Great spirits here. I don't usually start drinking in the morning but today mi amigo dropped by with a dozen Cerveza Bohemia Clara (4.7% abv vs. 4.9% for Bohemia Oscura). Yummy. Maintained 2 meter distancing. Beer has a way of finding its way through, even during an emergency.

Cinco de Mayo? Nobody GAF around here. It's mainly una fiesta Americana, although it is celebrated in Puebla, where the battle against the French occurred that it commemorates. In the rest of Mexico it's a non-event.

Makes me want to get some shitty tourist beer in clear bottles and maybe some Old El Paso brand processed junk food and sing Cielito Lindo and La Cucaracha.

I had to jump through hoops to get a 5.24" floppy connected to my TRS-80 CoCo... a massive 3rd-party 512 KB external memory upgrade, a FDD controller unit from a different 3rd party, and the drive itself which weighed more than the computer.

It let me install OS-9 (6809) and run Deskmate with a GUI. I used a joystick instead of a mouse though.  Those were the days.

As for attempting data recovery from HDDs, I'll stick to my SSDs and most importantly, backups. Never had an SSD fail and I've been using them since the days of PATA. It's hard to recover data from a HDD head crash.

I'll confess to a little hyperbole.  

If you don't move your HDDs, mount them with rubber grommets and use an UPS, they should last a long time. You're lucky to have avoided failure that long though. Of course thorough backups are a must but some sort of redundancy is a good idea... RAID-5?

The days of RAID-0 are long gone. Speaking of HDD failure, my first RAID-0 array was 4 IBM 75GXP "Deathstars". I was so proud of my blazing fast third-of-a-terabyte C: drive until I started reading stories about those HDDs failing left and right. Never did have one fail though until I replaced the array with Raptors. Ended up using the IBMs to upgrade other people's old machines with <10GB HDDs. Never heard of one of them failing either.

Once I replaced my Raptors with Vertex, I never looked back. Pissed me off to have the array bottlenecked by the southbridge but soon fixed that with a PCIe RAID card. Next step was the OCZ PCIe Revodrive series and now of course it's NVMe.

Gotta move with the times.

Still have a drawer full of old HDDs in the 100GB-4TB range but they're pretty much just archives and backup. Now I have a couple of 2TB SSDs for onboard data storage (besides the C: drive) in my main PC and a few more in external enclosures in my laptop bag. Every now and then I haul out the old HDDs and copy over a few terabytes of movies onto the externals. That's the big problem now... how long it takes to copy multiple terabytes via USB3. eSATA ain't much better.

P.S. All this talk of storage has me thinking that we all owe a little thanks to Joe Breher for his work in making these storage technologies possible.  Many people here see him as an argumentative pro-BSV "troll". He's a lot more than that.

Do you also use vacuum tubes (Eccles-Jordan bistable multivibrator circuitry) and revolving drum memory?

SSDs have been around for over 40 years, mainstream for 20, consumer/retail for well over a decade.

I concede that mechanical HDDs have some archival value but they're so slow and so fragile.

I guess they're cheap though. You get what you pay for.

Had to sell a coin today to take care of business in Toronto. I always hate to sell any Bitcoin but I got $8.85kUSD. That's a lot better than a half a week ago and almost $100 more than now so I can't bitch.

That's the beauty of Bitcoin. It's not about buying consumer crap. It's about sending decent amounts of money internationally cheaply, safely, and quickly. Sitting in the Mexican jungle taking care of business in Toronto during a pandemic lockdown.

What a ride... up by almost 2 grand, followed by a correction/profit-taking of about about a grand, and leveling out in the $88xx range... currently $8857USD/$12301CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Looks like the $7xxx range is done for good and the battle for Vegeta has just begun.

One good thing about tarders is that they're the rubes who keep the exchanges profitable.

Without the online exchanges it would be difficult to assign a fiat value to Bitcoin to use for OTC exchanges and international Bitcoin transfers. Remember when the only dollar value was 10k coins for a $25 pair of Papa Johns? It was Mtgox who actually established a dollar value for each bitcoin.

While I was never a daytarder, I was a sucker who helped line P.T. Barnum's Mark Karpeles' pockets, eventually to the tune of 50btc. If it wasn't for marks like me we wouldn't have accurate Bitcoin/fiat indexes (like the one I quote in my morning greetings) that allow us to buy and sell bitcoins off-exchange at accurate market prices.

That's a choice we all have to make.

Everybody except Bitcoin holders. The rich actually get richer during economic down times.

The grandfather of one of my friends was a broke halfbreed riding the rods (hobo) early in the Great Depression. A distillery tycoon's daughter fell in love with him and married him. His father-in-law lent him half a million dollars interest-free and within half a year had paid him back in full and within a couple of years he was a multi-millionaire with a successful stock brokerage.

He bought up foreclosures and preyed on the over-leveraged because he had the capital.

In tough economic times, what capital could be better than Bitcoin?
