Everyone knows that when reading Russian news, you always have to read between the lines.

and in ukrainian news you shouldnt?

You should but not to the same extent. And you shouldn't be reading just one source of news, either. Ukrainian news matches news from USA, Poland, Germany, Turkey, Bulgaria, Latvia, and others. Russian news only matches Russian.

why dont you visit russia and see for yourself that its absolutely not what its being presented as.

Because my family is blacklisted since USSR days and I don't want to risk being turned away at the airport (most people who renounced their citizenship and emigrated in the 80's got on a list, and us more so because my grandfather, who left with us, was head of USSR's polytechnical institute, which is USSR's equivalent of DARPA). Because I'm gay and they can fine, detain, assault, or deport me. Because I am involved with bitcoin, and that is soon to be a criminal offense. And mostly because I don't need to. I talk to plenty of people in Russia, since I have friends living there, and my parents have many friends there too. We hear plenty about their life from them.

you have to accept that its ukrainians killing ukrainians there!

That's really difficult to accept after all the photos of Russian military hardware, Russian troops posing for pictures, and Russia admitting that they sent Russian military to "help" Ukrainian rebels. Especially since this exact same tactic was used by Russia in Georgia, Afghanistan, Cuba, and tons of other places they invaded over the past century.

country is not a prison - once uniting strings are lost you cant keep people in it against their will.

This I agree with. But not when a minority makes that choice for a majority. And especially when that minority originally consisted of foreign agitators. How would you feel if your neighbors wanted to join North Korea, and started a war on your territory, destroying your property, and tried to force you to agree with them? That's not how you break off from a country. Besides, it didn't start with a few people wanting to break away. It started with Russia scaring the fuck out of everyone in eastern Ukraine with their lies about Ukrainian government being completely taken over by Nazis, and that a Nazi is guaranteed to win the presidency. So the entire premise that the war was started on was Russian lie, and was wrong.
242  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet on: December 12, 2014, 09:57:42 AM
If you love our wallet, and love supporting us, PLEASE make sure that you have a working verified backup of your wallet, and any single address keys you may have. We had some incidents where people lost their keys for whatever reason (phone wiped, app uninstalled, etc) and the users didn't have a backup, or had an encrypted one without the password, making it useless. We also had someone who thought scanning their public bitcoin address into their wallet was all they needed to restore a backup, since the address was added and showed a balance in their wallet (it was a watch only address at that point), and they were quite upset when they sent more coins to that address, and later found out that they couldn't spend from it.
So, users losing coins upsets us a lot, we really hope everyone keeps their coins safe, and being safe and having backups keeps us happy and "supported"  Smiley

The universe, nature around us, and life show us that there is something fantastically great behind everything that exists. If there weren't, researchers would have developed life extension so that we could all live to 1000 years old, long ago.

Why do you say that? Is your claim that, because it took our monkey brains hundreds of years to develop understanding and tools to understand biology, that biology is too complex to be created by anything but a god? Why does a system have to be simple for it to be natural? And, let's say our society collapses, and we lose a lot of our knowledge. Does the fact that it would take centuries to rediscover how to make something as complex as a computer CPU mean that CPUs are made by god? Or better yet, what will you be claiming when, in 50 years or so, we DO figure out how to live to 1000? (We're actually very close, since we understand almost all mechanisms of aging at this point, and are now just working on ways to repair and modify them)

As it is, research is still just finding out some of the basics of life. And we certainly don't have the ability to travel the universe. We can barely get off our own planet. Since we don't have much of a handle on anything - like we don't even know how to will ourselves to grow back a finger when we lose one - where does all this complex universe come from?

Why do you say it's complex? That's just your personal opinion, based on your lack of knowledge. Life and the universe are fairly straightforward to biologists, physicists, and engineers. You are arguing from ignorance here, basically claiming "I don't understand, so no one else does either."

We use religion basics in our everyday lives. We "religiously" do certain activities all the time - eating, sleeping, going to the job, breathing.

That's not religion, that's biomechanical processes and instincts Tongue We do them because our body sends signals making us crave those things, and rewards us with physical evidence when we complete the tasks. You don't eat food because you have faith that you are hungry, and have faith that you will feel full after. Conversely, a person born in a society that doesn't believe in god or Jesus (such as in Islamic, Buddhist, Shinto, or atheist society) doesn't get cravings for Jesus.

Think long and hard before you decide to bypass religion.

Every atheist in America has. You may assume that atheists started out that way, and just haven't considered the idea of god before, but in fact America is absolutely steeped in religion. 80% of it is Christian (which is why we laugh when they claim religious persecution, or claim they are courageous to say they love Jesus in public), and religion is mentioned everywhere almost daily. So atheists almost always start out christian here, believing what you believe, and then get educated, start questioning and thinking, and come to their senses, realizing that Christian stuff doesn't make sense.

