562  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Progress Happens: The Case of Bitcoin on: June 21, 2014, 03:20:13 PM
A nice read. However I do not agree with that part:

Quote
There is no real shortcut to this process. We Bitcoiners think we know where the market is headed. It gets frustrating for us that it is not there already. But if you think about it, we are only 5 years into this process, and the progress is actually amazing.

For me it's not frustrating. Progress in adoption is actually happening surprisingly fast. I'm afraid that adoption is too fast for technology to keep up pace.
It's important to have a sound technological base. That's more important than speed of adoption.
563  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will Bitcoin reach a similar Facebook "S-curve" on: June 21, 2014, 02:58:29 PM
Don't compare a new network to a new service on a previous network. A better comparison would be bitcoin vs internet and bitcoin is doing just fine Smiley

I agree. Bitcoin is new technology, Facebook wasn't. Much more infrastructure has to be build to enable Bitcoin for mass adoption. Facebook will turn out to be a fad looking back ten years from now, but it offered a simple mass-adoption compatible interface from day one.

Bitcoin encompasses more and much more relevant use cases than Facebook. It's both more complex and more useful, so it needs more time to reach S-curve-growth.
564  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you sometimes think Bitcoin will fail? on: June 21, 2014, 02:40:06 PM
I think Bitcoin can still fail. But if it does, I think it will be out of totally different reasons than those mentioned frequently (confirmation times, complexity, gov. ban), because these potential problems are already addressed.
If Bitcoin fails I think it will be most likely due to a software bug or malicious code introduced by a corrupt developer that remains unnoticed until damage is done.

That said, I'm still getting more confident every day that bitcoin will succeed.
565  Economy / Economics / Re: Why did removing the silver content of coins not affect their fungibility? on: June 21, 2014, 01:50:40 PM
changing the silver content turned the coins into fiat

I would say the coins were fiat money when they were introduced (metal content less than nominal value), and the money supply expansion reduced the value of the money unit, until it were smaller than the commodity value of the silver coins, making them commodity money. It happened in Italy with copper coins. The coins disappeared, and you got diverse candy as change in the shops.

Correct. Almost all silver coins issued in the 20th century as general circulation coins had a higher nominal value than the value of the contained metal when they were issued. It's inflation by so called "quantitative easing" (a modern euphemism) that made these coins commodity money. You can find multiple modern examples for copper/bronze and nickel coins disappearing from circulation because of the same reasons. Pick a coin catalogue that lists weight and metal compositions of recent circulation coins and compare nominal value to the current trade value of the metals contained, then you'll know which coins will likely become commodity money in the near future and adjust the coin composition of your cash reserve accordingly... Cheesy

With each new coin issue the material value is reduced and/or the nominal value is increased. That's a much more solid indicator of inflation/currency devaluation than any official statistic on the matter.
566  Local / Presse / Re: Änderung des Bitcoin - Protokolls vorgeschlagen! on: June 20, 2014, 02:38:15 PM

567  Economy / Economics / Re: Why did removing the silver content of coins not affect their fungibility? on: June 20, 2014, 02:18:41 PM
Officially all coins regardless of their composition remained fully fungible simply because the law stated that they had to be accepted. It is an entirely different question which kind of coins people preferred to accept in order to hold (hoard) them. But this preference had no real influence on fungibility because law forced people to accept non-silver coins as legal payment.
568  Economy / Economics / Re: Recommend me some low-risk inflation beating investments. on: June 20, 2014, 01:52:24 PM
In order to sell your trees you will need to spend some amount of money in order to cut down, transport and sell the trees.

Yes, but such costs are only significant if your stake of forest is really tiny. People tend to underestimate the value of natural wood - at least in Europe prices have surged greatly. Even simple firewood is valuable - and you don't have to cut down entire trees to collect that.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Looks like I've got some research to do, also need to think how liquid I need the investment to be...

The forest idea sounds fun, I had thought of buying land, but ruled it out as most standard plots of land (big enough to build a house on) are too pricey for me. On the topic of novel investments, I spoke to a guy the other day that bought a few bottles of old French wine (Bordeaux I think) at auction, and sold them a few years later for about 5x what he paid for them. Risky as hell, but an interesting idea, and there can be capital gains benefits as well.

