So we either bounce now or dive lower I suppose!

We didn't really bounce last bottom (after april 2013 bubble), credits to dnaleor for the pic.

Crossposting:

Monero Client .NET is back with a new release!
v0.39.0-rc.3

Hooray! It's time for me to present a new release of my project. I would like to dedicate it to the core development team, who have been working so hard lately that they broke all the older versions of my client. Cheesy

There are still many things to be improved, but at least, for people who already have an account since v0.38.1, this release will provide stability along with usefulness. I've also tried to implement account file creation, but it seems that the core team has even changed the format of accounts, thus, new account files are not compatible with my software anymore. I'll resume to the newly-appearing issues later, but let's see what was improved in 2015's first .NET client release:

  • Started to utilize the latest stable version of bitmonerod
  • Added indonesian translation
  • Fixed all the shutdown-related bugs (including one which made saving the blockchain impossible)
  • Fixed a menu localization issue

Plans for the future
As you may have already heard, Microsoft is making their .NET Framework's source code open for the public, thus, giving a chance for porting .NET applications to other platforms in the future. That is also a reason behind returning to the development of Monero Client .NET.

I would like to announce a roadmap for those who are still curious about the next things to come.

First of all, I have to tell that v0.39 releases have featured a lot of new technologies in the background. It was the first set of releases to support the "daemonized" bitmonerod and rpcwallet, which are still in a beta development state by the core team. That's the main reason why there wasn't a release of my client which could be labelled fully stable. As it seems to take some time to advance to these new technologies by the core team (merging them with new developments like the embedded blockchain DB or the new account seed generation mechanism), I decided not to continue the development of v0.39 releases, but build a stable v0.40 which returns back to the usage of - the latest - simplewallet and the non-experimental version of bitmonerod.

Further on, this project consists of 2 parts: one which is responsible for the communication with the background workers' RPC interfaces, and one which renders the GUI, utilizing the API subproject. My idea is to separate the 2 subprojects in order to provide .NET developers an easy way to interact with the RPC without the need of implementing JSON data decoders by self. This may even encourage more people to help in project development, and would make it easy to create robust block explorers in ASP.NET (Microsoft's web development platform).

As I have already mentioned sometime before, I'm 17 years old, so I have to study now in order to acquire a great career later. I also have other programming projects to work on, but I do all these things for my own entertainment in my free time. Please bear in mind that it's not easy to keep up with these extra activities I do besides school, so developments will be slower than during the summer.

Enjoy the new release, and donate some XMR to the core development team who made this project exist! Smiley

The biggest reason why Monero cannot and will not be the #1 crypto is because it is developed to be 100% anonymous and untraceable. Lawmakers and regulators will not allow something like that to have widespread mainstream use.

Lawmakers and regulators will just legislate and regulate the on and off ramps and the service providers as they are currently doing with Bitcoin, and have done with cash for years.

Agree, another way is that they could opt to use the viewkey so the transaction is visible. In the same way as the current dev donation adress. If I am wrong about this, please correct me.

fluffypony, tacotime, can you unveil new Monero Monday Missive politics? They will be on regular time basis or not?

It is NOT in written in stone. Just when there is something new to add. Read the last one a few times it is Massive! and will cover half this year! LOL

It was a great document about the past and what's coming up in the future, I personally found it very interesting and helpful. What's missing are timelines, of any kind for 2015. Even something by quarter would be helpful and a positive boost to those who need some justification for holding a coin that has had them "under water" for months now.

Otherwise, extremely well done.

Quoting smooth on this topic:

What about new missive?

Do missives stay officially Monday's or core devs have changed Missives' schedule?

Let's be realistic about it. The Monday schedule has been the exception rather than the rule. Consider the "Monday Monero Missives" to be a bit of alliterary license from here on out.

Missives will be released when we have something ready to report, often weekly, but not always.

