Nice work, jwinterm. Good-looking and functional GUI wallet.
 Cool
I will get around to trying the new GUI soon.

Can you please elaborate on what the version cutoff is for a "deprecated" wallet? (My apologies if it is in the readme or something)

To be honest, I'm not sure, but I think it is basically if you created a wallet in April or May. The current workaround for deprecated wallets is to use v0.8.8.4 to import the keys file and update the wallet, then you can use it in v0.8.8.5/6, but it will be fixed in the next simplewallet release. I'm pretty sure if you have an electrum seed for your wallet, then it's not deprecated.

My compliments on your work. To be clear, this still takes a lot of your RAM or doesn't it?

EDIT: I had to much beers, if I am reading the text correct it shouldn't eat up your RAM. If I can give you some advice, I would make the "tabs" horizontal instead of vertical, bit hard to read now (could be the alcohol, but still Tongue). Another point, if you create a new wallet the seed will be stored in a plain text file without encryption. I would advise to make some kind of announcement everytime you create a new wallet to encrypt to file or to make it a default thing to encrypt the textfile with the seed.
3282  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 14, 2014, 12:13:36 AM
BCN price is easier to keep propped up, because it is doubtful that more than 5% of the supply has ever been in the hands of the public (others than the BCN team).

XMR is more subject to market forces, since the number of people holding more than 1% of the XMR is rather large, and any one of them may decide to call it quits and dump. Similarly the existing, or new, people can buy. Trying to either suppress or pump the price in this environment are losing propositions.

Smartest thing I've heard you say in a month. Welcome back. Wink

Exactly Smiley

Anyway, I have been really busy lately, whatever has come out of the discussion to change the mining rate of Monero?

Nothing has been decided yet AFAIK. I think it's hard to find a consensus on such a thing, so it will probably not be changed.

PS: This is just my personal opinion.

what do you guys think will be the bottom of xmr ?
I Think:    0.00101010

1E-8 as always

Theoretically, but it comes to the bottom under current situation.
My vision is 0.001 holds, if not then new floor 0.0001

0.001 is a very psychological bottom, if that breaks it could get even worse.. @saddam, I agree with your point. A few other members here already brought up that alts are leveraged version, so when btc falls, alts fall even harder. Same goes other way around, just look at how nuts the top alts went in the last bubble..
3284  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Monero officially dead? on: December 10, 2014, 10:15:55 PM
To me it looks like the emission curve is the biggest thing working against an XMR price increase (or sideways move).

It isn't about the high inflation, it is more about the lack of new users (adoption) currently. XMR hit a price of 0.01 twice and inflation was a lot higher then. I personally think that many potential investors are waiting for an official GUI (with Database) before investing a considerable amount, many of them also expected this release a lot earlier. With this in mind, there is a lack of buying which is fueling the current downtrend. I personally think we will see a bulltrend again if the core functions are released.
3285  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 09, 2014, 08:06:49 PM
I'm looking to buy 700 XMR OTC with bitcoin. Any sellers?

Any reason why you don't buy it at poloniex? Would reduce the ask side a bit Tongue

I know lots of people like her followed reptilia ardently, but look where he is now. Somewhere pumping some scamcoin and playing some forum-based medieval kingdom RPG to blend out the dire reality. It's sad.

What's important to understand is that it is way worse to make a bad move than to make no move. The easiest way to do this is realize that there are actually hundreds of opportunities you aren't taking every day, where you are missing out on so much money. It's only that you have a limited scope of attention so you will be only psychologically exposed to some.

"There is the plain fool, who does the wrong thing at all times everywhere, but there is also the Wall Street fool, who thinks he must trade all the time. No man can have adequate reasons for buying or selling stocks daily– or sufficient knowledge to make his play an intelligent play." - Reminiscences of a Stock Operater, a great book.

Why do you think Monero (XMR) is a scamcoin? Please give some proper arguments if you are going to accuse a coin of being a scam.

