1182  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Mar 2024] Fees are lower, wait for opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs on: March 30, 2024, 10:13:25 AM
I noticed this address: someone is consolidating many transactions with 1088 inputs (I guess to reach the maximum transaction size of 99.9 kB). Many of the inputs are very close to the same amount (0.00047477, 0.00047478, 0.00047479, 0.00047480, 0.00047481, ....). It looks like they're consolidating them starting from the largest inputs, and working their way down. At 11,549 transactions, it may have been millions of inputs already. They all have one large bc1-output, and all transactions send 1000 sats to an address starting with 3. I first thought that may be so they can use CPFP later, but RBF makes more sense. Why create dust while consolidating?

As far as I know, this isn't allowed:

Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page.
I assume the same applies to links in signatures. The links on the forum should direct to a landing page without (half) naked women.

1185  Other / Meta / Re: What do you think if Bitcointalk accepted videos? on: March 30, 2024, 09:36:08 AM
I don't want embedded videos. If there's a video link, I'll open it in an external window, and either play it on the side, or full screen. Many other sites that have embedded videos don't work for me, because I don't allow the tracking cookies. I'm okay without working embedded videos.
It gets worse if it's animating by default. My browser is set to animate GIFs only once, and ads are blocked. Whenever I visit a website without those default settings, I'm instantly surprised and annoyed by the amount of animations on my screen. I like a "quiet" screen, and anything that moves distracts.

I prefer the embedded videos to be from a platform that doesn't force users to view an ad or two [YouTube (e.g. standard videos) is a perfect example of a platform that should be avoided].
I refuse to watch ads, and the day my adblocker doesn't block them anymore is the day I stop using Youtube.

I sometimes wish to communicate here using a voice note, especially when I do not want to type much.
I hate voice messages with a passion. Suddenly it goes from a screen to sound that goes all around me.

I think that such a feature should somehow be limited to at least the Member+ rank, because there should be no doubt that otherwise there will be those who will abuse such a feature.
How about limiting it to only certain boards? Or even just one, so the rest of the forum stays nice and quiet.

There's another thing I hate about "video tutorials": whenever I need something, the first thing Google shows me is a bunch of Youtube videos. To find what I need, I need to watch some guy film himself, tell me to subscribe, bla bla bla bla bla and finally (if I'm lucky) I get to see what I needed. I miss the days when a "Howto" was just written text with images, so I can quickly scroll through it to find what i need. Video is very time consuming.
1186  Other / Meta / Re: Alts vs farm. on: March 30, 2024, 07:50:36 AM
Originally theymos' quote was referring to that, for example, if you want to express your political ideas and you don't want to do it with your account.
I wasn't around in 2012, but I guess farming accounts for selling or signatures wasn't a thing back then.

Quote
I don't remember anyone getting caught with two or more undeclared alts and not breaking the rules in some way.
"Getting caught" implies you did something bad. If someone finds your alt (or any other personal information about you), and you're not doing anything wrong, there's no reason to expose your alts.
1187  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Greenaddress: Bitcoins lost when transferring wallets from old phone to new one on: March 30, 2024, 07:46:21 AM
A transfer appears to have been made at the time the smart switch was running
I never use "transfer software" like this when I get a new phone, but it sounds like the transfer software had access to your wallet files. A PIN is easy to brute-force, so if the transfer software contains malware, it could steal anything it wants. That also means you should consider your new phone compromised now.
1188  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Initial Blockchain sync on: March 29, 2024, 07:30:14 PM
Read this thread on Github. The suggestions are to check hardware: memtest, CPU and disk temperature. Any chance your fans are dusty? If it's not hardware, that leaves software. Try if a different OS helps.
1189  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Initial Blockchain sync on: March 29, 2024, 06:49:18 PM
Falal LevelDB error: Corruption: block checksum mismatch.

I have a brand new 500G ssd which is showing no errors so its not likely hardware.
Have you checked the SMART? Chances are you have either a disk or a memory problem. Bitcoin Core's initial sync is quite demanding for your hardware.

1191  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos I need a larger sMerit quota on: March 29, 2024, 01:30:46 PM
I always try to refrain from sending merit to people who don't need it, even if their post is good.
I think this could be a reason to ask for a larger sMerit quota. If you're already sending less to posts that deserve it, those high ranking users can't trickle it down either.
1192  Economy / Reputation / Re: [self-moderated] Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source on: March 29, 2024, 10:49:41 AM
Hello LoyceV I don't have this idea you review post history as well, maybe it might skip my memory so I decided to utilize the chance you posted on that topic to report some of my post as you said.

