I think the massive dump triggered a shutoff switch....  Shocked

Yeah, but it wasn't even massive, just medium, yet if they have a shutoff for that it is complete garbage. It almost is like a gut fear reaction, Gox doesn't want the price dropping so they just turn off their exchange, haha.

BTW this is what wall street does Wink

good morning I open bitcoinwisdom to look at the movement to see the price at 1040 and a dump follow right away and brings the price to 990  Cheesy

some men want to watch the world burn  Cheesy  it has been happening repeatedly now, the price goes up the bids build up then a dump follow and again and all over again...

Who's from Belgium here?

I'm trying to remember. It came up in a beer discussion a while back.

The Belgian was pimping his own country's brews and dissing everybody else's, especially Heineken.

I have to say that I think in this case the Belgian is correct!  Wink

A bit ironic for me though as I live in Belgium but don't drink.

They put a lot of effort into their beer here. I think that around the world there are only 7 genuine monastic beer distilleries - and 6 of them are in Belgium. It's part of a religion to them!

It was me! And actually I said there are plenty of good beers in other countries, but comon, there's no way you can defend Heineken :-D. Oh and I'm not a lover of Pils in the first place.

Oh, I remember that one...

I took the position that Belgian beer is akin to raw sewage (with more malty overtones, perhaps).

However, in the meantime I had to revise my position a bit... as part of an accident that I don't want to talk about, I recently ingested a moderately large amount of raw sewage.

That was the exact moment when I realized the grave injustice I did to raw sewage by comparing it to Belgian beer earlier.

Cheesy

OOOOOoooooohhhhhh!  Shocked

 Smiley

or instead of drinking bear invest that money in bitcoin and I assure you that the crazy movement of price will get you as sick as when you get drunk  Cheesy  and no Beer in the world is comparable to it  Wink

disclaimer: I don't drink alcohol Smiley

3 times before did I buy into staring rallies, only for them to reverse and me panic-selling and losing some money. This time (Friday) I decided not to buy-in, and my collection of regrets acquired a new exhibit of almost $10000 not made, fiat which could have later been used to increase my BTC stash. I am still holding my position from 12 days ago, testing my steadfastness. I almost panic-bought at 950, but managed to reign in the emotions. Still curious as to where it will lead me... Will I eventually join the herd..?

bad strategy, a good strategy would be buying in batches when the price is dropping, simply never buy when the price is going up fast and never sell when the price is dropping fast, you will just get burned.... you wont catch a top neither a bottom, because seriously " who can predict a top or a bottom?"

the best strategy is just buy at any point and hold for the long term, I am sure who bought from 2009-2013 doesnt regret a thing today, so now that Bitcoin is really going mainstream and it is being exposed to millions of new comers what is holding you ?

I think TA should be used with real caution now, since the fundamentals have improved and we have a lot of bigger players entering. Just some advice for the people who focus mainly on TA.

I don't know, really. What else do you have, other than TA?

I mean, fundamentals are subject to interpretation as well. There is no "objective" way to look at news/fundamentals... the market reaction to the Silk Road bust is a perfect example for that.

My point is, TA is just as useful or not useful as it always is.

Perhaps what you have in mind is better phrased as: "don't cling to *outdated* assumptions from TA".

I remember one of the mantras being repeated after the April peak/crash was that "price has to deflate back all the way" (which was either ~15 USD = price at beginning of the rally or ~30 USD = previous ATH). In reality, final capitulation was at ~60 USD, off by a factor of 2.

* * *

The current situation still fits into my own expectations... we went up pretty nicely over the last weeks, and with some extra force in the last few days, and I still consider it a real possibility that we're seeing an early end to the post-December peak bear market. On the other hand, we have what could be a (spread out) double top at 1070/1090, and there's also a real chance we're still going to go down much further.

I'm not tempted to re-adjust my position quite yet. If we go through 890-900 (mtgox) *with force*, and close below it, I'm starting to get worried. Well, not really, but I would consider the "continued bear market" scenario more likely again.

your inputs are one of a few valuable to me at this thread, you make them logical and based on many factors (TA, the sentiment of the market, and news) when all combined they make sense, even when sometimes I don't totally agree with you but I always consider and respect the approach.   Smiley

I know that this might draw a number of derisive replies, but has anyone considered that we might actually be in the final and most pronounced dead cat bounce?

in my opinion, what is happening now is not a try to trigger panic sell, because we are over this, people already learned how to smartly hold, what is happening now is a try to pull down the ASK book in a way that more orders will build up at lower prices so these buyers who drove the price up can still get cheap bitcoins...

