You might want to call Bitmain at +1-844-248-6246 and talk to one of the live tech on the phone.  If you RMA the fan, you should be able to get the replacement.  Depends on where you are in the world, the tech or rep may offer you a small reimbersement.

Also, any Bitmain customers have option of returning the defective items to the following address without prior authorization. Must have Bitmaintech.com order confirmation page printed and included with a note what is wrong with the item. (If the item was not defective, you may get billed for the diagnostic fee or return shipping fee)

Bitmain Warranty
3700 Quebec St. #100239
Denver, Colorado 80207

Telephone: +1-844-248-6246

WARNING:

If the item was mis-diagnosed or mis-configured item, more than likely you will receive an invoice before your item be return to you...  Also, if your warranty is expired or none eligible status (such as purchased item 2nd hand or non-direct purchase, they can still repair or restore it for you with a small fee)

If you want to obtain the prior authorization from Bitmain, instead of PM them, send email to info@bitmaintech.com  and type "RMA Request - MODEL# - (COUNTRY NAME)" in the subject line with your Bitmaintech.com order ID number and the following info int he body of the email

*****************************************************
Subject: RMA Request - S3 - (USA)

Order ID: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Name: Mr. Bitmain Antminer
Address: 123 Aceme St, Los Angeles, CA 90001
Phone: 323-123-4567
E-mial: yourname@gmail.com

Description of what's wrong with your item

Is it possible to order a replacement controller board?  I bricked one of my S3's with a bad firmware load, so I do not think it is eligible for an RMA, and I would like to buy a replacement controller.

I ordered an Arduino kit and will try to fix it myself, but I would rather buy a whole new controller.  I found the method using an Arduino here.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=330665.msg8622866#msg8622866

The S3 Ethernet connection gets a link, but no IP.  I can see the MAC address from the switch.  Is there a way to fix this by communicating over layer 2 using the Ethernet port?

Please, no responses about using the reset button. That is not working.  Unless there is some secret Morse Code method. Smiley

Thanks in advance for helpful feedback.

Make sure there is no other device on the network with the same IP as the s3 default one etc.

If no luck, do you have access to a cp2102 usb to UART bridge and a 0.1" pin header

I have a guide I posted about my experiences unbricking a s1 controller using the serial debugging port which was entirely successful and the unit is now running again as a space heater/miner on my desk @144Gh/s undervolted

Thank you.  I ordered a "USB to UART 5-Pin CP2102 Module Serial Converter"  (http://www.dx.com/p/81872), and this kit which comes with pin headers.  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HI0RYJK/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item    Could you provide the link to your post?

one of my S3 fans totally died. 0 RPM. on the fan it says model number JDH1238B I had a 3 pin 2000 RPM fan but won't fit because pins are larger and 4 pin. Any advise for me to fix or buy? Send it back to China or cut the connector?

You need a 120mm PWM fan, which has a 4 pin connector. While waiting for your RMA, you could fit a Corsair SP120 high performance fan. If you do, I would put the Corsair on the inlet and your good Bitmain fan on the outlet.  I've been running my S3s with these fans on the inlets from the outset.  Got them from Amazon.

OK, I will check it out. These are the fans I tried, but they only have 3 pin. The 4 pin looks very large, but I will trust your suggestions.

the front cpu fan out of Dell Precision 390/380 are the same fans, you just need to move the pins in the connector to match. assuming your fan is actually dead.
I used these fans to add to all the S1's I had and replace the front fans on the 2013 S1 models since that fans max rpm was 2000 making over clocked s1's run too hot.

If you are comfortable with circuit boards and serial devices I would just go the route you are going to use the serial port and upload the firmware over tftp like he has shown.
It is most likely a much quicker fix than buying a replacement or getting a response especially since China is on Holiday for a few days.

Thanks.  Yes, I plan to try the serial/tftp method.

It sure would be nice to be able to purchase a "spare" controller board to have in my inventory.  If anyone has a good communication channel with Bitmain, please relay this message.  I will also send an email, but I have not gotten a response to any of my emails.

The only thing I had to do to make it fit was trim off the little plastic rib from the middle of the 4 pin connector on the fan.  I mentioned this fan because it's an easy and quick fix, but if you try it make sure you get the PWM version.  They're on the pricey side, though, so I would definitely check out bspurloc's Dell fan suggestion first, as it might be the best option.

If it's "stuck" at 225, then you have an s3+ (or at least the newest firmware that's what they use).  To overclock with these, the easiest solution is to go to the Miner Configuration tab and choose Advanced, then change the frequency that way.  (You can also edit the /etc/config/cgminer file directly, but that's more work)

The firmware on S3+s ignores the asic-freq file.

I would do what he says I just did  and just found this post but i also knew they had US support.

DO call them even if you bought a new one from a resellers not direct be nice and you may get it replaced no matter were  you bought it  with free shipping  as long as  it is  still with in  there 90 days and you can  prove were you bought it .

if you bought it direct they will replace it no question  asked i just had one replaced with free shipping otw to me once i dropped it off at UPS Smiley .

these guys are awesome i know I complained about the S4 but that was mostly the  price,

Hey

The error - Write failed: Broken... Usually happens when ssh times out.  If that's the case the download may not have completed.  Try renaming the cgminer.bak file to restore the original version.  If it works you could try the update again Smiley

You forgot to set cgminer as executable.   Type "chmod +x /usr/bin/cgminer".  That should do it.

thanks atledenin but that error only came up after the miner rebooted so the ssh connection was lost. I did rename the cgminer file back but the miner didnt start mining again. I ended up having to reflash back to factory settings and inputting my details in again. oh well at least it's mining again Smiley but with old cgminer Sad

You just missed a step is all. Step 4 below.  After you use wget to download cgminer, you have to change the permissions to allow execute.  The permission denied error is because there is no permission to execute the command.

   1. cd /usr/bin
   2. mv cgminer cgminer.bak
   3. wget http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/antminer/s3/4.6.0-140908/cgminer
   4. chmod +x cgminer
   5. Reboot