If you need/want 50 Merit, just make a good post and make me or other Merit sources see it.
You and I have different definitions of good posts. I tried all 6 posts, but couldn't get past the first 2 lines.
1193  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Using an USB stick to store the blockchain. on: March 29, 2024, 10:30:59 AM
And I can tell you that during the last ~3 years my HDD got corrupted twice (and interestingly, it seems it was during shutdown/restart, not when power went down suddenly), last time I had to re-format the drive (and no bad sectors found).
I've had my fair share of problems with USB connections. Sometimes a small push to the cable makes it disconnect, which leads to file corruption. It hasn't happened with all cables, so it must be a quality thing.
1194  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Using an USB stick to store the blockchain. on: March 29, 2024, 10:20:01 AM
I had a look at Electrum, and it would seem I need to do some serious reading.
Have you never used it? There's not much to read, just download it from the official website electrum.org (there are phishing sites out there), install it, create a new wallet, safely write down the seed phrase, set a password and you're done. If you want to be thorough: create a new wallet, and restore the seed phrase to confirm it produces the same addresses.
1195  Other / Meta / Re: [Theymos] To reduce tension from adding more merits source on: March 29, 2024, 09:02:08 AM
Read A Quick Guide to Punctuation. Even better if you read back your own text before posting. That's step 1 towards earning more Merit.
Haven seen what you shared makes me to understand how you do justify post qualities
You're misinterpreting my post. Proper punctuation doesn't make a quality post, but it helps in wanting to read it. If you just post a wall of text that's not nice to read, I won't read it. There's far too much data on the internet to waste time on bad writers. I just checked your Merit history, and I've never sent you anything. I recognize your nickname, and you're not on my Ignore list. I've Merited 3050 unique users and I'm always trying to get rid of sMerits so I'm not very picky.
1196  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Using an USB stick to store the blockchain. on: March 29, 2024, 08:51:49 AM
I really started this thread, as I hoped to run another wallet on my netbook, and that has really limited upgrade potential. I'm running Ubuntu on that. The drive is due to arrive on Tuesday, so I'll start a new thread about running a node on the upgraded notebook.
Does it have enough RAM? At the moment, I consider 8 GB to be the absolute minimum to comfortably run Bitcoin Core. It can be done with less, but at the cost of very heavy disk activity. More is better Smiley

Quote
I'm doing this as part of my inchoate project to help vanlifers with limited resources.  In theory Bitcoin should be a significant asset and savings medium for them.
Why not just go for Electrum (on Tor)? Light wallets were designed for situations with limited resources.
1197  Other / Meta / Re: Alts vs farm. on: March 29, 2024, 08:35:03 AM
Yet they are scared of giving explicit answers for number 2 and 3.
I'll answer:
  • It is allowed to own alts.
  • How many alts will one own and it will become a farm?
  • Is farm accounts without merit sharing, cheating campaigns or contests allowed?
2. The word "farm" is used for people who rank up many accounts for earning money. I don't think there's a hard limit: 2 accounts isn't a farm, 20 is. Somewhere in between is a gray area. It was a much bigger problem before the introduction of the Merit system, when shitposting in Off-topic was enough to reach Legendary status.
3. Yes. From the forum rules' perspective, I've never seen anyone banned just for owning many accounts. But if one of them gets banned, the rest is guilty of ban evasion. Scams aren't moderated, so Merit sharing and cheating won't get you banned. You could say it's "allowed" from the forum's perspective. But that's where the "alt farm hunters" come in with the red tags.

Having alts on this forum is not the problem here the problem is having alts and hiding it.
Allow me to (again) quote theymos on this:
I don't have a problem with alt accounts as long as they're not used for evading bans. If you're hesitant to say something controversial because you don't want it to be associated with your name, please create an alt account and say it.

LoyceV has five or six alts in total - the majority of which are bots and he's also confessed he forgot he had an obscure bot alt at one point.
I've used "throw away accounts" just to test something. Create, test, forget. Or this one:
I created TrustTestUser to aid in creating screenshots and links. Please don't consider this as leaving positive feedback to my alt, I don't intend to use this account for anything else.
I don't think anyone considers this an alt account, let alone a farm.
1198  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos I need a larger sMerit quota on: March 29, 2024, 08:23:29 AM
It's kinda hard to enforce a rule to make people receive and send a transaction inside Bitcoin Core. Let's say everyone sent some bitcoins to their own wallets. But then those transactions will be in the newest block so their nodes would have to sync anyway before they could spend it.
It would be a nice addition to do after syncing the node.

Quote
And on top of that there is no way to prove which transaction belongs to who
You're currently asking for screenshots, which can just as easily be faked or bought.

This made me realize another "problem": I bet many of the users who took your 14 day node challenge have never even used Bitcoin from their own wallet. That could be another challenge for Newbies, instead of using centralized exchanges to store Bitcoin. But withdrawal fees are ridiculous for many exchanges.

One of the reasons I followed that topic, was because I hoped I could dump some Merit there. But it didn't feel right. I'd say lower the Merit amounts there, most of the posts aren't worth reading.
I will say we shouldn't be over critical of a contest, or try to suggest what others do with their smerits.
I was considering my own sMerits Wink It still feels like a burden to get rid of them.
1199  Economy / Services / Re: LoyceV's Bitcoin Fork claiming guide (and service) on: March 29, 2024, 07:24:54 AM
2. This gets sent to... my original addresses? An unused address in my existing wallet?
Dusting the original legacy address is the easiest way, so it also works when you import the private key. But it could be a different address, as long as you include the input.

Quote
3. Sync Bitcoin Cash Node once dust has verified on blockchain. Take offline.
4. dumpwallet in my original offline BTC wallet
Since you're using the full node, you could probably just load the wallet.dat and do a rescan.

Sounds good to me. Disclaimer: I haven't verified the URLs, up to you to find the correct one for the real Fork wallet.
1200  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Using an USB stick to store the blockchain. on: March 28, 2024, 03:07:40 PM
It continued to run without fault for a day or so, but it is now giving intermittent core errors that shut down bitcoin core.
What errors?

Quote
Prior to switching to the USB stick, I performed a full format, and checked for errors. All seemed to be perfect, as one would expect from a Sandisk product.
Can you check the stick for errors again? Are you sure it's a real one? I've seen countless fake USB sticks.

Quote
I have come to the conclusion that it is not viable to use a USB link for the blockchain, could anyone verify that this is so please?
I see no reason why it couldn't work. After all, it's just data. But: I wouldn't put chainstate on the USB stick, it writes far too much and will quickly wear out the stick.
I would create a normal .bitcoin directory in your home directory, and from there symlink blocks to the external device.
