Sal - do you have a timeline as to when http://www.coinchoose.com/jsondata.php?hours=X will be fixed? Thanks for your amazing work on this!

Is there any reason bitgemd doesn't support the networkhashps or netmhashps property of getmininginfo?
2343  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: eMunie the only unique and interesting alt-coin out of all these sh*tcoins on: July 08, 2013, 09:46:36 AM
I've spent a lot of time, invested a lot, will continue to invest a lot more, and have a long term plan of where I want this to go.  Putting it out as open source to start with would leave eMunie and that goal open to being undermined by "script kiddies" that just rip it and copy/paste it and throw out their own.
Wrong.
As long as it's closed source it is by no way worth of any trust, hence nobody will use it, hence you will have wasted your time spent coding.
Keeping it closed source will have exactly the effect you think it is preventing instead.

Either you release the sources or don't bother releasing at all: it may or it may not be successful, but as long as it's closed, it's certain it won't be.

You're an idiot. How many times have you inspected the code base of newly released coins? Virtually everyone here - even those that are more savvy than most - just git clone && make -f src/makefile.whatever (or for those less savvy, they grab the precompiled binaries). Being open source does not automatically indicate that it is safe. Being open source does not mean that the precompiled binaries are not loaded with trojan code. Being closed source does not preclude trust.
2344  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [KGC] The future is krugercoin and the future is now! [Official Launch] on: July 07, 2013, 06:32:46 PM
Well this rubbishcoin is on CoinChoose, so at least everyone can see that mining it will net you 1.53% profitability against mining Bitcoin. LOL.

Can't wait till the South African Mint sends this idiot a cease-and-desist for using a design that is not his. Hy's beslis dom, as ek gesê het.

You sound like a nice person..  Shocked

I don't know what is going on with that pricing - but it is not correct. Last KGC I sold was for around 0.00002 BTC..

I'm a South African, and I find this crapcoin offensive.
2345  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Scrypt ASIC on: July 07, 2013, 06:28:50 PM
Huh?

Do you know what an ASIC is? It is an APPLICATION SPECIFIC INTEGRATED CIRCUIT.

The key phrase there is APPLICATION SPECIFIC.

Do you know what application the ASICs currently produced for Bitcoin mining are specific to? SHA-256 hashing. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. They can't do general purpose calculations, they can't run generic code, they can only do SHA-256 hashing.

Do you know what Litecoin uses? If you think SHA-256 you'd be wrong. It uses scrypt, a COMPLETELY different mechanism. If you hope to use a SHA-256 chip to generate an scrypt hash you're sorely mistaken. What you want to do is IMPOSSIBLE.

Someone in this thread asked if you'd searched and read - your lack of understanding as to what an ASIC is indicates that you didn't read enough.
2346  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][Exchange] Latest Cryptsy Additions, News and announcements on: July 07, 2013, 06:18:56 PM
Is the Estimated Portfolio Value function broken? It previously included open orders at current market rates (which I liked, as it gave me an indication as to whether I should move orders around), but now I see it only estimates based on currency that is not held for orders. Please fix it so that it works the way it used to:)

Edit: looks fixed now, thanks!

so, for the love of minecraft...

WTB 1k (or whatever you're willing to sell) CRC for BTC. offer pls

I can do 1k CRC. With the low block reward and the relatively long block time it has taken me some time to mine that substantial an amount of CRC, so I'd ask 0,0023 BTC per CRC.

expected such an offer to be honest.

let's talk about 0.00023 shall we?

5 min blocks with a block reward of 10 means that I'd need 8.4 hours if I solved every block (this is impossible). We're talking about me dedicating a substantial number of mh/s for at least 18-24 hours to generate 1000 CRC. I'm happy to negotiate, but given the amount of LKC, FTC or LKC I could mine in the same period it we will need to find a point between our comparatively high and low offers. Suggest a more realistic price point and let's see if it fits with my calculations?

Name is from President Paul Kruger - and digital version of the gold coin Krugerrand.
Check wikipedia for more info.

This is a serious coin -

Jy's beslis dom. Weet jy nie dat die ontwerp van die Krugerrand kopiereg is nie? En die webwerf is KAK.

Sal - great work, but please can you include the 7-day average in the API. Additionally, I'd appreciate a 7-day adjusted ratio average. At the moment I'm scraping the site every 180 seconds and pumping the data into Mongo to maintain my own history, but it would be a great deal easier if I could just hit the API:)

Bump...?

