I am working this out the Bitmaintech support. They have been pretty helpful. I went to the store and brought an infrared thermometer and opened up a machine at their request. I tried disabling if temperature is above 80 C but it is NOT HASHING at all. I've tested this with 2 different working PSUs and still nothing. I think thermometer and board is defective.

It looks like the thermometer is defective. Here is what I get in my dashboard as well:

Bitmain, is it possible to run your own pwm 4 pin fan controller in addition to the one thats built into the S3 itself so I can have better control of the speed? we have limited choices in quieter 38MM thick frame fans so this is the only other solution I can think of.

Something like this: http://www.zalman.com/global/product/Product_Read.php?Idx=375

it seems that you got a bad heat sensor on your hashing PCB. Just send me your order info, including the address, phone number, etc. i will make records and arrange RMA for u.

Did people flash the latest 1024 firmware?

Did it help anything but the "better firefox and chrome" support? - ie. make the miner run the updated cgminer properly..?

My miner came with the august 26th firmware and I don't have any issues with it, bitmain said the latest is not necessarry if its working well for you.

many people who bought S3's (me included) are afraid to update anyway due to risk of bricking the unit.

I flashed 3 of my S3+ Miners and they have been more steady in terms of Hashrate for the past 2 days.  Less HW errors and more consistent.  I only flashed my 3 S3+ Miners that were having issues with dramatic hashrate fluctuations.  The rest I'm leaving as is since I haven't had any issues with them.  I figure if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

well I just had my first issue with my S3+ antminer, it was running solid for about 3 days and then all of a sudden I lost hashing power, one of the boards just completely shutdown, I did a reboot and that didn't solve it, then I reset the power supply and both are working again.

The mining pool I was on had an ORPHAN block just before this happened too, kinda wierd.

What's an "ambivalent temperature"?

I think he meant ambient temperature. You know, "room temperature".

Ambivalent temperature is the temperature at which point you don't care what the temperature is.

Good one, we have a lot of such temperatures around here. It was 80F/26.7 C today, Nov 4.
Just imagine what is happening in July-Aug.

ambient temperature does make a different on how cool the PSU and S3 miner runs, I just today moved my S3 under my table closer to the floor to stop the fans from ramping up cause the air closer to the ground is cooler. Its also more quiet along the ground and the fan noise on the S3 is actually tolerable now.

So for anyone here having temp issues or fan speed ramp up, I recommend doing this.

the heat on the PSU wen't from barely warm to no heat at all after I did this. I also found that the cooler the PSU runs the more efficent the miner runs. My hashrate and shares acually wen't up a tiny bit on the pool.

Thanks for the clarification.  I thought it was some kinda very technical metric for temperatures.

Ambivalent temperature is the temperature at which point you don't care what the temperature is.

...and I thought all this time that it has something to do with the temperature not being able to decide whether it's a Farenheit or a Celsius.

Anyone using the Umisoo hosting service? I would love to hear some feedback, it seems like a great option considering the shipping of these things are almost the cost of one unit.

I assume the above IP is a typo, but just incase the default Antminer IP address is 192.168.1.99

This forum thread is helpful as well - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=702653

I was having same problem with my miner. Your miner is not fully powered up.
Switch of the power supply & turn on after 5m, make sure your power supply is dedicate to this miner (i.e. one power supply for one miner)
Repeat the above step with a gap of 5m until your miner is fully powered up. If you succeed than set the frequency to s3+ default & reboot. Make sure your miner is powered up for 2 days. This will fix the problem, if not than change the power supply. Please let me know if it worked for you.

Usually because you dont have the Power supply setup or connected correctly or you dont have enough power going to the antminer from the psu  What wattage is your PSU?
