It is known as 'Cooling the mark' and the purpose is to make your victims believe that you might return with their money. It allows them to reduce the likelihood of their 'marks' pursuing them or making trouble for them and, if enough idiots can be conned into sending money in while they are [insert excuse for 'investment' system not functioning], it still brings a bit of extra cash in for them.

Which is why I said that people stating their participation to the ponzi while not promoting it shouldn't get punished for it. Firstly, if people delete their post after learning of the implications of their participation in a ponzi thread I will generally delete the rating, so no harm done. Secondly, and this is the important part, there is no point in posting of your participation in a ponzi other than to bolster its image and draw more participants in, so you don't end up being the mug who doesn't get paid. The *whole* point of posting of participation in a ponzi thread is so somebody else will be the mug who doesn't get paid. That is demonstrably the behaviour of a person who is not trustworthy. |
