That was a pretty impressive dump.

Anybody have a link to sidechain comment?

I quoted smooth statement, I dunno if that's what you meant.

3362  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 23, 2014, 05:34:16 PM
wow.  well that dump hurt.

Wonder when the downtrend is going to stop?  200?  180?  150?

I have my promise in place from the very ancient times: if XMR goes to 200, I will put a BTC100 bid wall in 150, and it will stay there as long as XMR is convincingly above 200 again (or get dumped into).

It already went below 200 Tongue

EDIT: Why not set it at 0.00175, that will support the previous low.
3363  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: October 23, 2014, 11:36:36 AM
Monero may not be a pump and dump coin, but there is certainly a lot of dumping going on, and the price is starting to suffer.

It's going down with bitcoin unfortunately. I think people might be worried about the sidechains as well. Smooth provided a nice statement about that in another topic.

In the wake of http://www.blockstream.com/ essentially making sidechains an inevitability - what is the point of holding XMR now? Wont all of the privacy Monero offers be available within the bitcoin blockchain?

I think the answer is no. First of all it is questionable whether you would really want to hold wealth long term on a sidechain. The security assumptions (even when it comes to things like network hash rate, but in other more fundamental respects as well) are questionable. It is more plausible you might want to use services or features on a side chain by moving your bitcoins there and then, relatively quickly, moving them back to the more secure main chain. For example, this might be be used for mixing, by moving your coins to a sidechain with ring signatures, transacting and then moving them back.

But this ends up being a lot like using a Bitcoin mixer, with many of the same issues such as simultaneity. For example, imagine you are making a donation to some controversial organization and you want to delink the bitcoins you are donating.

So you go ahead and move your coins to a ring-sig sidechain, move them around a few times, and then move them back. Unless other people are doing this at the same time, when you move your coins back to the main chain, you will get the same coins back that you started with.

Alternately, perhaps the organization wants to be all anonymous and stuff, so it publishes an address on the sidechain, and you donate to them there. They then withdraw the coins back to the main chain, and they get the exact Bitcoins you sent to the side chain.

Obviously if there are a few other people doing the transfers at the same time, there is a degree of mixing, but it is fairly limited.

I don't think a side chain with a specialized purpose can achieve the same degree of anonymity as a coin designed for that purpose, where the entire chain is being mixed and remixed continually. That is an emperical question though. It is possible that a Bitcoin side chain could get more usage and greater trust of its security for long term holdings than Monero will have. More usage would address the mixing issue to a some extent and trust in the security would address the need to constantly move coins back and forth (though there still may be a loss of network effect here). None of this is clear at all.

I also think it is possible the market may simply reject the notion of adopting the Bitcoin currency for everything. It will be an interesting experiment to decouple new features from using a different currency. We may well find that the reason for altcoins is not the features!

We (I) are shorting gold from 2008
Target 200-400 for now.

So you're underwater for around 6 years?

I would recommend monero.

In the last couple of days I was invited to explain cryptos to the Euro Banking Association.
A dozen of high-level deleguates from different institutions and European countries were there. I did mention the large potential impact of Monero in the future.  Wink

Nice work!

Monero never was as stable as now... Realy amazing
Image

Let's hope that when BTC goes up in fiat terms, XMR will follow.

Seems like there is still pretty much sell pressure. Everytime someone marketbuys 5-10k, the asks fill again after a few hours. For example: someone bought 7k to 0.0026 between 5:30 and 6:00 (GMT+1) and now there is again 7k till 0.0026.
3371  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 21, 2014, 02:30:00 PM
Monero has lost 2 positions in the coinmarketcap in favor of cannabiscoin and nubits.

Something is wrong here
Cannabis coin is down 73% today. Nubits made a sudden jump of 2 mil marketcap to 6 mil marketcap (Have a look yourself here:http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/nubits/#charts (on 17 october). Don't really know what's going on there, but it isn't threat to me.
3372  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 20, 2014, 09:21:41 PM
any idea of how many xmr on mintpal?

I think there are several altcoins being dumped and I'm wondering if it's from he same source ...

I wouldn't be suprised if it was a fairly large amount (something like 50-100k).
3373  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 20, 2014, 07:05:42 PM
Selling my 5000 XMR mintpal account .

PM offers or skype me: thestatdude

Man I'm sorry.  They said XMR withdrawels would resume soon ...

Moolah seems to be MIA: https://twitter.com/MintPalExchange/status/523939006988701696

Mintpal said that Ryan has control of the funds. But this sounds like money to me and not all tokens. I do believe they sent out some tokens, not BTC though...
A decent chunk of money for me is there. I honestly would never have put the funds there if I had been able to get the wallet installed on my MAC but it
has been a headache for me. Then again, I would have bought more XMR had I been able to install the wallet (and the price has gone down since then)...
Looking forward to the GUI (with .dmg installation  Grin )
Sad to hear that, but why did you choose for mintpal instead of poloniex? Liquidity of poloniex is ten times better.. I agree that installing the current wallet is a real pain in the ass. But hopefully tonights missives will bring some updates!

Just saw the buy support vs sell support on poloniex  Grin

Since most non-tech users have a hard time to set up the current monero wallet, they leave their XMR on the exchange. Bid/ask hardly says anything, walls could vanish when the price comes near. On top of that, you never now what's on the side ready for buying when they feel like it.

So our Mintpal XMR's gone or not? Huh Embarrassed

Is there anyone that withdrew their XMR succesfully? There was some speculation bytheway that Mintpal's XMR were sold off on poloniex.

Just read the doc. This is a very cool and interesting idea.  I have been looking for games with real in-game currencies(there are not much around).

Just a few questions I didn't fully understand.
What is MEW?
Do we purchase the gold directly from you for now by sending XMR?
When buying 1000 min gold during next 7 days, we get 20 XMR worth of gold per post in this thread before game is ready... this looks like a mistake? How much XMR/gold can we get per post?

Thx

All the info about the MEW you need is in this topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=776479.0
Rest of the questions you'll have to wait for rpietila to answer Tongue

I'm curious though how Bitpay handles their merchant coins. Who buys them?
They dump them straight away spread out on the biggest exchanges.
3380  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: How can Cryptsy.com serve you better? Still the #1 Digital Currency Exchange! on: October 16, 2014, 05:25:04 PM
sorry to bring up snapshots again but will you be keeping bitshares music shares for yourself again or honouring them pts deposit holders

Please add btsx to the exchange, it amazes me that you add hopeless coins with zero value, but don't add a promising high volume coin that is number 4 on coinmarket cap. Don't you want to make money?

It is unlikely we will participate in any snapshots, swaps or any program that involves our wallet private keys. Our Terms of Service outline that policy.

Your welcome to withdraw to a private wallet however to participate.

What's the status on adding XMR? After you've added Ripple, XMR is now #1 on the voting list. A few weeks back ago you stated that one project was holding up the adding of XMR, I assume that project was the adding of Ripple. An update would be nice!
