In case anyone missed it, a few updates from Shen Noether regarding Confidential Transactions (CT) for Monero:

Quote
Edit 11/21/2015: things are slowly coming together - MLSAG's have been coded in python (https://github.com/ShenNoether/MiniNero/blob/master/MLSAG.py) and then I need to get the RingCT code using these rather than the LWW sigs. After this I should be able to finish the size analysis in the paper and then hopefully get a really cleaned up copy available.

Quote
edit 11/27/2015: demo version of RingCT using the MLSAG's is coded - next up is implementing 1. Diffie helman passing of masks and 2. implement a short representation of amounts

So I was traveling all day today and couldn't really follow what happened on the test run... Can anyone give me a TLDR version of everything that happened? I think everything went smoothly but don't really know. So glad I don't really have to know how to run these types of things and know that monero is in good hands with active devs and experts in the crypto world.

See beneath:

The testnet fork that was scheduled for today seems to have gone fine.

Wrt payment IDs, I think luigi1111 developed "stealth" payment IDs, which are serialised into the designation address. He can probably elaborate on it better, but bottom line is that this will also hide the payment ID. I think the feature is included in 0.9.
2407  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] Is Spoetnik being paid to attack Monero? on: November 22, 2015, 08:32:21 PM
Spoetnik likes to think of himself as a Defender of all things crypto. Scam ousting is an honourable endeavour, but lately Spoetnik seems to be singling out Monero in particular. Monero has been slandered relentlessly since it launched in April 2014, mostly by Darkcoin fanatics (now DASH) who launched their coin in January 2014 and didn't want any other competition in the Anon space. Now as far as scams go, Monero is very low on the list. Meanwhile, the amount of shadiness coming from the Dash camp is almost unbelievable and unparalleled, yet Spoetnik doesn't even bat an eyelid.

Considering Spoetnik lost any BTC he may have had by investing in Jackpotcoin, it would seem plausible that Darkcoin/DASH or someone affiliated with them is paying Spoetnik to attack Monero at any opportunity. Especially given Darkcoin's history of false flag attacks and faking PMs from Satoshi Nakamoto (what audacity). Details here -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1233817.msg12879397#msg12879397

Simple yes/no poll, you can see the results once you vote.

I'm no fan of Dash nor Spoetnik but please stfu already

+1, stop opening this idiotic threads. You're just making a fool of yourself and simultaneously damaging the image of Monero.

Who would pay Spoetnik for his misspelled drunk uncle rants?

I am not talking about him. Talking about DrkLvr_, the idiot who opened this thread.

LOL, I know, I was doubling down on your comment on this thread. I think DrkLvr is letting his enthusiasm for Monero cloud his judgement and isn't an idiot, but is more playing down to the inane accusations leveled at Monero. I'd rather not see baseless supposition met with equal baseless supposition.

Neither do I, but to be honest he is provoking that kind of inane accusations with FUDing and opening these kind of threads. If he would've abstained from that in the first place, other people would not have retorted with those inane accusations.

As I said on reddit:
since their language is Turing-complete it's obvious they can implement everything that can be implemented in other cryptocurrencies (and generally on any computer), so it's a bit of a non-news per se. The interesting question though is what performance/cost do they pay compared to a "native" solution. This is all about trade-off, and that one might be a painful one.

The only trade-off is that it will be possible to tell the coins went through a mixer at one point in time. Works for me.
Monero can't compete with ETH, I'm not sure bitcoin can either.

You forget that fees have to be paid using transparent coins.

Why would that be a problem ? Anyway, do you own research people.

Because a blockchain observer could see which address paid fees to mix his coins. It should also be noted that it's in early alpha stage, see following quote as well:

Quote
# TOTALLY NOT TESTED AND LIKELY BROKEN AT THIS POINT; AWAITING A TEST SUITE

That said, it's an interesting development and it also gives some credibility to the protocol Monero is using.

Can coinmarketcap update clams moneysupply? That number coinmarketcap has is old.

Same with AEON. I wonder how those get updated?

They probably use the API of certain blockexplorers for that.

lol i was confused too  Grin

anyway i want to talk about price: not a lot going on for now, btc correcting and altcoins hanging in the air, undecided what to do.
Big chunk of asks below 160, it will take some effort to bite through this. A retest of the heavily defended 100-110 zone seems possible to me.

40 cents for now in USD terms, there could be a nice possibility for fiat denominated people to get some. but since many currencies did bad against USD..well..

same same but different Grin

I am quite sure that wall of asks is just there to accumulate until 0.9 is released, I could be wrong though.
2416  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 19, 2015, 06:41:37 PM

I was necessarily promoting to buy gold or anything. I was just saying based on the past history, any legit form of currency is backed by gold or silver. When the fiat system collapses, you need some kind of ratio to judge how much something is worth.. I think it will be gold

I think bitcoin is the new benchmark.

You cannot have a commodity basket because they are all manipulated, to my knowledge bitcoin has small manipulation and decreasing volatility.

Despite scammers, looks like the gold certificate scam is far bigger than any crypto scam can imagine to be.

Are you serious? Bitcoin has no volatility as of right now in your opinion? It went from 240 to 500 in less than a month. Gold has its up and downs, but it's kind of hard to manipulate the market with gold as much as Bitcoin. Plus I agree with you that the gold certificates ended up being one huge scam... Though gold doesn't increase in price 100%+ in less than a month either.

How in your mind is price volatility evidence of manipulation? Is it not possible that an asset is simply volatile for no other reason than normal changes in demand or sentiment? (This is not to say that Bitcoin isn't manipulated, but volatility itself doesn't prove it.)

Also, is it not possible that manipulation takes the form of lower volatility?

You simply can't infer that manipulation is going on by merely looking at the volatility.
2417  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 19, 2015, 06:40:43 PM
Prices of all serious coins are going up, why not the price of Monero? I guess it was the wrong decision investing in this coin.

Most coins are either declining or stagnating:

Also, 0.9 is right around the corner, so if I may advise, hold off for a bit and make a new investment evaluation next month.
2418  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: November 19, 2015, 12:32:58 PM
make them use their private pools which we can then shut down with the help of AV and law enforcement...

Go right ahead then. Most of the hash rate is not on identified pools, at least according to the minexmr chart. Maybe there is a better chart, I don't really know.

https://monerohash.com/#network

minexmr currently shows only 2 pools + small + unknown at 61%
while monerohash shows 8 pools + small + unknown at 34%

It's quite peculiar that monero.net shows n/a there, while a few months ago it had 2-3 MH/s of hashrate. Perhaps it went private, who knows.
