I know this topic has been covered before, but I'm asking the Monero community to please consider changing the name to something more descriptive of what the coin does.

Many of the most recognisable brands in the world don't have descriptive names, and are awash in a sea of competition. "Apple" makes computers, "Nike" makes sportswear, "Amazon" sells stuff online, "Ford" makes cars, "Verizon" is mobile phone service provider. Even amongst software projects "Firefox" is a browser, "Skype" is for video calling, "Dash" is for offline software development documentation search, "Eclipse" is an IDE.

If everything had a descriptive brand name you'd use your "SlickComputers" laptop to buy a pair of "AwesomeSneakers" shoes from "OnlineRetailer" before hopping in my "AmericanCars" truck and making a call using the "LargePhoneNetwork" network. Then when I'm on my computer I can fire up "OpenSourceBrowser" before using "VideoCaller" to check-in with my wife, all while the convenient "DarkDocumentation" system helps me code in "CodeWriterEnvironment".

+1. I'm personally against a rename, I find the name "Monero" quite nice Smiley

Agree too, not having coin or cash in its name was also one of the reasons for me to invest.
3102  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: XMR vs DRK on: March 29, 2015, 08:59:49 PM
{snip}

my point is whole Monero project is basically a marketing scam and the GUI thing is just a tiny example of how your devs don't deliver on their promises (the most important factor in investing in a digital currency).  I am not saying this as a drk investor, if i was trying to troll i would be pouring all the research i did especially on NSA-Cryptonote involvement on the Monero thread. but I ain't.  I got scammed last year on Mintpal and started my own investigation, the only reason I researched Monero was because i was just reading Monero FUD for 5 days solid on the DRK thread and thought 'that is obviously a scam, do a bit of research so you can counter what they are saying' - i'm obviously not getting through, so wasting my time here Smiley

Did you even bother to read the citation link? Here
https://forum.getmonero.org/1/news-announcements-and-editorials/190/editorial-why-is-the-official-gui-wallet-not-released-yet

And as you can see in that thread I made note of the change when the change was made. There is nothing going on in this coin that is not above board and transparent. If you think it is a marketing scam then don't buy in. You are of course in the minority as the world is starting to wake up to Monero's potential.

AFA NSA involvement, please explain this to me, it's ok if you use big words I can google them. Why don't you start with the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EdDSA and go from there. Gotta Love twisted Ed curves rite?

i'm done with my free XMR due dilligance thanks - I already posted 3 times about the NSA involvement, read those maybe so i don't have to repeat myself which then people can say is trolling?

also not sure about the 'world waking up to xmr' - you probably want big exchanges like Bittrex and BTER to wake up first instead of Scamoniex with it's full time XMR 'price protection' team that lives in the trollbox....without which i estimate XMR market cap at ~$200k

(again, not trolling - this should be a BIG RED FLAG. but i feel like I am probably banging my head against a brick wall again...)

Poloniex makes up around 66% of the total XMR volume, whereas Cryptsy takes up above 70% of the Dash volume. Your post, again, makes no sense at all.
3103  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: XMR vs DRK on: March 29, 2015, 07:57:04 PM

yup.  all 'third party'.  I already quizzed 'smooth' on it.

if XMR users want to use a mouse, 'just go get a wallet from someone else'.

Looks to me like another example of how charlatan XMR devs can't be bothered to even meet their own timescales.  Instead they are busy trolling, asking for donations (or not knowing where past donations went), editing Wikipedia to cover up their non-delivery.   oh and preaching how cryptographic proof implies system security and blurb on how XMR "isn't about the money" to the faithful while some group is manipulating the price on poloniex every day.  And trying to cover up the fact they cut and paste a sh*t load of NSA tech from multiple sources. apart from that, XMR is all great Cheesy

(guys seriously, i know you love XMR and this whole thread is setup to show that, but doesn't this all show you that something is dodgy here, really?)

As I told Toknormal, you're also impying that anything by 3rd parties shows some type of incompetance? So Bitcoin's entire infrastructure shows it's incompetance? Do you realize that these things are supposed to be open-sourced, decentralized? Oh no, because Dash/DRK was closed-source for most of it's lifetime, has a scam/dishonest instamine that's partly covered up(It's not on the wikipedia page), has a guy named Masternode and Otoh who directly manipulate the prices worst than anything I've seen before in Crypto, has masternodes that ultimately centralize the network and provide an irrelevant "feature" that Bitcoin already superbly provides(Coinjoin), has a developer that changed the name from Darkcoin to Dash without a vote or anything democratic, and who also owns a "spork switch" which further centralized Dash/DRK.

Shall I name more?

just diversion, again.

