321  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoincard.org on: October 15, 2014, 02:48:25 AM
any ETA for the launch?

Still hoping for end of this year or early the next.

Will this still require the use of gateways / re-transmitters?

Yes, however the first version will not be able to do full mesh networks. The tiny battery is not strong enough to keep it running and retransmitting all day, so it will only transmit and receive transactions when it's on.

I love this project but get creeped the hell out by the consumer tracking "features" in this video:

It creeps me out too, but there is nothing you can do if you have a device that transmits radio, and someone else uses a radio scanner that scans for unique signals. It doesn't matter if that radio is our Bitcoincard, your cell phone, your Bluetooth device, or even an NFC chip in your credit card. Best you can do is not associate your real identity with the number associated with your radio (like you don't associate your bitcoin addresses with your identity). I don't know if we are even still planning this feature, since the video was made over two years ago, and A LOT has changed since then, both in bitcoin and with our device (which looks nothing like the one in the video, check out mycelium.com), but if this technology is pretty much inevitable, anyway, then I'd rather it be us that controls what comes out eventually (we're very much against government snooping, as you can probably tell by the features were already have, and plan to implement, into our app).

Hmm looks great. I'm so used to android bitcoin wallet by andreas but this looks equally good as well. Nicely done

This has cold storage spending that let's you spend directly from a paper wallet (BIP38 encrypted private keys supported as well), and LocalTrader, which is like LocalBitcoin, but built right into your wallet, and much more secure and anonymous.
323  Economy / Exchanges / Re: bitfloor issues? on: October 15, 2014, 02:28:02 AM
I'm selling my 1.84915808 BTC debt owed by Bitfloor, to a lawyer who will use legal means (a lien, or?) to be compensated by the owner and/or thief.

I have not been refunded this BTC amount since the Bitfloor hack reported here: http://bitcoinmagazine.com/2139/bitfloor-hacked-250000-missing/ - and to my knowledge, nearly all of the "hacked" BTC has not been refunded to all Bitfloor customers, so my debt is just a drop in the bucket.

My account/BTC ownership/debt will be legally transferred to you. I took screenshots before the site went down.

There is no money to get out of that company, since they lost all funds and don't have a business any more, so a lawsuit will be useless.
324  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is the West gearing up to invade Russia once again? on: October 15, 2014, 02:21:40 AM
Note how all of this news is coming out of Russia only. No one here knows or cares about it, and would not support anything of the sort. America isn't even going in to support Ukraine's fight against Russian invasion and annexation, despite a treaty promising that they will.

This sounds like nothing more than Russia making up stories of a nonexistent foreign enemy to shore up nationalism and support for their corrupt government. They saw what people fed up with government corruption did in Ukraine, and are now afraid that their own citizens might get the same ideas.
325  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Christian BS on: October 09, 2014, 10:54:24 PM
Why is that a paradox? Or rather, what is the paradox?
326  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoincard.org on: October 09, 2014, 10:29:01 PM
That's right. It uses the open/free frequency spectrum, and only sends short bursts of data to transmit transactions, instead of a steady connection.
What frequency will you use? There are differences between countries about ISM.

868 or 915 MHz, depending on the jurisdiction.
327  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Christian BS on: October 09, 2014, 07:33:37 PM
Anyone who follows the Bible literally is an idiot because you have cultural relativism into play.  All of those teachings while relevant in the respective society that was taught in, should not be viewed literally in contemporary society.

That's basically saying that things that were written into the bible were considered moral by the people they were written, even if they were "inspired by god." But with time, we as people realized ourselves that those things are not actually moral, despite the bible and "god" telling us they are. So if we can figure out what's more moral than what god tells us, and are rejecting his version of morality already, then why do we need god?
328  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet on: October 08, 2014, 03:56:59 AM
It seems smart to recommend to people on downloading this upgrade that they backup any not backed up single addresses BEFORE installing 2.0 HD. I've always backed up mine immediately, but there might be situations where people haven't. Obviously, they could always send the contents of this address to their new, HD account, I guess, but they might not want to immediately for whatever reason.

You can still sort of back up your old addresses manually, by exporting their private keys from the pop-up menu once you highlight the address. But you would have to write the key down yourself.
329  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Mycelium 2.0 HD - Welcome to the future on: October 08, 2014, 03:54:31 AM
@Rassah Being such an old member of BitcoinTalk, dont u know where these kinda threads belong ? Why do u always post these under Bitcoin Discussion ? This belong to Service Announcement !!!

Being an old member, I know that a lot of people stick to their own favorite sections, and occasionally check the main thread, so I post there in the hopes that some people who may have never heard of Mycelium will see it before it's buried under an avalanche of new topics.