just look at the ASK sum 15500 BTC on the whole sell book @ mtgox!!! out of the 12 million Bitcoin existing this is really really small amount, all exchanges put together doesn't sum up more than 300K bitcoins, people are holding and believe about the future of Bitcoin, I think $1000 and $2000 are still really cheap and optimistic entries for new comers, and I think allot share the same view with me .

looking again there is more than 1500 BTC back to $1095....

well just to cinfirm my prediction

look at http://trading.i286.org/ to see the history of sells and buys, who ever is doing this is a real smart player he pull down the sell orders so he can buy cheap

go to some URL that requires login (like https://www.mtgox.com/trade ) and use the login form in the middle of the page instead of the one on the top-right

everything looking cool from here, I don't know what kind of issues you are having !!1

2373  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 06, 2014, 07:44:48 AM
There are about 25,000 coins left on all the exchanges put together.  Just guesstimating -- didn't actually count them.

For about 40 million you could get a corner on bitcoin.

That's about 9 days of mining output.

If this is correct this makes the current market price meaningless. BTC is ridiculously thinly traded.

Further you cannot extract a market cap out to 12 million coins based on trades of 25,000 coins.  People saying BTC has a market cap of $12 billion fail to appreciate what would happen if one whale stirred.

People will probably flame me for saying this but whatever.  I am contributing by buying and hodling.

really ? this is the same on every stock market, even the same with gold and silver, when we say a company is worth X billion this means it is based on the trading price of one stock, now someone dumping a large hold of stocks will bring the shares price down to ground, the same works for Gold and Silver, it is just more noticeable with BTC because there is no fast exchanging mechanism of going In/out but this will be gone soon when we hit wall street Wink
2374  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 06, 2014, 07:39:31 AM
I don't know why people think that big holders will dump, the more price will rise the better it works for them, even if they need fiat, selling 1000 BTC at $500 is not like selling 1000 BTC at $2000.

it works better for them when the price go up, will they buy the same amount or even half of what they hold now if the price drop to $500? I don't think so... and BTW big holders look in investing in bitcoin startups instead of cashing to FIAT, by that they surpass regulation and the hassle of getting that cash on their accounts Wink

rpietila just created a new self moderated thread: I will make it my duty to stop his fucking ego that harms the noobs.

Welcome to the new business lounge. Wine and cigars are on the house.

The intention of this thread is to post analysis on short to medium term fiat/BTC price developments, scenarios, portfolio allocation, etc. what fits the topic. No double bottoms, ad hominem, trolling or low level comments. As usual, your post will be deleted if not conforming to guidelines above.

instead of bragging about your cigars and millions and your worthless predictions you could just start helping the people in need and post about it to be a model for others....otherwise go shove your millions and cigars up your ass, I just gave you the first comment to delete start from here  Cheesy

he will delete and report me for sure, but totally worth it  Cheesy

bitcoins keep coming to the exchanges and Asks keep building, Bids are really slow and not catching up that fast

couple of hours ago the sum of total ASKs was around 15000 BTC

most interesting is the Bid sum seems to be the same, this means who ever sold before or had low bids didn't change that position yet.

I recall rpietila prediction about going to 800 than crashing all the way down to 400 and staying there for some time, I really want to hear his input about the late events, because you all trashed me because of being a bit aggressive about of his prediction

he logs everyday and he doesn't post a single word, if you are reading this I am still interested on your fancy predictions and especially the way you drag the noobs by bragging about the expensive cigars and the money you have...

Didn't he promise not to post before $350? Cheesy

Well he's broken that promise if so. He accurately predicted the fall. So did walsoraj. He also invited us to "JOIN THE BEARS," the first time it hit 900. Of course anyone who did so would have missed the run up to 1200, though still could have bought back in and increased their position true if they were patient.

I don't blame Risto for his predictions.  He was basing them on a log-linear line in the growth adoption curve.  He may very well be readjusting that because it appears we are on a much faster growth curve as seen on these charts:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=322058.msg4227521#msg4227521

well, he has such an ego, people with that kind of ego make great things in life but cant hold to them, at the time when I proved him wrong he could just admit that he was wrong, but he kept bitching about his millions and he even said "you should listen to people who has much than you" and I like the club thing that he has to bring all the time, "a Pro trader like me" hahahaha and " my clients" and "my club" , I mean get the fuck out idiot...

Is that your ego speaking?  Roll Eyes

no, I even told him that I will apologize publicly here if he will share a screen shot of his bids to make sure that they reflect the actual prediction, but did he ? yes he did show me a screen shot of 1.4 million dollar sitting there on stamp, so again he wanted to show me how rich he was....