Some of that religion is about God, the Guy Who holds your life and existence in the palm of His hand. To see it, simply look at nature around you, and see how your existence fits into everything that exists.

Fitting into things that exist is evolution, not god. You, as a species, would not exist in your environment if you didn't fit into it, because you would either starve due to lack of food you need, or get eaten due to being weak and stupid. So of course every living thing fits into everything that exists. Those who didn't went extinct long ago.
244  Other / Off-topic / Re: Scientific proof that God exists? on: December 12, 2014, 09:25:50 AM
We first have to start with the claim as a hypothetical.  This is permitted because we needn't argue for the claim itself, at least in a direct sense.

The claim, unsupported by any evidence, serves as a point of reference.  Having made the claim, we then need to create a theory that explains the entirety of reality at the height of generality, i.e. a theory whose explanatory power cannot logically be surpassed.  By definition, such a theory would provide insight into the most fundamental characteristics of reality.

After first demonstrating that such a theory is sound, we look at those fundamental characteristics and hold them up to our initial claim.  If the results of the theory imply the claim, then we can conclude God exists, and at a 100% level of certainty (practically, it's irrelevant if people modify their original claim; identifying and knowing the absolute limit of rational explanation is the important part).

First of all, all you'll have as a result is a hypothesis, not a theory. And that's no more valid than an opinion, albeit based on logical set of words. And second, that theory does not automatically prove god exists, particularly because you would have to define what god is in the first place. So far no one has been able to.
245  Other / Off-topic / Re: I know there is no such thing as 'free energy' but what if it was possible? on: December 12, 2014, 09:17:23 AM
Aether is an outdated belief, like flat earth. We believed that electromagnetic energy, which includes light, traveled in waves, and waves require a medium to travel through. However, there is vacuum in space, so we couldn't understand how those waves could travel through space, and theorized that maybe the universe is filled with this aether that energy waves go through. However, there was no way for us to detect that aether, and numerous experiments showed that there is no evidence for its existence, other than that light and radio travel through space somehow. It was much later after Tesla that we discovered that light is both a wave and a particle - photon - and thus that energy can travel through space in particle form. Something like aether, which we could never prove existed, turned out to not be needed for the universe to work, and is thus considered to not be real in science.

In short, not everything Tesla invented was scientifically correct or functional. Especially in his later years when he went from electro mechanical systems, to more theoretical based on ideas that wouldn't be proven false or true for decades later.

Oh, and this sentence on that web site
Quote
Their emissions of longitudinal impulses can exceed the speed of light
pretty much confirms my suspicion that it's be. Nothing can exceed the speed of light.

Forget about having zero protection with BTC rather than with a Credit Card...
but some how you're trying to tell me point and scan is better or somehow faster than just swiping??

How can you swipe on the internet?

^
Total cardholders' money lost: ZERO

Not exactly. Do you still shop and use your credit cards? Then you are losing more money. Who do you thinkcom takes the hit on stolen credit cards being used to buy stuff? The credit card companies? Nope. It's the merchants. If a thief uses your card to buy something, and you report your card stolen, the credit card company simply yanks that money out of the merchant's bank account. They don't go after the thief, or pay for the loss themselves. And the merchant has to make that money back somehow, so they do it by raising prices on everything in the store. The average annual loss to merchants from credit card theft is about 3%. That means stuff you pay for is 3% more expensive. So, take the total that you spend with credit cards every year, multiply that by 3%, and that's how much you and cardholders lost (for example, if you spend $1,000 a month, you lost $360 in a year).

Coincidentally, when I shop with bitcoin, I get discounts of 3% (and up to 10% sometimes) on everything I buy. So the reality is that cardholders are the ones actually losing money from theft, and I'm not.

have it ever come across to you that it might be resonating events rather correctly when covering russia/ukraine situation? ohh and you clearly avoided the last part of my previous statment.

It has. But the events Zerohedge is "resonating" are pretty much a rehash or the exact same thing Russia is reporting. Combine the fact that Russia has had almost a century of practicing lying in the media (and has been caught lying about things in just this last year), including about their military involvement in various places over the last century, their massive propaganda campaigns during and after soviet times, and what I and others there actually see happening in and around Ukraine, including lots of photographic evidence, and I am inclined to believe almost the opposite of whatever reports come out of Russia. Which, coincidentally, matches the reports coming out of the rest of the world's media. Everyone knows that when reading Russian news, you always have to read between the lines.

I ignored the last part of your statement because it was irrelevant?
250  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Mycelium announces Entropy project on Indiegogo on: December 12, 2014, 08:27:27 AM
Btw, can anyone confirm for me if the HP Photosmart 8450 is compatible? My folks have that printer model, so I'd like to get them an Entropy if it will work!

Is there an easy way to test for this? Like, put a jpg on a thumb drive and see if the printer detects it?