Andrew Poelstra says:
"The paper will describe some new cryptographic primitives which could be used in a blockchain to avoid explicit linkage between transactions. It certainly does not describe or advocate how to implement such things in Bitcoin. Indeed, this would dramatically change the efficiency and privacy properties of Bitcoin in ways that would be unacceptable to many existing users."

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2oh7vq/toward_unlinkable_bitcoin_transactions_andrew/cmn952n

If Maxwell and Poelstra are a) interested enough in CN tech to start writing a paper on it, and b) they realize CN tech has almost no chance of being implemented in bitcoin, then maybe they'll start directly working on the best CN coin around.  Grin

Pretty sure they've already been working on it on some level as independent contractors/consultants. Just not publicly(pseudonyms maybe for ethical reasons?). And even if they haven't done any actual 'work' related to CN stuff they' appear to have taken an academic interest in the tech months ago.

Look at the comments and you'll find the answer Tongue

(b) Yes, I have. (Arguably I am one of their experts.) Edit: To clarify, I did do my own independent audit of the Bytecoin signature scheme. I concluded that their sucurity argument was sound. I've been in contact with the Monero research team and we have discussed this among other things.

Question was:

Quote from: BinaryFate
b) As you correctly point out, the initial analysis on security in the cryptonote white paper is light, and their authors completely (not just "somewhat" as you gently write it...) discredited. Nevertheless the Monero team did a very thorough evaluation of the crypto involved in the protocol, by hiring several academic cryptographers/mathematicians to do the auditing. Have you been in touch with the experts involved, or have you done your own evaluation from scratch without considering this previous work?

1W MACD on all exchanges turned green... There will be a green christmas this year  Grin

Edit: Someone removed for 3k bids on finex? There was more than 8k to 400$ and now is 5k.

Price has to stay in this area or above to really close green, so don't get overexcited.

I noticed this as well. On the other hand, support is growing Cheesy

It will be interesting to see whether Bitcoin can adopt CN functionality. It would a win for privacy and freedom, but bad for my XMR investment: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2oh7vq/toward_unlinkable_bitcoin_transactions_andrew/

Can BTC dev team add ring signatures without having to fork?

That topic was discussed in the comments:

Quote from: andytoshi

This is the reason Monero has many chances of catching up in the future, there is no way Bitcoin will be hardforked to add ring-signatures by default, as satoshi himself said, its already set in stone (the code).

I really liked to read that discussion on reddit, thanks for sharing.

Same here, there were some nice comments in it. I like this particular one from Gregory Maxwell about privacy:

Quote from: nullc (gmaxwell)
Privacy is important for many applications
Do people want to do business using a currency that lets their competition see their customers and their supplies purchases? Where everyone can figure out their payroll or margins?

Likewise, for your personal life... do you want your landlord knowing when you got a raise? The grocery clerk knowing your net worth (and calling in some cat burger friends?). Your neighbours gossipping that you don't give enough to your church or that you spend too much on porn?

In the Bitcoin ecosystem itself, the lack of privacy is a grave systemic risk... Miners can distinguish transactions and discriminate in their processing, and doing so gives them a degree of control over the system which they ought not have, and wouldn't have if transactions were more private.

So, sure, there are also applications for increased transparency using Bitcoin, but you can always layer more transparency on top of a more private system... but not the other way around.

Reddit spends too much time listening folks with fairly extreme political views who view Bitcoin as a tool for advancing those views. I'm glad lots of people find Bitcoin interesting, but those things aren't my interest, and as a tool it can be used in many ways. The tool of privacy is important to everyone, to companies, to individuals, and even to the governments that represent them. Privacy can prevent crime, improve fairness and quality, and generally elevate the human condition. It's a value that everyone can support and a feature that everyone demands, even if they aren't always thinking about it.[/b]

Also, this conversation is defenitely worth mentioning:

Oh that's right you don't have one. You contribute nothing to the project other than FUD. (Want to buy lower do you?) Carry on.

Incompetent developers, i hope you did not make one cent off monero. Why ? Because you suck a**.

I'd be willing to donate 5k xmr to a reputable team of 2-3 new devs to work on the gui and json...