Normally building areas are much more costly than farmland or forest. If you want an even cheaper option and have lots of patience you can also buy forest clearance areas to regrow forest on them - if available.

I would not invest in luxury goods. These are high risk speculations and greatly depend on economic cycles.

569  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bolivia Bans Bitcoins! on: June 20, 2014, 01:35:26 PM
Even if this news does mean that Bolivia really banned BTC - question is, to what extent this ban could be enforced. A lot of the economy in countries like Bolivia goes on in the gray/black area. Without the gray/black economy most people there simply can not survive. The government in Bolivia certainly has a lot less effective influence on everyday life than in western countries.

Of course it would be better if they realized the positive potential of Bitcoin to grow their economy.
570  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Trojan.Ciusky.Gen13 in bitcoin-qt Wallet on: June 20, 2014, 01:19:16 PM

571  Economy / Economics / Re: Where to find historic trade data? on: June 18, 2014, 02:34:34 PM
I would like to study how the price of Bitcoins denominated in USD has developed for the past year. Is this information available somewhere?

I suppose the Bitstamp order books would be my preferred data. MtGox's books were cooked as least as early as last autumn.

If the complete order books were available that would be great. That way one could see when large walls were put in place or removed before they were filled.

No problem if you just want trade data. Go to http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/. Select exchange and time period, then click "Load raw data" at the bottom.

For complete order books I have no idea though - I don't know if any exchange stores data for the full order books for longer periods.
572  Economy / Speculation / Re: I've convinced my partner to have a bitcoin. Do I buy now or wait until morning? on: June 18, 2014, 02:17:47 PM
A lot of people in general believe the stock market and a casino are one and the same. To be honest, with their limited abilities, this might actually be true for them Tongue

Yes and I really hate this kind of attitude towards investment in general: People who never spend a single minute on getting informed about finance because of disinterest and laziness calling markets "casino", thereby proclaiming that gaining knowledge about finance is worthless and implying that their disinterest and laziness is the perfect attitude toward this topic.

It's clear and perfectly fair that people who are not interested in educating themselves get burned.
573  Economy / Speculation / Re: I've convinced my partner to have a bitcoin. Do I buy now or wait until morning? on: June 18, 2014, 10:47:37 AM
At least she didn't sell it right away. But I think she will ultimately sell at some point (maybe if price has doubled).

It takes time to develop the right mindset to realize that BTC is actually better, safer money than fiat.
574  Economy / Economics / Re: How can I get near exact predicitons for bitcoin price in the coming 48 hours ? on: June 18, 2014, 10:39:25 AM
How I can get a semi accurate predictions for bitcoin price, as I'm looking for semi accurate prediction for the coming 48 hours.

Semi accurate prediction: no problem. Accurate preditcion: impossible.

How to get a semi accurate prediction? - Just pick a random number.
575  Economy / Economics / Re: The kids will laugh about this... How international payments work on: June 18, 2014, 10:30:37 AM
Wow. I did not know international transfers were that complicated.

Things like this is why more people should worry about opponents to bitcoin.

Clearly there are a lot of people in that chain making vast amounts of money and they stand to lose a lot if bitcoin adoption really takes hold.

So all these people have a clear motivation to do whatever they can to stop the adoption of bitcoin.

I've been saying it all along.  This is the kind of thing that starts wars.

They can't stop it anymore. It has already grown over their head. People involved in banking will adopt the better system (bitcoin) and build services around it (for example escrow).

Banks that start a war against bitcoin can only loose (reputation and customers). It's wiser to adapt to the new situation.
576  Economy / Economics / Re: Recommend me some low-risk inflation beating investments. on: June 16, 2014, 08:45:43 PM
I'm looking to invest £5k into something that will outperform inflation. I already own BTC, and want to diversify into something low-risk, low-return - anything above 5%/year would be OK.

Buy forest. It has predictable returns overall (in decades) above inflation (even if not managed intensively) and is really low risk if bought at reasonable prices. However you have to have knowledge in forest management.
It also offers recreational benefits.
Cheesy

ironie des schicksals.  Roll Eyes