-- Jan Dreske (Mycelium Developer anxious to get this thing out to the public)

Over the summer the Mycelium dev team has been working hard to make Mycelium 2.0 a reality. Our 200+ beta testers have given us great feedback and today, our biggest and most significant wallet update has finally been released for everyone.

Direct download: https://mycelium.com/bitcoinwallet
On Google Play we use staged rollout, where it is released gradually over the next few days: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mycelium.wallet

New Features:

* Added support for BIP32/BIP44 compliant HD accounts based on a single master seed
* A much simpler backup that uses a word list to backup all your HD accounts (BIP39)
* No more address reuse, which greatly increases privacy
* You can label transactions in transaction history
* Transactions can be created with poor or no internet connectivity, and be broadcast later
* You can now have unlimited number of watch-only addresses
* Cold Storage spending now let's you spend unconfirmed inputs

What does HD mean?

HD is short for Hierarchical Deterministic. Typically, bitcoin wallets generate each new bitcoin address from a unique random number, requiring a separate backup of each new address. To avoid losses from lack of backups, such wallets use a single bitcoin address for all your transactions. HD wallets instead use a “master seed” (a single large random number), to derive all future bitcoin addresses sequentially from that single seed. This means that you only need to make a backup once, and all the keys generated by an HD wallet can be restored at any time in the future just from that single master seed. HD wallets greatly improve your privacy by being able to keep generating new addresses. If you use the same address continuously all your transactions will be associated with a single address, and because all bitcoin transactions are public anyone can see what addresses you are sending funds to, and calculate your total balance. With an HD account new addresses are created whenever you send and receive funds, making your transaction activity and total balance very hard to track.

But I liked it the way it was! Will I have to change the way I use it?

All your keys, addresses and address book entries will be retained when you upgrade your app. The tab previously named “Keys” has been renamed to “Accounts.” Your old bitcoin addresses will become single address accounts, and you can continue to use them as before. We do advise that you switch to new HD accounts, though. You will also see your first empty HD account, which you can start using right away.

What about previous backups? Do my old ones still work?

Yes. You can still import keys and addresses you backed up with the previous version of Mycelium Wallet. However, we have removed the ability to create backups of single keys, or create new single addresses accounts. Instead, we advise you to backup your master seed and move your funds to the new HD wallet. As long as you keep your old backups, though, you will be able to recover your legacy accounts using Mycelium. To import a private key, switch to the “Accounts” tab, tap the icon with a key and plus symbol in the upper right corner, and select “Advanced”. Then scan your encrypted private key and enter the password.

Will I be able to continue to use my current Local Trader identity?

Yes. Your Local Trader identity will get carried over to the new version when upgrading along with your private keys.

How do I make a backup?

To create a backup, either tap the “Secure My Funds” button on the main page, or choose “backup” from the menu. You will be shown a list of words, one after the other. Write those words down with pen & paper. You then have to type in the words again, to make sure you got everything right. Store this word list in a safe place! Anybody who obtains this list can access current and future funds in your wallet!
Note: The backup procedure only backs up your HD accounts. Your classic single address accounts are not part of this backup procedure.

How do I restore a backup?

If your phone is lost or damaged you can make a fresh install of the mycelium wallet on a different device. Upon startup, choose “Restore Backup”. Choose 12 as the length of your word list, and let the “password” checkbox unchecked, and proceed to enter your word list. This recreates your master seed and automatically creates and synchronizes your first HD account. It might take some time until your first account is synchronized and the balance updates. If you had more than one account, navigate to the “Accounts” tab, tap the button with a key icon and plus on the upper right corner, and choose “Add HD Account” to re-create your second account, etc. Note: This procedure only restores your HD accounts. To restore your classic accounts you have to manually import each key/address by going to the Accounts tab, click the + button, select Advanced, and then Import. If your previous Mycelium installation had a Local Trader account you can recreate your trader account and data by clicking “Buy/Sell Bitcoins”, select the “My Info” tab, click “Create” and select the account that your local trader identity was associated with.

Can I restore a BIP44 wallet created with other software?

Yes. When you start a fresh install of the app you get the option to restore a backup. You can choose between word lists lengths of 12, 18, or 24 words, and also supply an optional password in accordance with BIP44. This way you can restore all HD accounts generated by other wallets compatible with BIP44 and BIP39. For instance, this allows you to import your TREZOR word list in case your device was lost or damaged so you can quickly move your funds to safety.

I'm trying to understand, don't you? If I were a direct threat to your life, would it be OK for you to kill me first? Or maybe you would just tell me "Kill me first because I am not a barbar!"

Can you explain how a bunch of virgin girls held captive by a bunch of military guys are "a direct threat to life?" Or are OK to force into a sexual relationship?

