Tails plz - friends 1980. To remain completely off-topic: "Tails" reminds me inevitably of hours and days of Sonic Adventure 1 + 2 on Dreamcast, years ago. Do the youngsters on these boards even know what a Dreamcast was? Cool

To remain completely on-topic: Great idea and great format OP, curious to see how this will turn out. Oh, and great gift!

463  Economy / Speculation / Re: [WO] Rent from the bank via an intermediary, rent directly from the bank—or...? on: November 19, 2020, 02:31:50 PM
How can it be considered wiser to rent from an individual owner as opposed to 'renting' from the bank - you'd be obliged to either one and both could theoretically kick you out for non-payment.

How about, um, owning your own home?  As in:  Free and clear.

What a nice society you have:  The “American dream” of home ownership is truly dead, out of reach and unthinkable to the overwhelming majority of Americans.  It has been replaced by an illusion based on a false dichotomy between renting from the bank via an intermediary “landlord” who rents from a bank, and renting directly from the bank.

The banks own everything!  You are so immersed in debt culture based on debt-“backed” money and total submission to the banks, you cannot even see what is wrong with your proposition.

Bitcoin, and home ownership:  Be your own bank.  Be the king of your castle.

"The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks"
😼 Bitcoin Core (onion)

Don’t get me started on the rents known as “property taxes”.  Are you even aware of how recent a development that is in the United States?

See also:
Historically, besides heritable class status, the single most effective guarantor of voter quality was a real property ownership requirement.  [...]

Naturally, I think that such a requirement must logically exclude mortgaged properties, which (especially in today’s society) are effectively rented from the bank.

Well my wife and I own our home "free and clear".
But we have to pay property taxes on the mofo.
So a mortgage free home is nice but not as free and clear as one may think.

With covid-19 and my home state pretty much tapped out I am sure property taxes will 2x in under 10 years.

So go btc go!

If you have enough on the side to not have to work any more, is anything keeping you from moving to a country where there's no or lower property tax? Friends, family, children maybe? If not, I wouldn't hesitate, mate.

@^^^ Easy. Just buy a PATA-to-USB adapter. They come complete with PSU, and should cost no more than $10. Warning: don't purchase with BTC!

And, yes, it would make a great story.

There's a lot coming back to me now. I distinctly remember my room mate warning me this software was a recipe for viruses and problems (edit: not a lot has changed, come to think of it) Grin

Thx for the tip. Wink i'll check it out right away Cheesy
465  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 19, 2020, 01:28:58 PM

@JJG whilst writing my reply to your post I realized I have my old PC tower from years ago still standing here hardly a few meters away from me in my office.

I am 100% certain there's BTC (and probably also LTC) mining software on this drive as I remember playing with it at the time. I am however not 100% certain if there's any BTC or LTC on this thing and - even though it's been years ago - I'd probably remember if there was. Roll Eyes Internet at the student dorm was a pain in the buttocks at that time.

Now how am I going to bring this dinosaur to life on a MX Linux laptop... Cool

I won't get my hopes up too high, but damn wouldn't that make a great story.

So, yeah, there may be some differing comfort levels based on starting points and also based on my having had stacked up earlier than you.. perhaps?

Exactly. I've probably told this before but at the time I learned about BTC, I was a student with no money to invest. And once I was at the point of being able to "afford to lose", we were already at "now or never" mid-2017 prices. I would be stupid to claim not wishing to have a bag of BTC on the side now (although I only want enough to have the freedom of not having to work as opposed to Lambos and champagne Wink), but I sincerely can't regret not having taken such investment risks at a time when I could hardly put some spare money aside.

Hm?  So you are saying that you have been meticulous with your household income over the past 3 years, and you have also been buying BTC over the past 3 years but you still were NOT able to get enough lilly fiends?  I am not trying to impose the conditions of anyone else upon you.. that's for sure.. so there are likely exceptions and maybe my comment to you was a wee bit too harsh?  Perhaps?

I'll be more careful in my smiley selection next time, before I give the impression I actually seriously would love to see BTC price go down to $100 to buy more. Cool So nope, no regrets here. But buying more at this moment + at the current price is something I would indeed not define as meticulous investment. Would be a different story should market cap continue to increase in the next few days and weeks...

you still were NOT able to get enough lilly fiends?

edit: I'll NEVER have enough of those Wink
468  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Cryptopia Judge: "1. Crypto is property 2. Even w/o keys, crypto remains yours" on: November 19, 2020, 11:32:45 AM
I think forks are a bit of a special case, because it's a completely separate entity that decides to give assets to crypto hodlers. It creates all kinds of problems, not just legal ones. An exchange has a cold wallet for exemple, where you want it to have a significant amount of assets, in a secure way. Each time there is a fork/airdrop like that, it would need to risk that cold wallet's keys to be able to access the new coins.

Your point of view was confirmed in this judgment a few months ago, which stated: "The Court would be imposing a major new duty on all cryptocurrency exchanges (...) to affirmatively honor every single bitcoin fork."

Indeed, having to give access to forked coins would be too much of a duty/obligation (and risk?) for an exchange. So if you want your fork, leave the coins on your own wallet. If I remember well, this advice was also clearly communicated at the time when BCH, BCA, BTX, BTCP, BTG, LCC, and the other Fork Families launched.

Oh! Had forgotten this kiwi attempt to fly lol.

The yank 'legal' system is meanwhile getting there https://decrypt.co/39574/not-your-keys-not-your-coins-enshrined-in-us-case-law-says-lawyer

albeit about forks not hacks, but it is a start.

As promised and said before, in the meantime, I've also added my analysis of the decision in appeal you're quoting about, which imo in no way did say "not your keys, not your coins".