Incidentally, this returns null: http://www.coinchoose.com/jsondata.php?hours=168

2353  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: First prepaid card to exchange Bitcoins on: June 24, 2013, 06:40:23 PM
I've decided to chip in and purchase one:

Initial impressions: there is a distinct lack of automation on the site (they're using a single payment address instead of hitting the getnewaddress RPC function, and presumably confirming transactions manually). That doesn't preclude the service from working, nor does it indicate it's a scam, just that it's very new. I'm interested in seeing how I load funds into the card, at what rate, and what the costs are. The initial cost of the card is exceedingly high, but from the FAQ it seems that after 24 months when the card expires you can opt to get a new one - and there's no indication that there's an additional charge for this. I'll update with further info once the card arrives etc. etc.

Has the discourse.org forum software been looked at? It looks brilliant, imo.

http://www.discourse.org/

http://try.discourse.org/

YES and discourse is horrible! It is written on RoR just waiting for a security attack.

What do you find horrible about it? I haven't used it in practice.

RoR is a VERY bad choice at this stage if you want a secure site. You shouldn't need to worry about the language you're writing in suffering from underlying security concerns. I like RoR, but it's not ready for something like this.

I have had many successful LTC->BTC trades with Aahzman. Highly recommended, +1

Personally, I would sell my Ripples right now, the value of it is highly inflated.
2356  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin article on Wikipedia on: May 11, 2013, 08:04:30 AM
When is the last time you saw someone purchase illegal drugs online with dollars?

I'm not sure that it matters whether it is online or face-to-face. The article didn't qualify the spending as being online but rather a broader statement that encompassed all spending.

Also, I'd like to point out that there are many, many forums where people can buy pharmaceuticals from guys in other countries, and much of their exchange is done via PayPal or Western Union or MoneyPak or whatever.
2357  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin article on Wikipedia on: May 10, 2013, 05:12:13 PM
simply add "like cash"

I actually like this idea quite a lot - the sooner people start thinking about Bitcoin as "digital cash" - and stop thinking about it as a "hacker currency", "terrorist money", "drug exchange", or "anti-political funds" - the better it is for general adoption.
2358  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin article on Wikipedia on: May 10, 2013, 05:19:05 AM
It was a bad idea mentioning bitcoin in your edit comment - this shows that you're making the edit as a 'statement' rather than as a fact.  Even with a valid reference, it will get reverted and won't last long because of this lack of neutral point of view.

Will

It already got reverted once and I had to change the phrasing, so it wouldn't have lasted long. Still, the article history from my original edit onwards is pretty hilarious now:

:-P
2359  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin article on Wikipedia on: May 10, 2013, 05:14:58 AM
They say that what we're selling is illegal.

Ask them to explain to you fully what they mean by this.

If they mean selling currency on their website is illegal then they're making a fair point. If their reasoning is...

Quote
...they quotes this line from the Wikipedia article on Bitcoin: "A large share of such commercial use is believed to be for illicit drug and gambling transactions."

...then ask them to explain why that's relevant.

If they can't explain, ask them to get their lawyers to explain it to you.

I'd be very interested to hear their reply.

Unfortunately I can only reply to the compliance department and not the person that lodged the complaint, and I already replied to them a few days ago. Since our listing stands I figure they just ignored the complainant.
2360  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin article on Wikipedia on: May 09, 2013, 06:06:12 PM
So someone very (un)kindly reported one of our Bitcoin listings on the local auction/shopping site (basically an eBay clone, but they've been around for like 10 years). They say that what we're selling is illegal. In defense of their report they quotes this line from the Wikipedia article on Bitcoin: "A large share of such commercial use is believed to be for illicit drug and gambling transactions."

Despite ongoing discussions in the Talk section of that article, and despite the quoted references simply not saying that, it seems that the sentence stands and is not going to be modified or removed. In disagreement with this, I've updated the Wikipedia article on the US Dollar and added in this line a few days ago: "A significant share of the commercial use of U.S. dollar bills is believed to be for illicit drug and gambling transactions." I do not think that the Bitcoin article should list such a specious "fact" without any evidence to support it, and most definitely not in the opening paragraphs.

So...does anybody have any sway as a Wikipedia editor that can either remove this "fact" or at least move it to a different part of the article and make it clear that it is supposition?
