1981  Economy / Speculation / Re: Poll: What will be the high price of Bitcoin in 2015? on: January 01, 2015, 08:38:03 PM
A little history is in order here. The low in 2012 was close to 4 USD. The high in 2013 was approximately 300x  that amount. So 50000+ USD is actually well within the realm of possibilities here.
1982  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 29, 2014, 09:35:26 PM
I would urge everyone to limit their holdings.  Excessive concentration of ownership will damage the upside.  At some point, if you own too much, it will be worth less than if you owned a lesser amount.  Set a modest target.  Once it is reached, invest your time and money into building the technology, the economy, and public awareness, rather than in owning more of the supply.  It will pay you back better.

An interesting statistic is the ratio of 24 hour volume to market cap. It is an indicator on how tightly a coin is held. Monero actually does very well in this area indicating a very high level of market liquidity compared to market cap. Dodgecoin and Litecoin do well while Ripple on the other hand does poorly. The data below is a recent snapshot from http://coinmarketcap.com/ sorted by the ratio of Volume(24h)/Market Cap for the top 20 coins / assets.

1983  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Retina Scan Or Thumb Print Authorisation on: December 29, 2014, 05:46:32 AM
You can always lose your password, most people don't lose their thumb or eyes.

Actually some people do lose their thumb or eyes. One can just write the password on the outside of the phone in order to not lose it. This is the essence of the CCC hack over a year ago. http://www.ccc.de/en/updates/2013/ccc-breaks-apple-touchid. Yes Apple is that reckless when it comes to the security of their customer's information.

Um... Ok. Then show me statistics of how many people in the world lose both their eyes and thumbs, I'm assuming not much? If it's not much, I think you're proving a good point for this type of security. Someone had to recreate someone's thumb! That's a hell of a lot harder to do than stealing someone's credit card or being apart of other illegal schemes.

Amputations account for 1% of workplace injuries in BC, Canada http://worksafebc.com/publications/reports/statistics_reports/assets/pdf/stats2012.pdf p 118. So it is very significant. The point is that the fingerprints are lifted from the outside of the phone. So if the attacker has possession of the phone she can overcome the Apple security theatre. The amount at stake here can be many orders of magnitude more that a stolen credit card where there is consumer has limited liability typically under 50 USD.

Seriously this kind of security theatre is very dangerous because it give people a false sense of security.

Those who wish to become isheep and play in Apple's gilded jail are of course free to do so. I will stick to proven Free Libre Open Source Software security technology that actually works, rather than corporate security theatre.

In the US, you have Coinbase monitoring your transactions and cancelling accounts if you spend BTC at a gambling site, buy cannabis seeds, or do whatever is deemed unacceptable by the gov.

Is this true? If it is, are they just monitoring transactions out of Coinbase (Coinbase->dice) or further (Coinbase->wallet->dice)?

I can confirm with 100% certainly they monitor what you are doing and ask questions not just transactions out but also transactions in.

I don't know specifically what blockchain analysis they are doing, how far down the chain it goes, etc.

There are reports (which I can't confirm) of false positives on allegedly suspicious BTC activity which suggest they are looking more than one hop.

Ok, that should certainly be very good for XMR. There's something very wrong and evil in Coinbase's actions...two or three years ago, no one would have believed there will be something like this in the future. Sometimes I don't like the way bitcoin is developing.

Another angle on this is Operation Choke Point in the US. http://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Staff-Report-FDIC-and-Operation-Choke-Point-12-8-2014.pdf. Basically certain industries are being targeted for the denial of financial services by officials in the FIDC and the Department of Justice.
Quote
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the primary federal regulator of over 4,500 banks, targeted legal industries. FDIC equated legitimate and regulated activities such as coin dealers and firearms and ammunition sales with inherently pernicious or patently illegal activities such as Ponzi schemes, debt consolidation scams, and drug paraphernalia.
Coinbase's actions are hardly surprising in this context. The opportunity this creates for crypto currency in general and XMR in particular becomes clear when one understands the power of the gun lobby in the United States for example.

Edit: Here is an interesting video on the subject. http://overlawyered.com/2014/12/operation-choke-point-hits-ammunition-company-maryland/

Fingerprint scanners to secure a phone have to be one of the dumbest ideas yet. Why because the fingerprints of the user are already on the outside of the phone! Apple's IOS fingerprint "security" has already been hacked repeatedly. http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/iphone-6-touch-id-fingerprint-scanner-hacked-days-after-launch-1466843.

These kind of biometrics can work where the actual scanning is supervised, for example when crossing a border, entering a secure area etc. When the scanning is not supervised they are next to useless.

As for Apple, I would stay well away from that company when dealing with XBT or other crypto currencies. I still remember purchasing XBT in 2012 and late 2011 between 2 and 6 USD per XBT. The loyal isheep had to wait for approval from their masters at Apple in 2014 and pay between 275 and 600 USD per XBT. When the loyal isheep have to pay 100x for an asset, any asset, over the price those of us, who recognize the evil of the DRM infected Apple ecosystem pay, it is hardly surprising why Apple keeps accumulating USD while the isheep get deeper and deeper into debt.

passive privacy system > any mixing system.

Why?

Because an active privacy system is subject to regulation.
1989  Economy / Speculation / Re: Warren Buffet advise not to buy bitcoin. Expect bitcoin price to collapse. on: December 26, 2014, 08:59:41 PM
Eventually 1 XBT will be worth more than 1 share of BRK.A. The more interesting question is will this happen while Warren Buffet is still alive?

