take 1,000 pages.

Personally, I think InstantTX or ITX can be the trading name.

I don't think anyone has ever proposed PenisCoin before. Interesting. Maybe wait until the bugs are mostly ironed out, otherwise you will get people citing cock ups, flops, etc.,.

Had to run out for a few hours and missed some great posts. I really appreciate the depth of serious thought here, and don't for a moment think that I have the only (let alone the best) solution in mind. I am simply trying to give airtime to some considerations that I have not hear being expressed, and feel should be considered in the conversation.

Minotaur26, I whole heartedly agree that the Darkcoin name has been very helpful up to this point, and probably not yet outlived its usefulness. I also think that opportunity driven rebranding is a good idea. The only problem I see with it, is that it opens the charge of chronyism, (though this would fade with time), and the best time/environment for rebranding might be missed due to lack of a suitable agency. I also think the "special client" holds promise, and TLC has already demonstrated the feasibility of this approach. However, I see no way of hiding the identity of the underlying coin, and that would probably still render thing hazardous or simply distasteful for some.

The flexible client idea gives rise to an interesting opportunity... Why should a coin whose primary reason for existence is privacy/anonymity even have a name?! Think; unnamed coin, no-name coin, or (my favorite) "__coin", or the ever-popular YourCoin. The official client could have an "Insert Name here" field on first installing, which could be changed later by a simple menu entry. Don't you think Camosaul would love having his very own "CamoCoin?" It has a nice (and fitting) ring to it. It might even persuade him to show up here again! Wink

It could probably be designed to have some distinct security advantages if the client installed using the name given at first-run. How many virus/trojans would be looking for strix.conf or strix.dat or the directory .strix?

One thing that seems clear from this latest round of discussion on this, is that as what's-its-name coin matures the idea of a name change is gaining traction. In view of Minotaur26's idea of opportunity driven branding, I suggest that the foundation consider establishing a standing committee to consider these things, and be on the lookout for appropriate names and opportunities. I nominate TanteStephana2 as chair, given her clear thinking on the subject. I might have suggested Stonehedge's wife, but she is clearly prejudiced, and I would rather not think that Stonehedge's anatomy was in anyway motivation for suggested names.  Grin Grin Grin    (Well, so much for my comment about serious thought. Roll Eyes)

Peace to you all...

@Strix, good post and thank you for bringing it up. I think the message is that we are all open to be flexible but we need to let the market drive the direction in which we will ultimately go. Basically, lets not solve a problem that doesn't exist yet, with the understanding that we will all remain vigilant and that if it is ever an issue or if an opportunity arises that requires us to move in a different direction and it makes sense we will be open to do it.  So our position as a community should remain fluid, there is no need to be conclusive at this time. We move on as Darkcoin we revise it every few months and see where we are.

I love this old tradition in the Darkcoin thread: every new generation of darkcoiners should discuss the name, rebranding, etc..  Grin

One small tip: This is no going to happen. We  are one of the strongest brands in the alt-world, and the brand is being strong over the Internet (https://darkcointalk.org/forums/darkcoin-news.16).
