OMG This virus is spreading fast. It seems we all have it now. Last night it only had gotten to a few of us and its exclusivity made it a badge of honor. Now every Tom, Dick and Hairy seems to have it.

I think it's time to call in the professionals... Eugene Kaspersky, Peter Norton, John Mcafee, etal.

John might be a bit of a loose cannon but at least he's bullish about Bitcoin. Let's get him on this before he starts chowing down on his kielbasa.

Big pharma bla bla bla bla (conspiracy) bla bla bla no sorry, it's enough please

Big Pharma saved my life a few years ago.

I had hepatitis-C to the point that my AST levels (standard liver function blood test) were around 300. Normal healthy levels are about 20 and warning levels are around 40.

After some European academics discovered a way to culture hep-C virus in petri dishes, American Big Pharma was able to identify a protein required by the virus to replicate (but was of no use to us) and they devised a blocker.

Yes, American Big Pharma shamelessly profiteered to the point of price gouging. They justified their $95k price per patient (Harvoni) by saying it was less than the >$250k cost of keeping patients in the hospital until they died. I wonder if Gilead Sciences ever made a donation to the European Universities?

Luckily once the idea was out, good old capitalism kicked in. Soon you could fly to India on a Hep-C vacation to get cured for <$1.2k. Where there's a table to go under or a back door to go through, things will go under and through.

Soon other Big Pharma companies made their versions. My hepatologist used his influence as the head of the Liver Foundation of Canada to get Merck to supply me with their version (Zepatier) for free under the guise of "compassionate care" since I was over 65 years old. They even sent it right to my door by courier.

I took one large tablet every day for 90 days. It was like taking a vitamin pill, no side effects or anything. One-A-Day. After 30 days my AST levels were down to 20 (normal) and after the full 90 day treatment, comprehensive tests showed me to be clear of the virus. I was tested clear again after 3 more months and 3 months after that. I shook the doc's hand, thanked him, saying that I hoped we'd never meet again (at least not professionally!) and wished him a happy retirement.

Through the treatment I continued belting back way too many overpriced ballpark beers, bottles of Guinness at my local live music bar, and of course assorted yummy cocktails. Didn't miss a beat.

Big Pharma? Yep, they can be greedy heartless profiteering scum, but they can also be of use.
___

I keep wondering if they could use the same paradigm to develop blockers for proteins required by other viruses, Covid-19 for example.

Here's one for the conspiracy theorists. Maybe they already have and are waiting to produce and stockpile enough for their grand debut to maximize profits before governments have a chance to take over production or competitors move in. What are a few hundred thousand human lives when there's some profiteering to be done?

Disclaimer: I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I'm not a conspiracy denier either.

Well, in my household it's the parent me teaching the kid. But yeah, I do think there should be a semester on basic money management taught in public schools. And probably another semester on basic life skills that it seems many parents don't teach or don't even know themselves.

There's the rub.

Indeed the only way for kids to really learn is by the example their own parents set.

Unfortunately too many parents set the wrong example.

The cycle of abuse continues.

When you consider so many adults can't even do a basic budget then yes the idea of savings has to be taught in my opinion, even if only to emphasize its importance in the face of a never ending onslaught of a culture that demands us to spend.

Who's going to teach them? Schools? LOL.

People are trained by media propaganda, both the MSM and (anti-) "Social" Media.

Nobody's going to fork over the dineros to pay for "save don't spend" commercials. Sorry, retail "savings" products from banks don't count.

As for Insta-Face-Tube, stupidity and misinformation are so rampant that quality control is almost impossible. No sense trying to learn from the already brainwashed.

I guess it's inevitable. There will always be suckers, bread&circuses, and a peasant class, and there will always be a minority who can see beyond. Suckers may be born every minute but showmen much less often.

I know two PhD grads in their early 30's that married last year, and have a newborn baby this year.

They have virtually no savings and both have student loan debt up the whazzu. They both have expensive car loans. They just bought a house end of last year that's WAAYYY over their paygrade. (House is ~$400K, they barely put down 10% and they both have to work $70K jobs each just to afford it).

And guess what...the Einstein dad just got laid off.

This is how the "smart" people in America are planning their lives.  Roll Eyes

I forgot that when I was listing the the various brainwashing results... the diploma and associated student loan.

Glad I figured that one out early. I've officially only got a grade 12 education but I've learned a lot more by actually living than most diploma holders do in years of expensive "education".

I realized early (about grade 4 or 5) that teachers were just overpaid babysitters. I didn't trust what they told me after hearing them lie to my classmates. I saw that they worked from the teachers' version of the same textbooks they gave us. I figured I'd rather trust the half dozen professors who wrote the book than some bozo who read it and obviously didn't understand it.

Libraries are free and the internet merely costs a little extra quality control. Be your own school.

I don't have the big diesel truck, I don't have the fancy smartphone with the big data plan, I don't have the 50" TV with subs to all the streams.

I do have the emergency fund.

People made their own choices what they were going to use their money for.

