Issue with S5, here is a new one for ya. I have several S5's all running great on this pool. 2 days ago one of them started reporting only 800-850 Gh, while since placed in service its been reporting 1200-1290 Gh on the pool and on the UI. I have re-flashed with cgminer 4.9, rebooted, restored to factory etc. The UI reports the correct 1200-1290 hash rates, all chips report good, temps look normal. Nothing looks odd or different on the miner UI. I even tried 2 other pools and then all report speed at pool around 800-850 Gh while on the miner showing 1200-1250 avg.

Any ideas?

That's a weird one where it's actually showing an over-clocked hash rate but running well under.

Of course it can take a few hours, to a day, to show the expected hash rate, but regularly showing the same low value on multiple pools would mean it's the miner.

Also make sure it's not failing over to a 2nd pool with the remainder of the hash rate.

You can test the 2 boards to see if it's one particularly causing it i.e. power off, unplug one of the 2 top wide ribbon cables, then power it on and see if it's getting half the expected - then reverse that to test the other board.

Otherwise, yeah I'd ask in the S5 thread and see what others have to say there.

So after further testing, I pointed the miner to Ghash, it ran there for about 3 hours and it reports pretty much the same stats. On Gash the 5min refreshes every 10 seconds or so, I can see it go to 1.3 hang there and then start to drop back down to 800 or so, then back to 1 or 1.1 and drops back down. after 3 hours there, the 15m is 924Gh and 1hr is 990Gh, but now the 5 min is 1.21. So its like bouncing all over the place, now I am seeing similar behavior with another miner on Kano. In both cases the UI stats show 5s over 1.2 all the time and the avg is 1.23Th since last reboot 3 hours ago.

I have done it both ways, set Diff manually at 1024, let is run for a day or two and then also set to zero and let pool manage diff. No difference.

NOTE: Some of my S5's show best share and some show zero, same FW and same pool. Also some show DiffR and some don't. I'd expect the UI to show at least the same type of data across all my S5's on the same pool and same FW.

You can double check to see what your factory settings were by logging in using Putty

This was one of my factory config files on one of my s5's
as you can see factory freq was 350
and factory voltage was 0725

It does not reset the settings, I have the box checked to leave setting intact. I have 10 or so of the S5's, half are running at 375 and half at 400, just depends where I have them. The ones at 400 are in a cooler area then the ones at 375. They are all between 53-60c and this just started a few days ago.

It is summer here and most of mine dont like to go over 393.

 Anything higher and they seem to have hash values that go high then so low that its more beneficial to just lower the frequency and keep it stable.

I have 2 that I cant take over 362 or they just seem to drop in hash rate...

all I can suggest is take your problem children and lower their freq until you find a happy spot.



I don't think it is the same problem you are having but I had a weird one.
I had a bad network switch that kept causing some of my miners to stop hashing altogether. I kept coming home to random miners at zero hash rate.. and kept trying different things over a couple of weeks until I replaced the network switch on a whim and that solved it.

So I have my 1+TH back online with a little $ help from a friend. It's not the best equipment for handling mining & lightning problems but... Besides, at the rate I've been going thru this stuff, maybe a little less $ is better!

Hi Kano, I have a question thats not really Bitcoin related but as you are a programmer/linux user i wandered if you could point me in the right direction? With the advent of windows 10 with its built in backdoor and keylogger type software thats for our benefit and the new patches for windows 7 (I currently use) that will install the same/similar software.  I know its in the form of an update that can be hidden such as the free windows 10 update that i made hidden but then became magically un-hidden and wanted to be installed. I feel these 2 things could be used by hackers in the future to gain access to my wallet maybe? In any case i want to make the jump to Linux so my question is this. Which is the best distro for combined usability and security? (I know one may trade off against the other)

I'd suggest xubuntu
Linux in general is quite secure.

xubuntu is ubuntu with xfce, and ubuntu is a derivative of debian.
The xfce window manager is my own preference but tends to be simple and less annoying than others IMO.

It's simple to install and I run it and I use it and ubuntu server with no problems building/compiling any bitcoin related code I use
(cgminer, ckpool, bitcoind)

It doesn't automatically update stuff for you so you have to keep an eye on that yourself.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm looking into xubuntu now. I will set up a dual boot configuration and test it out and get a feel for it. Hopefully Microsoft loose a lot of clients due to this and learn from it!

if you are new to linux, linux MINT is geared towards newbies.. it has full ui and installer.

Another ckdb restart - again as usual no miners are expected to be affected since ckpool isn't/wasn't restarted.

Anyone wondering about how long it takes, at the moment to load the entire history of the pool and then do a catch up on the last hour or two back to the state it was when I stopped ckdb, and then rolling forward to the current point in time, takes about 13 minutes.

This change fixes the block stats "Age" field (and renames it "Time")
The field states how long it took to find the number of blocks so e.g. the last 5 blocks includes the time it took to find the 5th one and not the time since the last one was found (the time since the last block is in the page header of course)

I also added a red line on the shift page showing the start of the last payout.
Thus below that line shifts can not get any more rewards.
Some of the trailing shifts above the red line also will not get rewards as time since the last block increases, but none below can.

I tried out Mint a few years ago to tread the waters with linux. I believe version 12 possibly?! That version didn't have drivers for AMD GPU's at the time over HDMI so i worked around with some old PC speakers instead of relying on HDMI. Do you know if this is still the case as i liked the look and feel of Mint.

I'm using Mint 17.1 with an older LCD monitor (no HDMI) and lower end AMD video card.
