The very worst card for such risers, is the 750/750TI without external power, as the card is entirely powered from PCIe, but even with externally powered cards, those risers are known to fry quite frequently. Were you lucky enough to not get any damage beyond the risers themselves? The asus rock BTC h61 or h81 has 2 extra power slots. 4 pin=150W (this is standard on all motherboards) 4 pin * 2= 300 (use two seperate cables) total of 450W No need for powered risers with 6 750ti. That doesn't matter in this case because not the motherboard burned but the riser itself so it will do so regardless of mobo. Unless you use cards with additional power connectors as said earlier by myagui. Does a USB riser actually use USB protocol or is it a straight replacement for the ribbon cable?
They are just a replacement for the ribbon cable for the sole purpose of connecting the parts and it's not using USB protocol. USB (cable) is just much more relieable, durable, flexible, it's shielded, cheap and convenient because it has a connection interface so all the parts of a riser isn't just soldered together into one mess.

I put unpowered cards only in x16 slots. Anything going through an x1 slot & riser (ever a powered riser) should have direct power connections on the card.
Powered USB-type risers do not have the input PCIe power pins connected, they have an external power port on the riser itself, usually a SATA or MOLEX connector. This way, both riser and card get all power feeding directly from the PSU, and nothing out of the motherboard. These risers kill 2 birds with one stone: You're not using high power over a flat ribbon cable - which is a serious fire hazard btw -, and you're not using power off the motherboard PCIe slots, so you can use whatever motherboard you want, and not just the specialty flavors. In both aspects, it is much better (and safer) to have all power drawn straight off the PSU. Motherboards with extra PCIe power are a waste in my mind, since you cannot fill-up all PCIe slots without using risers. And as soon as you need to use risers, go with powered ones, or go home.

Powered USB risers cost about the same as the cheap and dangerous flat-cable risers picured a few posts back. They power each card with a 4-pin MOLLEX or SATA adapter, not to the PCIe port, but to the goldfingers of the card, just like the motherboard slots.
They are more safe, and the USB cable is more flexible. --scryptr
P.S. SP_ release dot 70 mines Neoscrypt at 340kh/s on my GTX 960, rather than 330-335kh/s with release dot 69. However, a very brief attempt at solo-mining failed. I'll try again later. --scryptr
curious......on the usb side, what would be the results of me adding one of those hubs and tring to run 8 GPUs off pcie ? PCIe DAUGHTER HUB/SPLITTER-- I've been asked this before, if we are talking about the same thing. I purchased a 1 PCIe-to-4 PCIe board, it worked for GTX 500 series and below. I could not get it to work with GTX 700 series nor any AMD cards. There is a picture of one of the boards several pages back. However, a simple USB hub would not work, the circutry could not handle the information from multiple cards on one line. --scryptr I found one that is powered 1 to 4 splitter and I think I posted it in the cuda thread. djm and I talked about it and found the technology would be a pain to work out or maybe it was to expensive at the time for a simple 750ti rig. Maybe for the higher end cards it will be worth it. I'll see if I can find it.

I am no expert in this psu/riser stuff but I read that when using the daisy chain power molex connectors to never use more than 2 connecting for power.
Something about they are not designed to have a lot of power running through them.

What i use on all my rigs. I use H81 boards in all the rigs but not using the extra voltage inputs on the mobo. Just powered USB raisers split up on two separate rails from the psu. Overkill but also bulletproof = good night sleep I have pretty much the exact same config. I am no expert in this psu/riser stuff but I read that when using the daisy chain power molex connectors to never use more than 2 connecting for power.
Something about they are not designed to have a lot of power running through them.
I put 2 cards max per chain on both molex and sata even if I have to use those cheap converters. With 3 cards on a chain mining something power hungry I noticed the chain heated up quite a bit with unpowered cards.

No luck. In windows it gets detected... all pcie ports shows in the device manager but not the gpus. Tried also in linux on 2 different mobo but no luck. I got a refund. Another thing i tried is to connect 3 gpus(maxwell) to an asrock q1900 mobo. It can work only with 2 gpus. No matter about slot number or gpu combination... Only 2 works at the same time in Win or linux enviroment. Then I purchased an asrock h81 pro btc and it is great. Not only for mining. I got a 2nd hand unused for 35EUR +celereon for 30EUR... btw I would never use an oldschool ribbon riser... I just love all the advantages usb riser offers. I hope sp won't be angry for the offtopic

I think is is possible to optimize here, but the kernal will use more power. But djm34 is the expert on the memory algos, hopefully he will release is private miner some time in the future. (lyra2v2 15-16MHASH on the gtx980)

Thanks for testing the watt usage. The GV-N970WF3OC is a great card, but it use too much power to mine.. A low profile card with 2 6pins connectors is only using 150-180W mining quark. But the hashrate is not 18MHASH, more like 15,5. So the last 2,5 MHASH is with a cost of 40WATT.
