thanks atledenin but that error only came up after the miner rebooted so the ssh connection was lost. I did rename the cgminer file back but the miner didnt start mining again. I ended up having to reflash back to factory settings and inputting my details in again. oh well at least it's mining again Smiley but with old cgminer Sad

You just missed a step is all. Step 4 below.  After you use wget to download cgminer, you have to change the permissions to allow execute.  The permission denied error is because there is no permission to execute the command.

   1. cd /usr/bin
   2. mv cgminer cgminer.bak
   3. wget http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/antminer/s3/4.6.0-140908/cgminer
   4. chmod +x cgminer
   5. Reboot

no need to reboot the device
/etc/init.d/cgminer restart
 or
/etc/init.d/cgminer stop
/etc/init.d/cgminer start

rebooting gains you nothing except not understanding what you are doing.
all u r doing in this process is replacing a single file that is presently running, so simply telling it to stop the old one and start the new one is all that is needed... u r not changing or modifying anything OS related to need a reboot.
just like u dont need to reboot when changing frequency...

In the same breath you can say simply browsing to System->Startup and clicking Restart (in the cgminer row) after downloading does the trick just as well. But in the grand scheme of things, there is nothing of any significance to loose by rebooting.

Couple things.

1.  The steps were already provided, so I copied as a convenience.
2.  The reboot may not be necessary, but is also a convenience that does not hurt, and it ensures a clean restart.
3.  You have a typo.  The command is /etc/init.d/cgminer.
4.  I think the comment of "not understanding what you are doing" was not necessary.  The info can be provided without put-downs.

Tech support told me to try the fan on another S3 to make sure it wasn't the board. I did that and now they are shipping me out another fan, I don't have to return the original fan. Thanks for the help!

You might want to call Bitmain at +1-844-248-6246 and talk to one of the live tech on the phone.  If you RMA the fan, you should be able to get the replacement.  Depends on where you are in the world, the tech or rep may offer you a small reimbersement.

Also, any Bitmain customers have option of returning the defective items to the following address without prior authorization. Must have Bitmaintech.com order confirmation page printed and included with a note what is wrong with the item. (If the item was not defective, you may get billed for the diagnostic fee or return shipping fee)

Bitmain Warranty
3700 Quebec St. #100239
Denver, Colorado 80207

Telephone: +1-844-248-6246

WARNING:

If the item was mis-diagnosed or mis-configured item, more than likely you will receive an invoice before your item be return to you...  Also, if your warranty is expired or none eligible status (such as purchased item 2nd hand or non-direct purchase, they can still repair or restore it for you with a small fee)

If you want to obtain the prior authorization from Bitmain, instead of PM them, send email to info@bitmaintech.com  and type "RMA Request - MODEL# - (COUNTRY NAME)" in the subject line with your Bitmaintech.com order ID number and the following info int he body of the email

*****************************************************
Subject: RMA Request - S3 - (USA)

Order ID: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Name: Mr. Bitmain Antminer
Address: 123 Aceme St, Los Angeles, CA 90001
Phone: 323-123-4567
E-mial: yourname@gmail.com

Description of what's wrong with your item

*****************************************************

one of my S3 fans totally died. 0 RPM. on the fan it says model number JDH1238B I had a 3 pin 2000 RPM fan but won't fit because pins are larger and 4 pin. Any advise for me to fix or buy? Send it back to China or cut the connector?

I would do what he says I just did  and just found this post but i also knew they had US support.

DO call them even if you bought a new one from a resellers not direct be nice and you may get it replaced no matter were  you bought it  with free shipping  as long as  it is  still with in  there 90 days and you can  prove were you bought it .

if you bought it direct they will replace it no question  asked i just had one replaced with free shipping otw to me once i dropped it off at UPS Smiley .

these guys are awesome i know I complained about the S4 but that was mostly the  price,

there is no reason to reboot and the reboot step was added simple because someone didnt know how to properly cycle something in unix.

do you reboot when you download a browser? do you reboot when you add a plugin to your browser? do u reboot when you install candy crush?

except rebooting it is directly due to not understanding what you are doing.
stopping cgminer and restarting it ensures a clean restart. to think it doesnt is from not understanding what is happening.