Yes, that's how you would test it. Plug a USB stick with a jpeg on it into the port, and see if there's some way to print it.

I read through the printer manual, and although it supports printing photos without a computer, it doesn't say if it can do that from the USB port, or if that is limited to just the memory card slots. I asked on Amazon, but if you can just do the USB stick with a jpeg photo test on it, that would be quicker. Let me know if that works, and if yes, I'll add it to our list of compatible printers.

I did, in fact, test it this way; I directly printed a jpeg from a thumb drive plugged into it, so you can definitely add it to the list, then! Looks like I'll be ordering one. Smiley

Awesome. Thanks!

You ONLY get penalized if you Accept the offer by pressing the Accept button, and then cancel the offer after.
Exactly.  We both accepted, he flaked out and I canceled the trade.  And now I pay the price!?
There are still three more trades that he started.  Can I cancel the expired trades or will I get stung again?

Why would you accept the trade without even knowing who the other person is, or whether they intend to go through with it?

In any case, that whole reputation thing needs to be rebuilt anyway. We hope to get to it some time soon.

252  Economy / Speculation / Re: permabulls not only lost the control over this section-in fact they are extinct on: December 11, 2014, 04:29:01 AM
Another permabull, checking in. Still entirely in bitcoin, still living almost exclusively on it since June of 2013, still using it to buy all my groceries and stuff, and still converting all the cash I get into bitcoin.

Bitcoin fundamentals haven't changed. It's still better, faster, and more convenient than dollars or credit cards. Dollar, Euro, and Yuan fundamentals, on the other hand, are continuing to change, for the worse. So  Tongue

Not at the moment, hopefully that will change over the next few years

I pay for groceries by showing the cashier a bar code on my phone, and having them scan it with their scanner. Takes a second, and I'm on my way out. Paying for things online is way easier, too. Just point and scan, instead of dig through wallet for a card, enter lots of details, etc.

On this one year anniversary post I want to give a plug to zerohedge.
When the comment above was posted I had not heard of zerohedge.
This comment caught my eye I started reading it.

Zerohedge is now probably the only news page I check on a daily basis and I highly recommend it to anyone who was even remotely interested in this thread.

I used to be a fan of Zerohedge too, until they went "full retard" on the whole Russia/Ukraine thing  Undecided

zero hedge is one of the few sites out there with truth presented in most exposive form. with quite intelligent readers you can always be amused by sharp comments and unique kind of humor shared by very narrow group of people. those whose third eye is wide open can clearly understand the narrative.
see, as far as i know you are ukrainian living in american continent. most ukrainians that moved abroad after ww2 are the ukrainian national army (UPA) types who were suppressed by ussr even way after the war for all the war crimes they have commited (you might as well disagree with that but thats just your 'truth' - there is plenty of evidences out there to prove my statment). so when it comes to harvesting information about your country you have to rely on ukrainian msm to construct opinion. you dont live there and cant possibly see the whole picture even if your friends in kiev are convinced that ukraine is a sovereighn state right now. ether way you are unable to be a subject of this matter as it contradicts with your understanding of events.
there is a saying: правда глаза режет - truth irritating eyes

Uh... what? No, I just meant that Zerohedge is typically antigovernment and nonconformist when it comes to news reports, rightfully pointing out that the government controlled media typically lies and that there is always more to the story, but in this case the media was reporting about an actual dictatorial warmongering power with actual control of the media, and Zerohedge went full retard when it again decided to be contrary to media reports, and starting to support those dictatorial warmongering power claims (or rather propaganda). It has actually been somewhat depressing seeing so many libertarians and anarchists assume that since the media lies, it is obviously lying about the Ukraine/Russia situation too, so obviously they should support Russia. It's like watching the EFF come out in full support of the NSA.

Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that god is not real...

There. I just made a counter argument just as valid as all of yours.

In simple form, your argument is valid.

In complex form, questioning where the complex things of the universe came from, the clearest answer is God, even though we don't have absolute proof for Him, and may never have it.

No, that's the simplest answer. But it is no more valid or true than answering that the universe came from a unicorn's butt. The reason is that there is absolutely no way to test and verify your claim, since as you said, there isnt even any conclusive proof that he even exists, and thus your "god did it" is nothing but your own personal opinion. And as everyone keeps telling you, until you actually provide proof, one that we can test and verify ourselves, all you're arguing about is your own unsubstantiated opinion.

Raise Your Hand Idiot Reader If You Claim Armstrong Was Guilty

*raises hand*

No need, we already knew that.

That I think he was guilty of at most a crime, and of at least a completely idiotic fuckup of Mark Karpelean proportions? Wow. You can predict the future ever better than Armstrong.

You are incapable of studying the facts of the case.

No, I am uninterested in studying the facts, in a case involving a clearly insane and overconfident loony. There's a difference.