Monero devs said 7 months ago the GUI was a priority.  March 2015 they still haven't done it (apart from the donations screen) so they just go and 'memory hole' the wikipedia entry that shows they couldn't be bother to do it (and now everyone is saying 'hey we never needed a GUI it's such a small point'.  That's called broken promise and illustrates my point that Monero is basically a marketing scam with a load of well-intentioned nerds believing literally anything that comes from the parapet about XMR is some holy investment that doesn't involve greed and everyone else is stupid - doesn't wash with me mate Wink

The GUI was moved to a lesser priority after they said they'll be working on more important things, especially since there are already 5 other GUI's available. Your coming off as a obvious troll now if this is the best you can come up with.

Why dont you go and ask Evan why he didn't relaunch Dash/DRK after the instamine scam where he and a few others mined over 2million Dash/DRKs on a linux only release, then cut the block reward and coin supply by over half to instantly make those instamined coins more valuable, all while at that time, Dash/DRK had no future goals was just a random Bitcoin clone? You should maybe do that instead of trolling.

If I recall correctly, the blockattack (202612) was the reason devs shifted priorities and realized other core-features had to be worked on first before they can safely release the official GUI.

Wasn't there talk of the feature to import funds into mymonero by using just the deterministic seed? Is this integrated now and if so does anyone know how to do so?

Yes there is and it is currently working:

Quote
MyMonero has added existing wallet import functionality. Just use your 25 word mnemonic from simplewallet when logging in, and after paying the 10 XMR once-off fee your wallet will be available in MyMonero.

More info can be found here:

https://getmonero.org/2015/03/09/monero-missive-for-the-week-of-2015-03-09.html

That's two now. You need a donation address, friend!

You're welcome!

If you intend to donate some to me, please forward it to the devs donation adress:

Funds will, in my opinion, get a more appropriate use then Smiley

PS: If anyone wants to donate to the dev fund in general, more info about it can be found here -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=700400.0

I was thinking about it and realized the latest missive wasn't even crossposted here. So here it is:

https://forum.getmonero.org/1/news-announcements-and-editorials/245/monday-monero-missives-27-march-23rd-2015

Quote from: MONDAY MONERO MISSIVES #27 - MARCH 23RD, 2015

To download the podcast directly please use this link to the MP3 , or this link to the AAC/MP4 , or this link to the FLAC .

A brief summary of the points discussed follows, a full transcription of the podcast is outstanding (can be submitted via Github Issues).

In this week's podcast we discuss the new blockchain utilities in preparation for their final merge.

1. blockchain_converter converts between database types, right now its only job is to convert from the old in-RAM system to an lmdb database. It chews memory, though, as it has to keep the blockchain in RAM as well as the lmdb driver.

2. blockchain_export takes the default database (set at compile time) and exports it to a blockchain.raw file. This is the file we're going to make available for download as the blockchain bootstrap in future.

3. blockchain_import imports from the blockchain.raw file into whatever database format (specified at runtime, the default database is specified at compile time). It allows you to import with verification off for the fastest possible speed, specify LMDB options, and specify a batching count for loading in chunks.

Until next week!

I know the devs encourage us to use the official forum, hence why the missive is posted there, but I still think it's better for awareness and visibility to also crosspost it here.

I have a strange issue that occurred while sending out xmr from mymonero to poloniex the other day, which has left me wondering where several thousand of my xmr have disappeared to....

The amount sent from mymonero does not correspond to the amount reported by moneroblocks when searching with the payment ID, which in turn does not correspond to the amount received by poloniex. From mymonero to poloniex there is a discrepancy of -4000 xmr...

Where do I start to figure out what is going on here?

I would advise to contact Fluffypony (owner of MyMonero) on IRC, since it's much easier to communicate on there than using bitcointalk. If you are not familiar with IRC, just use this link -> http://webchat.freenode.net/. Set your nickname and set the channel to #monero, you could ask openly for him in the channel or just sent him a personal message (use /query fluffypony or just press on his nick). If you are familiar with irc just join #monero on freenode. The issue will probably be resolved soon if you get in touch with him.

PS: He is probably sleeping right now, but should be online tomorrow. Good luck with resolving your issue!
3108  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 28, 2015, 10:07:40 PM
I'll just leave this here one more time...

Nearly none of the miners mining MONERO are dumping.

Do you know why? It is because it is:
1. Unprofitable to dump (Electricity costs > Mining revenue)
2. If free electricity, they could just mine WhirlpoolX algo coins and make 40% more money.
3. People that are mining Monero are mining one of the least profitable coins to mine.

Miner inflation is non-existent. Another +1 for Monero.

This doesn't make any sense.
Why are someone bothering to mine at loss?
My advice for any miner mining Monero at loss is to find a coin they can mine with profit, dump that coin and buy Monero instead. This strategy brings more Moneros for this particular miner.

Probably because they believe in the future of Monero (and thus a higher price), it's basically the same many Bitcoin miners did in the past and even currently.
3109  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: March 28, 2015, 09:06:38 PM
Please could someone help with some questions I have.  I'm just getting started with XMR.