The ones who are "out of touch" are the ones that thought they could keep spending at or beyond their means and think that nothing bad would happen.

You forgot the biggie - debt.

Also, job dependency and premature consumerism.

People have been so brainwashed into getting a job, a car loan, a mortgage and a credit card that it's no wonder they have no savings.

Smart people save before spending.

... i'm with jimbo, don't mess with Gordons and Schweppes, maybe a slice of lemon or lime.

... or cheese and pickled onion on a cracker.

Schweppes (props for correct spelling, btw.) cures a lot of blemishes when it comes to gin.
When you take the Gordons-on-the-rocks test and pass it with ease, compare this to a fine gin, you'll notice the difference.

I stand corrected on the spelling of Schweppes (I should have checked it) but I'll disagree with your assessment of Gordon's.

Gordon's (correct spelling!) is a fine gin but it isn't intended to be drunk straight, on-the-rocks, or lightly seasoned with vermouth and olive. It's at its best mixed with a tonic with enough balls to stand up to its robust flavor. Of course you want a more delicate gin for a martini or on-the-rocks.

It's like tequila. You don't use Patron or Don Julio to make a margarita. You drink them straight with a wedge of lime and some salt. For a Margarita you want something with more agave bite, like Cuervo Especial Gold.

Flavored whisky shots?
Gin is just flavored vodka.
Pretty much the same.

duuuude, no fucking way
vodka's made from potatoes
gin from juniper

That's urban legend.
Most vodka is made from grain
Just as most gin is.

https://www.livescience.com/41298-what-is-vodka.html

Quote
Today, most vodka is made from fermented grains such as sorghum, corn, rice, rye or wheat, though you can also use potatoes, fruits or even just sugar.

As for juniper,
Just flavoring added like
Fireball's cinnamon.

Good morn Bitcoinland.
Six one four nine US bucks
(Bitcoinaverage).

It feels to me like
Another lazy Sunday,
Nothing much to do

Except eat and drink
And try to avoid Covid
By staying at home.

Now it seems as if
Laziness is becoming
A noble virtue.

God, you all are going on about the finer points of gin, and here I am chugging fireball.....

(Yukon Jack is tasty as well)

I've tried to avoid the debate on how to treat gin. I enjoy it with Schwepp's and a twist as well as with Dolin's and an olive and a few drops of the brine.

But Bombay Sapphire for gawd's sake? Isn't that something they use for stripping paint? It's barely better than Beefeater or Gilbey's.

To rank it above Tanqueray is a sacrilege and Tanqueray is just middle-of -the-road. I prefer Hendrick's (especially Orbium) for a more subtle, refined taste and Gordon's for full-on honest juniper goodness.

To each their own, I guess. I place Sapphire, Tanqueray, and even Hendricks as about equivalent quality-wise. I just like the mix of infused botanicals in Sapphire.

Hendricks is good for a change of pace from time to time. Cucumber garnish, please.

Gordon's!? Egad, sir! Begone from this place with that turpentine! Well, I guess it's not _crap_ per se - just bland as all nothingness.

To each their own indeed.

I see that you hold classic Gordon's London Dry gin in almost as low esteem as I hold trendy Bombay Sapphire. There's a big difference between the two though.

In my opinion, Sapphire tastes like any other over-infused modern martini-oriented gin but without the sublety of Hendrick's or even Tanqueray. Gordon's on the other hand is not a martini gin. Its robust straight-up juniper flavor is unparalleled for mixing with tonic water. Even their  advertising recognizes this:

Quote
Almost 250 years ago, Alexander Gordon started his distillery in London and set about creating the recipe for a brilliant tasting gin. Gordon's high quality and distinctive juniper flavour has come to define the taste of the classic G&T. Gordon's today is a gin that's enjoyed, not dissected.

Whatever. Booze is intended for enjoyment, not debate. You enjoy your Sapphire. I'll enjoy may Orbium martinis and Gordon's & Schwepp's.

Cheers.

Good morning Bitcoinland.

Nasty little dip (only nasty because I can't buy it) last night... currently $6268USD/$8793CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

I've only got a little less than 3BTC accessible to me here and they have to last me until this Covid-19 thing blows over. I'd rather they were worth more at this time, instead of less. Oh well. They're mainly for sending to friends and family in Canada to keep my bills paid and take care of emergencies.

C'mon Bitcoin. Bart back up and beyond.

Now a bottle of gin for Jimbo, airdropped to the jungle please.

Thanks but what I really need is a few dozen cases of beer and several cases of assorted good dry red table wines.

I have lots of gin. I could also use some good full-flavored tequila for making margaritas. All I have left is the prissy "subtly-flavored" stuff you drink out of a shot glass.

Edit: ...also some real Cointreau for the margaritas please. All I have left is a cheap knock-off called "Controy" in a lookalike square bottle, and some other triple sec. I won't even mention the blue Curacao.

The only explanation is trading and that's something that never crossed my mind as many casualties of this thread will prove.

Trading is a sucker's game.

Traders are milked by exchanges just like rubes at casinos.