If you are in the monero-dev channel on IRC you will actually see that a lot of work is being done. Give me a proper reason to flame the devs?

No action in monero-dev for some time now, what are you f.. talking about.. Oh,  amonth ago onishin, fr pool owner, refused to update to the latest version because the code was so fucking broken.. Anyway, I mine at 600KH/s - at a huge loss. If i stop now, the network is almost completely at the mercy of the botnet herders..

Just have a look here to see current developments: https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/

They are working hard on the project, mostly part time and for free (even covering expenses out of their own pocket). Also, they are not familiar with the new code and have to clean up a lot of code taken from bytecoin. Guys like you are no good for the community, please have some patience and give the devs their time to release everything properly. I'd rather wait a few more months/weeks and have a proper working GUI/DB etc. than some half working stuff. If you feel that the dev's are going to slow, why not help them yourself?

Inflation kills this coin. Is not it clear?

...temporally.
The inflation doesn't last forever.

I'm not that in to Monero. Can anyone link to facts about the coin?
I have tried to google info about inflation but haven't found anything.

Is Monero "limited" like BTC, or does it have infinite "minting" of new coins?

I would advise to read the links posted here above and why monero matters in this post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=721045.msg8477489#msg8477489 (this thread also provides a FAQ)

Inflation can be found here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=702140.msg8106443#msg8106443
As stated in the OP about the amount of coins: [2] Actual number of atomic units is M = 264 - 1. A minimum subsidy may be implemented in the future with <1% inflation to preserve mining incentives. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=583449.0). Important IRC channels are in the OP as well.

If you need any more info feel free to ask (via PM is no problem as well). I hope some other members can add some important links.

Does anybody know what's the hash rate of Monero vs Boolberry, as well as how many miners in both (miner distribution graph?)?

Since they have a different mining algorithm you can't compare the hashrates (don't know for sure). Please correct me if I am wrong.
3295  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 05, 2014, 02:59:00 PM
Don;t get it how second market can buy 127k - on auction was only 50k btc

If the highest bidders of secondmarket also outbid the other bidders they will receive the 50k BTC and divide this between their highers bidders.
3296  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: December 05, 2014, 02:56:04 PM
Monero XMR / BTC   0.00116
I'm in panic.
Sell or wait?

Did the fundamentals change? If you invested for the long time based on the fundamentals it would be irrational to sell then and you should have known that altcoins have a lot of volatality. If you can't handle the volatality you probably invested to much. I am not a trader, so can't give an opinion on short term.
3297  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 05, 2014, 02:52:07 PM
If someone bid 1$ for all of those coins that alone is 50k "in bids"

Like secondmarket would even accept such a ridiculous bid. I think most of the bids are not far of the market price, maybe -20% max.

Re directbet add, what does he mean by API? Hopefully we can get on there soon, would be fun if nothing else.

While Monero has most of the votes, we believe that it is still a bit premature for direct betting purposes.

The main reason is because the API is not yet finalized. Another reason is that the official wallet does not yet have a GUI.

That being said, we're monitoring its progress and hope to be able to accept it soon.

Meanwhile, please do continue to share your thoughts on which other altcoin we should add.

We're seriously considering accepting additional coins and your feedback has been valuable for us. Thanks.

I guess a GUI with API for automating transactions (bets), just like you use an exchange API for a sell/buy bot. I hope devs can extend on this topic, because my knowledge is limited.

Is anyone in team working on Monero usage online?
I mean, I wanna buy a domain name with Monero, I wanna pay hosting with Monero, I want to buy a phone with Monero ... dating, gambling... so many options.
Monero is very good alt coin, but if there is no usage, value is equal to zero.
Only mine and sell or just keep? Why?

The community needs the client to have the GUI/DB done before XMR is ready for prime time.

The upside is that you can still get cheap XMR while the foundation for the ground floor is being built.

We have MyMonero service for wallet online - simple and clean - no need to update anything, so you can mine direct to it, as well to spend from it.

I think he meant that we need a GUI/DB (with API) before someone can start some kind of payment processor to fulfill your wishes about paying for things with monero.