If I may give you a tip: You should idle in #monero-dev on freenode. In that way you will really see what kind of work is being done and what is being discussed.

Can someone create a to a step by step guide to creating a cold storage wallet for Monero?

I think it would be helpful for new investors who are uncomfortable keeping XMR on an exchange.

Perhaps separate guides for Windows and Linux with screenshots would be best

It is pretty much the same on all OS.

Mac/Linux: simplewallet --generate-new-wallet wallet-name

Windows: simplewallet.exe --generate-new-wallet wallet-name

(When asked for a password, give a really long random one -- don't worry about remembering it.)

Write down the address and seed words. Double check that you got them right.

Delete the wallet files.

You can do this with an offline computer, and you don't need to be running the daemon (in fact you don't even need the daemon binary installed).

Or use fluffypony's extended guide:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/2dt1h9/definite_guide_to_securely_storing_monero_on_a/
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=583449.msg8246348#msg8246348

Hey everyone,

What security measures do you recommend for your cold storage keys. I was thinking more about measures to prevent hacking/theft of the keys. Should i be paranoid to the point of creating the wallet in an air gap and never look into it until I need it? (Lets not go into the "Ruiu says badBIOS leaps air gaps" territory).

Regarding backup I'm doing the _strongly encrypt your files and stored them in offline and online sources and don't forget the deterministic seed_ routine. If anyone as further thoughts on backup that would be appreciated also.

Remember, rockets are old school. We are going to the moon in a space elevator. Keep calm and get some moar.

Peace!

My suggestion is as follows:

1. Take any machine you have lying around, even your normal workstation. You may find it easier to use an older computer that has no wifi or bluetooth if you're particularly paranoid.
2. Create a Linux or Windows bootable disk, and make sure you have the Monero binaries on the same disk or on a second disk (for Linux make sure you have also downloaded copies of the dependencies you will need, libboost1.55 and miniupnpc for instance).
3. Disconnect the network and/or Internet cables from your machine, physically remove the wifi card or switch the wifi/bluetooth off on a laptop if possible.
4. Boot into your bootable OS, install the dependencies if necessary.
5. Copy the Monero binaries to to a RAM disk (/dev/shm in Linux, Windows bootable ISOs normally have a Z: drive or something)
6. Don't run the Monero daemon. Instead, using the command line, use simplewallet to create a new wallet.
7. When prompted for a name, give it any name, it doesn't really matter.
8. When prompted for a password, type in like 50 - 100 random characters. Don't worry that you don't know the password, just make it LONG.
9. Write down (on paper) your 24 word mnemonic seed.
10. Write down (on your phone, on paper, on another computer, wherever you want) your address and view key.
11. Switch off the computer, remove the battery if there is one, and leave it physically off for a few hours.

There you go - the wallet you've created was created in RAM, and the digital files are now lost forever. If some magical hacker manages to somehow get the data, they will lack the long password to open it. If you need to receive payments, you have the address, and you have the view key if needed. If you need access to it, you have your 24 word seed, and you can now write out several copies of it so that you have an offsite copy (eg. a bank deposit box). Due to the nature of the key you can write it as part of something else - eg. write a fake love letter to your wife so that the 24 words on the left hand side are your key or whatever. Then write a bunch of extra love letters. That way, if your deposit box is ever discovered, it'll be disregarded as unimportant love letters.

There are 8543 coins in the wallet. I can spend ca.40-50% of my working time. if that is ok, I can start next week.
And I'll check the options from other thread about escrow. We need some options and good escrow system with hedging.

Found it, posted 13h ago.

IIRC another 200 XMR has been added to it since this post.

There is now a monero tipbot in #monero, tippero, kindly hosted by fluffypony.

It is coded from scratch, but works in the same way as typical IRC tipbots. See !help and !commands for more info, how to use it, etc.

If you spot any bug, feel free to ping me.

Is it possible to extend this to reddit/twitter etc.? Would be nice to tip some XMR to newcomers on reddit.