When a wallet is described at https://moneroeconomy.com/news/choose-your-wallet as doing "remote node", what is this more analogous to: a bitcoin wallet which uses the RPC interface and believes the results, or an SPV bitcoin client?  I don't know if the SPV concept maps over into Monero.  But is it possible to have a wallet mode of operation with Monero where just block headers and our own transactions are verified?

My bitmonerod is currently downloading the blockchain and it's going to take a while.  If there was an SPV-alike mode available so I could get on and have a play with balances and sending transactions, that would be great.

You can use jwinterm's lightweight wallet or Jojatekok's wallet since they bot rely on the remote node. Using these wallets you basically rely on someone else running the deamon (hence remote node), in this way you won't have to run the deamon, synchronize it and store the blockchain. Furthermore, the wallet will not use your RAM significantly like the Qt GUI does. Running this wallet allows you to play with balances and sending transactions. I hope this answer was sufficient for you.

Regarding your other questions, I will leave this open to the more technically known members regarding that subject.

Monero has view keys to allow transparency.

Thats the problem - not the solution.

Care to give your reasoning? No problems arise from Viewkeys, they provide a harmony of sorts between having anonymity and allowing transparency to those you wish.

As we are talking about viewkeys, I figured this graphical representation might be useful:

PS: Toknormal, if you are going to state something, please properly argument it atleast.

Ive been on this forum since 2010 and i have a total of 14 people on my ignore list, since 2010! I cant even imagine how many people are on the ignore list of people THIS sensitive. (interestingly icebreaker is one of the lucky 14)

Perhaps you should have made yourself a model of resilience and set a better example for the noobs, instead of being so delicate and sensitive?

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.   Wink

I am assuming that you wrote this for consumption and digestion by everyone except Anon136, as he can't read it, seeing as how you are on his ignore list.

People dont read posts that are too long.
Quite the opposite, at least in my case. I long noticed a strongly (but not absolute) positive correlation between the length of a post and its usefulness.

Spoenick (or however it's spelled) Not withstanding rite? Smiley

There is always some room for error :p
3113  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 26, 2015, 04:52:23 PM
Guess I'll just have to wait for the next whale dump to get back in.

Whales are accumulating. The miners dump. I don't rule out a miner dump but in this environment with brisk demand that is pretty needless.

If I needed to sell 50k, it would not be hard to do. And if I needed to sell my produce, there would be no need to accumulate 50k before selling.

These are clearly evident in the recent days when lows have been rising quicker than the highs.

There will always be a whale dump to accumulate lower. You know this. Sometimes it will even cause panic selling. Wait didn't we just go through one of those?

The slope of the retracements is getting more and more gentle with every rise though.

Thanks, thats what i was looking for. Not once was it posted on this thread...
Doesnt look good at first glance, actually looks terrible...

EDIT : Its beyond terrible, why are donators not starting a fire already to burn the scammer who collected 30BTC worth of monero to write a few lines of code in three months ?!?

Probably not all coding is done on github. However, this is just my thought. I, for a fact, did not invest in it and thus unfortunately can't tell you how the project is progressing.

It is a public project.
The information is public. No I'm not going to help you find it.

Monero community deserves better. You are one lousy core dev.

Maybe if I were a 'reputable developer' and you weren't an obnoxious troll, things might be different between us. sniff sniff

You pull the troll card out of your ass too often. Not working anymore.

Ethereum launch is getting closer and closer. If they gain enough liquidity and allow xmr/btc decentralized exchange then I can imagine lot of dirty bitcoins are going to seek a new home in a safe exchange for always untainted new anonymous crypto like Monero.

Ethereum if successful could really increase the global liquidity in the whole crypto once people are allowed to trade without the counter party and security risk of centralized exchanges.

It would mean increasing the velocity of money which leads to inflation. Altcoins should rise.

Correct thinking? I guess Monero and Ethereum is still a bit a distant future Cheesy

but this could be a closer future (mercury exchange)

In addition, Atrides is also working on an Openbazaar version for XMR.

Monero is trending up nicely. IMO monero is currently the number one anon coin. I'm just scared of zerocash...

Why are you scared of it? I have even not heard about it. What is its marketcap?
The rise of DRK coin is a serious threath to Monero (yes, it has been argued it is insta/fastmine - but honestly people do not care about it - only us who are geeks are caring about it).
I do not own any DRK (unfortunately) and I am not planning to hold it as the train has left the station in this coin IMO (marketcap is ~ 5 times higher than XMR and DRK is approaching LTC).
Should we start a war agains DRK (perhaps shorting it to the bottomless pit...?). I guess in Bitfinex it is possible to short DRK if I am not mistaken...? Is it a smart thing to do?

This is unfortunately not possible at the moment.