Current prices 1 XBT 327.18 USD; 1 BRK.A 227,100.00 USD; Warren Buffet age 84; Life expectancy 84 year old male US 6.5 years http://www.ssa.gov/planners/lifeexpectancy.htm

I agree 0.002 should be a resistance point. It also coincides with the early June low. What the risk reward ratio of trying to trade this is remains to be seen.
1991  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Theoretically, is a Bitcoin Credit Card possible? on: December 25, 2014, 11:01:02 PM
There's a few popular exchanges that provide this already...haven't used an exchange in a while so I'm not sure which ones nor can I recommend any however this wouldn't be hard to find out.

When gold was the currency there were loans. Even fractional reserve loans.

Lender has 1 oz of gold. He issues a certificate to 10 different people in the amount of 1 oz of gold. People use those certificates as if they are money. At some point someone can claim their 1 oz of gold but they count on not many people doing so.

Bitcoin company issues a Bitcoin credit card, they have 1 BTC and offer 1 BTC worth of credit to 10 different people. The person uses his Bitcoin credit card wherever that credit card is accepted. The merchant then gets a "credit" for however many bitcoins were spent on their merchant account (just a value in the database). The merchant can withdraw their bitcoins or use their own Bitcoin credit card to make further purchases.

They rely on not everyone wanting to take their bitcoins out at once. Otherwise they are screwed, that is why a bank run was always such a big deal to banks...in Mary Poppins they gave a glimpse of what would happen if people wanted their money from the bank all at once.

When it comes to credit limits and whether people pay the bitcoins back, they would be subject to the same credit rating as other credit cards. If you're late, your credit score goes down.

One of the problems with this scenario is that it is way easier and way less expensive to take delivery of Bitcoin than to take delivery of an equivalent amount of gold.

Edit: As Trendon Shavers and Mark Karpeles found out.

Of course it's bullish but shhh don't jinx it. You're disturbing my buy orders.

It is bullish THAT it is not celebrated.

It is not celebrated because the previous bear market towards the end was driven in a significant way by greed (sell low hoping to buy lower) rather than fear.

1994  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Tax Loss Selling in Crypto - January Rally?? on: December 24, 2014, 12:55:58 AM
lol you are assuming crypto users pay taxes.

Of course, all crypto traders and everyone on this forum abides by their local jurisdictions and pays their taxes, don't they??  LOL Grin Grin Grin

My point is  -  buying for tax reasons, a house for example, isn't (or shouldn't be) a prime determining factor.

For most people, decisions on buying a house is usually predicated on location to job, family, or school or pride of ownership; then other secondary reasons, such as price (vs. renting), where tax issues are examined.

Buying or selling for tax reasons is almost always a bad idea because one is entering the market with the primary objective of loosing money. More often than not investors that enter the market with the objective of loosing money actually achieve their objective and loose money! This does not mean there are many fools who believe then can outwit "lady tax" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DoSQS8oUaQ and many pedallers of dubious investments that prey on them.

I do suspect tax selling has been a factor in the price of XBT at the end of this year and this has also impacted the price of many alt-coins.
1995  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 23, 2014, 07:06:03 PM
I just fulfilled my dream to reach a specific percentage of the current bitcoin supply, it took me just a little more than a year. Smiley
My next goal is to accumulate 0,1% of the current monero supply. For that, i will buy daily for 12$(that is everything i can afford  Roll Eyes). It's not much, and all you whales will make fun of me, but it adds up over time and I still really like the coin and the people who are involved in it. (and obviously the conversations in this topic)

Overall I think the current price is a great long term opportunity. Especially if you keep in mind the slowing inflation, the future development milestones and the need for anonymity.

First congratulations on meeting your XBT goal. Dollar cost averaging XMR in this fashion is a very good strategy since the short term volatility works very much in your favour. I really like the daily cost averaging. It is also obvious that you have done your homework here, the timing of this post gives that away.  Wink As for whales making fun of you because of the cost averaging amount, I very much doubt it, what is far more likely however is that you become a whale. Many whales got started with small amounts and not just in crypto-currency.

Yes this is very good news.
1997  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Tax Loss Selling in Crypto - January Rally?? on: December 23, 2014, 05:58:23 AM
Tax loss selling will tend to impact an asset that is trading at a loss during the year the most. XBT being a very good example in 2014. The idea is to sell at a loss and claim it for tax purposes, then wait the prescribed 30 days and then buy back the asset hopefully at a lower same price or even slightly higher. With crypto-currencies, particularly alt-coins this can be a very dangerous game, if the market turns before the 30 days are over.

A better strategy can be. 1) Buy during the tax loss season. 2) Sell a portion during the buying panic / short squeeze resulting in a substantial profit. 3) Pay the required tax. 4) Keep the rest of the asset at an effective zero or negative cost.
1998  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 22, 2014, 02:49:32 AM
The database is the critical one on the development side, since this allows Monero to run on most desktops/laptops. There is a reason why the devs made this a priority. The GUI will follow after the database.
1999  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 22, 2014, 02:24:24 AM
For starters the database and the GUI. NMC did not have a "database" issue. Then there is the issue of the 1MB block limit in XBT which can blow any time soon. Virtually every other coin has this issue but XMR does not. As for the emission curve even an MEW vote to finalize this issue could set it off. When the time comes the market will find an excuse.

I would think of the stock market in 1929 and turn the chart upside down. Bears can fall into the same greed trap as bulls by selling low hoping to buy lower. More recently consider the fate of pirateat40 and the bear raid on XBT he started in the fall of 2011. Greed not fear got to this bear.

For reference here is the chart for LTC all time http://www.cryptocoincharts.info/pair/ltc/btc/btc-e/alltime In the LTC case the trigger was a rise in the XBT/USD rate. In this case apart from a rise in the XBT/USD rate we have a host of other possible triggers.