Total sum of active swaps: 23,828.11 BTC. Atleast we have some fuel to get back over 300$.

What do you use to track this #?

Huge buys on BFX but USD on the order book remains relatively static. Weird. Dark pool buyer?

What about people closing their shorts?

How do you think Stamp hack will affect bitcoin price when they open trades again?

Will price drops?

TY!

If this was 2013 or earlier, news like BitStamp hack would have caused immediate dumping on all exchanges, but there's only been a slight depress in the price following release of the news. If anything that suggests to me Stamp's reopening will not have any real effect, but who knows.

Maybe we'll have a Gox-like inflation on Bitstamp upon reopening.... but this time, traders on other exchanges may not follow such a rally the way they did on Gox last year.

Is there a thread that discusses the Bitstamp hack at length? What are the facts that we know?

Most info can be found on reddit (www.reddit.com/r/bitcoin). It was speculated on reddit that this (https://blockchain.info/address/1L2JsXHPMYuAa9ugvHGLwkdstCPUDemNCf?offset=0&filter=0) was the hacker's adress. But that adress has, although small, inputs after bitstamp halted trading. So maybe they just moved the coins themselves? The high fees make that questionable however.

3237  Economy / Speculation / Re: Automated posting on: January 04, 2015, 08:56:03 PM

It usually goes like this then: sideway movement -> drop to bottom -> sideway movement -> another drop to make a new bottom. There is no real bouncing like we've seen before..
3238  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 04, 2015, 07:49:04 PM

They are talking about trying to lend 30-40k btc to get btc to gox levels.. (135$). Don't really believe this is true though, but you never know.
3239  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 04, 2015, 01:59:17 PM
Historical moment:

We went below previous all-time high after making a new one.

Keep this in mind when the hyper bulls come out again with their empty promises of "guaranteed growth" based on exponential trend projections in a year or so from now when* the next serious rally takes place.

* "If", if you prefer, but in my opinion, it's more a matter of "when".

Atleast stamp didn't break their previous high (yet)..
3240  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: January 02, 2015, 09:11:42 PM
No it doesn't. If it can't be used for illegal purposes then it's worthless. The point of decentralized crypto is to protect us from unjust laws and allow us to decide for ourselves what is right and what isn't. That's what freedom is all about.

Respectfully disagree. The Bitcoin blockchain is set up to easily allow someone who knows any addresses belonging to you to see who has given you money and where you are sending it. This is unacceptable from a privacy standpoint -- you would never accept a bank publishing all your transactions out in the clear. This is precisely why Monero exists, to be actual virtual cash.

I would like to add this:

Quote from: nullc (gmaxwell)
Privacy is important for many applications.

Do people want to do business using a currency that lets their competition see their customers and their supplies purchases? Where everyone can figure out their payroll or margins?

Likewise, for your personal life... do you want your landlord knowing when you got a raise? The grocery clerk knowing your net worth (and calling in some cat burger friends?). Your neighbours gossipping that you don't give enough to your church or that you spend too much on porn?

In the Bitcoin ecosystem itself, the lack of privacy is a grave systemic risk... Miners can distinguish transactions and discriminate in their processing, and doing so gives them a degree of control over the system which they ought not have, and wouldn't have if transactions were more private.
So, sure, there are also applications for increased transparency using Bitcoin, but you can always layer more transparency on top of a more private system... but not the other way around.

Reddit spends too much time listening folks with fairly extreme political views who view Bitcoin as a tool for advancing those views. I'm glad lots of people find Bitcoin interesting, but those things aren't my interest, and as a tool it can be used in many ways. The tool of privacy is important to everyone, to companies, to individuals, and even to the governments that represent them. Privacy can prevent crime, improve fairness and quality, and generally elevate the human condition. It's a value that everyone can support and a feature that everyone demands, even if they aren't always thinking about it.