I certainly would reboot if I installed any of the above on an openwrt system (pertinently the one on S1 and S3 rigs) with nothing near the resources of the typical *nix box you are accustomed to.
Now for my question: Do you reboot your antminer rigs every so often (unlike the typical *nix boxes that can run for years un-rebooted) and why?

EDIT: - And if you REALLY think about it, we are talking about rebooting when you install the less resource wasting cgminer as witnessed by the improved UI response (and of-course the securiy patches). The point was, rebooting does NOT cost you a thing, and may indeed be beneficial since you still need to reboot the rig every so often.

no reason to reboot except of course when I tried using the cgminer stop/start or restart commands they failed to work and generated an error so the only option was to reboot. which funnily enough worked.  and I understand why

of course actually what I should have done was
1 cd /etc/init.d
2 cgminer stop
3 cd /usr/bin
4 mv cgminer cgminer.bak
5 wget http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/antminer/s3/4.6.0-140908/cgminer
6 chmod +x cgminer
7 cd /etc/init.d
8 cgminer start

or do it in 5 steps

 1. cd /usr/bin
 2. mv cgminer cgminer.bak
 3. wget http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/antminer/s3/4.6.0-140908/cgminer

 5. Reboot

I ordered 42 antminers S3. But 4 are not properly (1 half speed, the rest even worse). Offcourse I submitted a 'ticket' to webmaster@bitm... with all order numbers etc., a few days ago, but not an answer..? In the pre-sale fase they answered within 3 hours, but when seeking support they are 'busy'. Does anyone else encounter this problem? If yes. The pre-order scam is over and we got a new scam starting here..

In case anyone wants some more stats on power consumption.  I've got 2 new S3+ batch 8 up and running today.  At default 225 they were each pulling about 353watts after the power supply (the power supply has a meter that shows the wattage going through it, but this doesn't include what the power supply itself is consuming but does show about 91% efficiency so it's probably about 840watts at the wall for both when overclocked, if I did my calculations correctly).  After overclocking both of them to 237.5, one increased to 382/383watts and the other increased to 387/388watts.  So you can average that out between the two at about 385.5watts each when overclocked to 237.5 on 110vac.

It is likely nobody has been around to respond to messages for the past few days, as there is a public holiday / festival right now - National Day, October 1 - 7.

...then the wifey responded:

"But honey, you should know by now that expressing your thoughts and proving your point at bitcointalk doesn't mean chit unless, of course, you're one of the Bitcoin Gods or at the very least, you know how to code.  Believe me...my ex was one of them.  Don't get fooled.  Their proclivity to libertarianism is only a facade and a matter of convenience.  Now, come to bed and make me happy!"

no reason to reboot except of course when I tried using the cgminer stop/start or restart commands they failed to work and generated an error so the only option was to reboot. which funnily enough worked.  and I understand why

of course actually what I should have done was
1 cd /etc/init.d
2 cgminer stop
3 cd /usr/bin
4 mv cgminer cgminer.bak
5 wget http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/antminer/s3/4.6.0-140908/cgminer
6 chmod +x cgminer
7 cd /etc/init.d
8 cgminer start

or do it in 5 steps

 1. cd /usr/bin
 2. mv cgminer cgminer.bak
 3. wget http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/antminer/s3/4.6.0-140908/cgminer
 4. chmod +x cgminer
 5. Reboot

Thanks to all who contributed to above. Reminds me of my old UNIX days. Anyway my current cgminer is V3.12.0-1 and they're all working fine. Are the security issues bad enough to warrant upgrade or why should I install newer version?

Your mining can be hijacked midstream and redirected to another pool and you'd not know it.  You decide if that's critical or not.
