1782  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is it profitable to mine? on: June 20, 2014, 04:20:47 AM
I jumped into mining with a purchase of a $15 AntMiner USB chip.  I'm not and never had any belief I'd make much of a profit on it, it was mostly for learning.  But I'm wondering if it's even possible to make any profit.

I'm currently getting 1.75 GHash/Sec.  From what I have received over the past few hours, as well as projects from various web sites, the lifetime earnings of this will be about $5.  That's earnings, not profit.  Cost+shipping will be about a $25 loss).  That's assuming BTC price remains stable, I'm not using any electricity, and a few other factors in favor of some kind of a profit.

If that projection is accurate, than if I were to get a 1 THash unit at about $2,100 then I might expect a lifetime earnings of $2,800 or so.  Again, assuming BTC price is stable and not factoring in expenses like electricity, time spent working with the unit, etc.

Is this about  right? Has mining become such a commodity right now that you might hope to recoup only a few percentage profit over time on a capital investment?

Short answer is yup...welcome to the world of mining.  Cloud mining seems to be where it's at right now and even most of those major operations are in trouble.  Basically only people designing/producing asics are making any real money in that space.  You don't really mine for profit anymore.
1783  Economy / Economics / Re: Why the fuck do we still use cash? on: June 20, 2014, 04:18:00 AM
why use cash?  i try not too but it's just so dang convenient.  perhaps in another 15-20 years (hopefully sooner) there will be so many crypto-currencies for so many different things and accepted by everybody.

The firmer they tighten their grasp the more satoshi's will slip through their fingers.

Mostly on the sly I imagine.

Sounds like yet another asset (cloud) is leaving CS.  This is making me a bit nervous.  Glad they at least asked for disclosure of shares.  If you guys haven't disclosed this stuff I would recommend doing it.  Plan on doing so for whatever other few shares I have as well and contacting each in turn to make sure they have a backup plan for scenario in which CS goes away.

Looking forward to helping spread the word about primedice.   Plan on throwing a small part of my booty towards PD just to see what kinda luck these satoshi's hold Wink

1789  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-06-19] CNBC: House for sale. Asking price: 2,826 bitcoins on: June 19, 2014, 06:00:09 PM
Nice article.  Would like to see this kind of thing "filter down" to the types of houses that the common man (thats me) can actually afford.  At this point it's basically just big btc bag holders rubbing shoulders with the wealthy elite.  Eventually I suspect we will start seeing more and more houses going up for sale accepting at least partial payment in bitcoin for reasonably priced homes.

Very cool nonetheless.

You should have read the TOS before buying, nothing to do now.
I took a moment to quickly scan over Alpha-T based ToS before placing an e-mail asking for further instructions on requesting a refund for my order.  It does state that only 25% of deposit (minus refund fee's) will be refunded.  Highway satoshi-robbery if you ask me.
1791  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: X-Post: Amazon Preparing for Bitcoin Integration According to Patent Award on: June 19, 2014, 05:10:41 AM
I suspect that they are only starting with BTC payment option on AWS services.  Once it's rolled out and the bugs are hammered out I suspect that most if not all of remaining Amazon-related offerings will soon follow.
1792  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Marshall's auction.... It's a trap !!! on: June 19, 2014, 05:08:12 AM
For some reason...reading this thread reminded me of a sting operation I heard of once where the Fed's basically contacted hundreds of fugitives with outstanding warrants and convinced a good number of them that they had won some kind of lottery or something.  Once the suckers came in to collect their prize-money they slapped the cuffs on em.

Very interesting interview.  So once we start terra-forming Mars and beyond we can then eliminate mother earth as a single point of failure for the network Tongue