Fixed

Facts, math and science and such, all quite fine by me, but it might be helpful to share some sources from time to time, because predictions like this one won't convince anyone here

All are just speculations. Nobody can predict the future correctly. Besides, I cannot see Bitcoin going back to $10,000 before the end of this year

I'll predict the future. Bitcoin won't be $10,000 ever again.

471  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Price increase = scam increase - BE CAREFUL, friends on: November 19, 2020, 09:26:43 AM
There might be something psychological going on here, people who get into Bitcoin at the times like these, where price skyrockets and sets new highs every day, they are so amazed by this that they lose all their critical thinking and fall victim of things like coin doublers. which they wouldn't do if it was a fiat currency that they are used to. Newbies don't understand that Bitcoin's decentralized and pseudonymous nature means that you should be extremely careful with every transaction that you make, there's no way to return your money once you have sent them.

Exactly. Here's another recent one, again in the Dutch local boards. At the moment we've got more investment proposals than active members in the Dutch boards Grin

Guy offers to buy BTC for fiat. He's got only 6 posts, mostly in Russian, no Trust, no Merit etc. Impossible to prove he's a scammer, of course, but it's nonetheless fishy as hell.
472  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 19, 2020, 09:18:18 AM
Not selling anything until $50k. I hedl for 2 extra years since the price was $20k so this extra hodling time should be properly remunerated.  Cool

Selling is not my concern right now. "When can we buy more?", is what I'm thinking atm Lips sealed

You have had nearly 3 years to buy MOAR... so difficult to know what to say... atm...

sucks to NOT have been adequately and sufficiently pee pared for UPpity, no?

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Ha Grin my household budget is calculated in an extremely orthodox way. Not a single penny that I cannot afford to lose, will be lost in this family, no matter how high or low BTC prices are Wink

Come on JJG, help the guy out.

Would I love to see BTC go to $100, just to see how PayPal would shit their pants with their IOUs.

474  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A gambler living in England makes a $5M bet on Trump on: November 18, 2020, 04:15:17 PM
This is a huge amount of money  to whom will be the winner of the game. The game is not yet over till on the 20 of November the real winner will take over the seat or remain in the seat. Any gambler that will win this bet of $5m will like to relax for a while before betting again because of the amount of money involve  .many gambler are seriously worry about the bet just the way the game is going  at this moment that is causing everyone fear not to lose the bet.

Do you actually want to share something useful to this thread and with this community, or are you just trying to get your activity up by posting stuff about gamblers who "will like to relax" and "are worried" and such? Both options are fine by me, but I think you should at least try and be sincere about it. One of your other posts talks about "it's good because it's good while it's good" and stuff. I know few posters who use so much words whilst saying absolutely nothing. Respect mate!

Back on-topic, though:

Trump has announced to go all the way, meaning this case will probably be passed on to the Supreme Court, and that could take several weeks. I'm afraid it won't change a lot for the gambler OP was posting about, because the result is clear I guess, even for Trump's supporters. I'm glad not to be in the gambler's shoes anyway, because his agony and feeling of "you never know" will only be prolonged for several weeks now...
475  Local / Markt / Re: Ik wil BTC kopen contant in Helmond 50-300 euro. on: November 18, 2020, 03:52:38 PM

Cool Scam risk.

477  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Now or wait? on: November 18, 2020, 03:30:07 PM
clifjw, I haven't bought for a very long time even though I've been in this community for over 3 years - and have always been active during this whole time. Nonetheless, I have exactly the same questions and doubts as you do. Just like you, I'm a very careful investor. That's not necessarily a matter of being poor, it's rather a very realistic question of not wanting to lose the money I've been working hard for, every day of my professional life.

As I said, I've been here on almost a daily basis for over 3 years, and I confirm 100% what several posters have said before me: the BTC price has been increasing extremely rapidly for several days and weeks now. A correction will come soon certainly, but when, and at which price point, well.... even people who have years of experience with BTC and TA or FA will probably admit they're not 100% sure.

So all I can do, is tell you what "my simple plan" is: I'm waiting for a correction before buying more (for the first time in over 1 year, by the way). But I must admit that, just like you, for the first time in years I'm experiencing FOMO. Being a hodler, that's quite confrontational tbh. Smiley

edit: by the way, welcome to this community
(it's a refreshment and takes a bit of time getting used to seeing a newbie who doesn't post about Merit Grin)
478  Other / Beginners & Help / Price increase = scam increase - BE CAREFUL, friends on: November 18, 2020, 03:12:45 PM
At first, I was planning to post this in my DYOR thread, but when I noticed this scam risk on the Dutch local board, I changed my mind as it seemed more appropriate to start a new thread for this.

Current prices are luring in many scammers to these boards.

Even if you have only recently discovered Bitcoin or only recently taken the step of investing in crypto, please DO NOT LET YOURSELF BE SEDUCED by these getting-rich-fast schemes. Don't let frustrations about being a late investor, cloud your judgment. That is exactly what these scammers are anticipating. But these offers are simply untrue, and at current prices, the only true risk is getting-poor-fast!

There's a very easy way to think soberly about these interesting business proposals.

Before accepting an offer that's too good to be true, just ask yourself this simple question: why would people want to share their part of the cake at the time when crypto prices are reaching all-time highs?

479  Local / Markt / Re: Passief Inkomen via Ethereum (Onroerend Goed) 6% per jaar on: November 18, 2020, 02:55:17 PM

Quote as proof.

WARNING SCAM & SPAM RISK

Gezien de huidige hoge prijzen voor BTC, ETH enz. zullen dergelijke aanbiedingen in de komende dagen en weken schering en inslag zijn.