Hi there, we've been working to get Canadian charities to accept bitcoin donations for around a month.
We've got a few in the works but this is the first one that has fully implemented it.

http://www.womenscentrecalgary.org/donate/donate-with-bitcoin/

The Women's Centre of Calgary provides a safe place for all women. They also offer a wide variety of services to help low income and immigrant families.

Checked, reviewed, approved, and donation sent: https://blockchain.info/tx/7058ab24b4f26a667c5250b13453cd0aabb6751d4c4444b8d5abbacbb182a504

We've got a couple other charities signed up that haven't implemented it successfully yet. How long will this program continue?

Until our account runs out of money Smiley

Looking forward to a cool article on it in the Herald or Sun sometime
And its nice to see one get approved now and then

They were quite ecstatic about the donation! Here's the e-mail I got:

For god's sake, this is just common sense. At that level, people spend the extra earnings, the increased wage goes invariably directly back to the economy, I heard a while ago the incredible statement that 50% couldn't even raise $400 without having to borrow from friends or family. So even accepting that that bookseller might have to lay off an employee, that employee will be able to find a new job because of the income going back into the economy.

This has to be done. I don't think $15.00 p/h is good, that's too inflationary, but $10.00 minimum should be standard country wide, and a little bit higher than that in urban centers to account for the higher costs of living there.

Where does that extra money that gets put back into economy come from? Raising the minimum wage to $10 doesn't magically create $3 out of thin air in the employer's bank account. All it does is shift his accounting books to increase the cost of labor by about 40%. The sale of goods doesn't increase, at least initially. So that extra wealth, which gets added to the employee's income, which the employee can then turn around and add back into the economy, has to come from somewhere.

I'm thinking of doing an approach to these guys behind the ice bucket challenge:

Yes, ALSA is eligible. I doubt they would do it just to get $1,000 though

Hi,

I'm currently a board member for http://www.ac-af.com.  I have been trying to get in touch with Bitcoin100 for a few weeks now.

AC-AF is a non-profit with offices in Toronto and Tanzania, with people on the ground in Africa helping kids impacted by HIV/AIDS.  I recently convinced the rest of the board to allow me to integrate Bitcoin onto our site as a donation method.  I understand that Bitcoin100 provides grants of $1000 for non-profits - would we qualify for such a grant?

It was extremely difficult to get the board to understand how beneficial accepting Bitcoins as a form of donations, since most were only aware of what they saw on the news regarding the risks and its association with illegal activities.  I'm hoping that accepting Bitcoins as donations is only a first step.  It is very hard for us to send funds from Toronto to Tanzania (Africa) given the process and the fees involved.  I plan on having this organization send funds back and fourth using Bitcoins to pay for local programs, rent, salaries and grants in Africa once I can establish a credible conversion method on the ground in Tanzania.

The Bitcoin100 grant will go a long way for us as we are in the midst of new management at the organization with a new incoming Executive Director and fairly new and forward thinking board of directors.

Unfortunately we have received 0 bitcoin donations to date, but I am certain this will change in the future.

Our donation page is located at http://www.ac-af.com/blog/bitcoin
Our donation address is 14zrnfv5n6Ad2WAgvCojk1GK4txkCzre25

I think this one is fine. They added a bitcoin donation option less than two weeks before contacting me, and I have discussed this with them already, so I'm just going to go ahead and donate:

I would prefer if the donation option was visible someplace on their main Donation page.

Good morning,

My name is Kirsten Tynan, and I am executive director of the Fully Informed Jury Association, a 501c3, non-profit, educational organization dedicated to fully informing everyone of jurors' right and authority to judge the law as well as the facts in cases before them, and to conscientiously acquit through jury nullification when a just verdict requires it.

I have been looking into setting FIJA up to accept Bitcoin, and one area I have not yet figured out is what we need to do for Bitcoin donors to fulfill legal requirements for some kind of receipt for their tax-deductible donation. Do you have any guidance on this? I browsed the Bitcoin100 website a bit, but didn't find anything on this. I tried to send you a message through the BitcoinTalk forum, but that is not working for me at the moment so I hope it is okay to try and reach you by e-mail.

Thank you!

Wow. Prominent Bitcoin Button. They have their own wikipeadia article so i think they are a NPO and they specialize in educating Jury members about their rights. I wonder why one would need money for that since the website could do it on its own but they seem to do some sort of public service.

Probably need someone to actually run the website, plus my guess is they actually reach out to jurors to give them some training and such. I guess I'll take this as "they are approved." Since BitPay limits them to $1,000 a day, and someone already donated some today, I can't send them a donation until later. Will try again sunday after I'm back from Cryptolina.
EDIT: Read later that they added more information. Yeah, I'd say they are definitely approved. Just have to wait for BitPay.

And finally, belatedly, donation has been sent:
