181  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: March 11, 2015, 04:14:03 PM
Gold really collapsing. Bitcoin UP.

Are you sure? Because losing 5% in one month is not what I call collapsing.

Well, given I made this post on 8/9/11, Gold: I Smell a Trap, I think I've earned the right to say "yeah, I'm sure".

Well, will you look at that. Nice timing. Do you still hold a single ounce of gold or are you 100% BTC in the BTC/GLD pair?

Sold all the silver and most of the gold. Still retain 2 sleeves of gold coins but that's it. Bitcoin is the future.

I keep offering to sell those 2 sleeves to all the gold bugs who stop by every once in a while claiming they're worth $30000/oz for a mere $15000/oz but not a one of them take me up on the deal.

Haha Wink

I am pretty much in the same situation. I sold most of my gold in early 2013 but rebought some in mid 2014.

Gold is still very nice to balance a portfolio of Stocks and Bonds, unlike BTC it is directly negatively correlated to those.

Actually that negative correlation is now changing to positive correlation as we enter deflation. Go back and look at the charts of the brief deflationary 2008-9. Gold and gold stocks dropped significantly along with stocks and non UST bonds. This time that correlated drop should be even greater. And gold is leading.

You are absolutely right and I took that apparent change into account when I bought the gold. But as I was going for an 10y+ investment and I still think in that timeframe it will work as a buffer on swings.

Only time will tell, but even if it is positively correlated it won't hurt me too much.

Atleast you have the knowledge that his account is now worthless due to the negative feedback.
This is true lol, I just wish he would give it back.... end this nightmare  Smiley

You could always buy it from him. (I guess)

Negative feedback can be removed.

Sure but usually stolen accounts end up keeping it.

Take my neg feedback I have. I'm glad its there. People will now do what I've been doing since I started bitcoins. It don't bother me none the least. But usually if you message who left it, and you can prove that its your account and something happened, they usually remove it. Not all the time I know, but usually.

Fair enough.
186  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfenix Verification? Why do they need so much personal info? on: March 11, 2015, 03:32:02 PM
Don't use them if you don't want to provide all that info. There are plenty of other exchanges available though most legit/legal ones will require you to submit documents to comply with anti-money laundering laws etc.

I think BTC-e is not requesting any infos, though the banks that work with them might.

Oh wow. I didn't know that. But this seems to be only locally because pretty much everyone in europe is still doing it.

There are too few alternatives today to really enforce such a law anyway imo.

well, thats true.
but i'll try and until now it works.

IMHO with PostIdent there is a very good alternative (essentially you are going to a post office showing them your id and they tell the company "yes, its him"). it works even with online banks (and is legally compliant).

Is there even one site that offers post ident?
190  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase. :-( on: March 11, 2015, 03:24:01 PM
I would think they operate on a partial reserve system, similar to the way banks do. You have a balance that they essentially take liberties with.  When you buy low, they bank on others selling, but nobody sells then the price rises. They don't have the bitcoins to actually deliver to you so they cancel your order and refund your purchase price because it's cheaper than buying at the higher price to cover your order.

If this is really what's happening it will take a while, but they'll get nailed for doing this and folks who had orders canceled as a result of unscrupulous business practices will have a claim against them. Unless of course they have covered their bases with solid legal terms and conditions, which allow them to cancel an order for any reason, and they likely do. Even so, this would not be enough to protect them in the court of public opinion, and folks like the OP may be able to seek compensation for losses.

I've heard about this several times, and it's happened to me too, but I've never heard it happen when someone bought at a high price, then breathed a sigh of relief because the price fell and their order was canceled, allowing them to buy lower.

TT

There is no reason to do this. They have very good connections to get and sell BTC too. Also why would they have periods where they stop selling or buying if it was like you are saying? Doesn't make any sense...
191  Economy / Speculation / Re: I have USD 2000 to invest. Should I buy Bitcoins or gold? on: March 11, 2015, 03:18:38 PM

But to be honest, a 1 year time horizon sucks for any investment vehicle. You'll get smacked by short term volatility.

Very good post. Also I would even go that far as to say a 1 year period doesn't count as "investment". Alteast not if its something with volatility. A 1 year bond is a different story though.

Wow, I just checked the SWAP rates and they spiked really nicely. This might indicate some burst out. Looking forward to it!

As expected, the AUD is devaluating very hard. This is the only reason that such high interest rates are possible.

http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=AUDUSD%3DX+Interactive#{%22range%22%3A%225y%22%2C%22scale%22%3A%22linear%22}

That chart shows deflation, rather than inflation (devaluation). It says it's AUS->USD, and that it went from 1.1 to 0.7. This means whereas it used to cost $1.1 AUS = $1 USD, now it only takes about half that. This means it would have deflated by 50% (meaning $AUS is actually worth twice as much as it was before, relative to USD).

i.e., in 2012, if I had $1000, I could buy $1100 in stuff in Australia. Now, with $1000, I can only buy $700 in stuff there with the same USD. So the value of $AUS has gone up, the value of USD has gone down.

For your statement to ring true, it would have to go in the opposite direction (in that it would take MORE $AUS to equal the same USD).
No lol audusd going down is not deflationary.. Infact aus central bank has been complaining deflation was an issue as aud rose above parity.. And that they would sell if market doesnt correct.. And now its falling on its own.. Usd is deflationary right now.
In 2012 with $1000 u can buy $900 aud worth of stuff.. And now $1200 aud worth at 0.8

If $1 USD is only worth $0.77 AUS, and last year $1 USD was worth $1.1 AUS, how is USD going up in value? That makes absolutely no sense.

Sorry, but you are dead wrong.

Please don't say "reading charts is not so hard" if you fail to do so yourself Wink

This instability however can be shown to be profitible but also shows the currency has many bubbles. Increasing by thousands of times itself, and then collapsing months later shows its a good gamble but not very good long term investment.

Actually investments with high variance are good longterm investments, but usually bad short to midterm investments.

Pretty sure you are wrong. it is an AUD/USD chart. You read it like and USD/AUD chart --> http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=AUD%3DX+Interactive#{%22range%22%3A%225y%22%2C%22scale%22%3A%22linear%22}

Ok I am going through 2 years of my PMs. to and from MinermanNC I have never done this before.  Shocked

Its a hero account, so it might be worth it for you though.

If I had to guess, I'd guess China. China has a LOT of people. Chinese people are all over these boards!

That might be true, but there is no way that many of them will come to this thread Wink

Send a signed message from an address that is/was associated with that account to Theymos.

if you can't prove ownership of an address associated, don't even try it, you will just waste your time and the teams time.
Hey thank you for trying to help me. I am a bit confused when you say a signed message? My hacked account shows the last login on it at 2:03 pm today. and my email address is hidden I assume by whom ever hacked me. I do have personal messages PM's in my associated Hotmail account, too my and from my BCT account that got hacked. I could some how forward that or something else to prove who I am. ok, Please clarify what I should send him.
THX
To sign a message: follow the instructions followed in this blog post. You will need to sign a message from an address that you previously posted (or sent a pm with) with your account

Ok, going to work on it now. In looking at my hacked MinermanNC account it appears they have removed my BTC address that was associated with it, along with my email that wasn't hidden before hack,,, they sure seem to be trying to stop me from recovering it,, geez

They can't delete PMs, just go through your emails and search for a PM where you sent an address to someone else. Then contact that person to send you the PM number.

i feel like bitcoin mixing is a beautiful word for money laundering. it certainly looks and feels like it though. which is absolutely illegal everywhere.

If you reuse your addresses often this could greatly increase anonymity. I'll agree on the point of it generally being used for laundering and theft.

I think you meant to say 'decrease' anonymity Smiley

No doubt mixers are used for laundering etc but I don't think we should associate them all with criminality.

It's increase, is it not?
Unfortunately it's the sad truth that we have to associate bitcoin and mixers with criminals. It's something that occurs naturally now.

I don't think it is associated in such a way. Most people have simply never heard of it and would not be able to explain what it is originally for.

However once they hear the term mixer and money In the conversation, they're usually going to ask something along the lines of "is it legal?"

Indeed. Mixing money sounds like washing/laundering money...
