681  Other / Meta / Re: Mod, please check new plagiarism: Reporting copy/pasting, please permban on: May 04, 2018, 09:58:26 PM
Bill gator's sMerit Post-Review thread got moved to Off-topic, and was instantly attacked by spambots.
...
To be thorough, I've checked all 10 posts. They're copied from earlier posts within the same thread.
...

You've made me curious about the Off topic section, I haven't read it a long time ago.
So I've started to check one of the above mentioned bots' posts and started to read a random thread....
It's horrible...
On the first page I have checked, I've found several bots, copying the last post, and they don't care about duplicating a post in a thread...
You can check this user, if you want https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1736281 and this is https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1327160.msg31917615#msg31917615 one example where it copies the last post without any effort to hide that it's copypasting....
I don't know if the Off topic worth the effort to start to dig it up (the topics and the users), I hope that the merit system will slowly make them understand that it's not the quantity but the quality which will make them rank up on the long run...

While I was posting this, DarkStar_ hit them all with red trust. Please nuke'm anyway Tongue

Does it make any difference if these account are tagged? Does any of them care about the red trust? Does the bounty campaign care about red trust? I'm not really sure that this worth the effort... I think what they really care is deleting their posts (activity decrease) or ban...
682  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How about an exchange in international waters? on: May 03, 2018, 08:23:35 PM
Any exchange dealing with fiat conversion would have to adhere to some kind of AML/KYC regulations, so no amount of water

will stop people from dealing with that. They will also have to link to some Bank for money transfers, so that would void

international protection. As previously mentioned... the only way to do that would be to create a decentralized exchange that

are not linked to the Banking system.  Roll Eyes
Does a decentralized exchange means that you can't exchange the bitcoin/alts to fiat and vice versa, but you can only exchange bitcoins to alts and back? If you don't link to banks, you don't have to follow their rules. If there's a centralized exchange (and not linked to banks) the authorities still can put a pressure on the owner of the centralized exchange. But if it's a decentralized one, authorities can't find a single person to stop the exchagne.
Do I understand it correctly?
683  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Have you ever taken out a loan against your bitcoin? I'm thinking of it. on: May 03, 2018, 08:15:05 PM
I don't want to sell my bitcoin, especially now because it's going back up and it looks like it's just going to keep rising. I just found out that there are organizations out there that allow you to get a USD loan back by your crypto. Has anyone done it? Who do you recommend. Looking for good feedback only!

I did not do it, because investing in crypto using borrowed money is very risky, and I'm not too brave to take that risk.
This is totally the opposite what you have written in your post.
OP talks about getting a USD loan and the collateral would be his existing bitcoins, so it's not about getting a loan and buying bitcoins because he already owns the bitcoins.
684  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Running bitcoin node with LN hub on a Raspberry Pi 3 on: May 02, 2018, 08:39:17 PM
really nice. thank you for sharing all this. as soon as i find the time i will try it too. i have an unused pi waiting to be connected. btw: which post should I merit...  Tongue
Thanks Smiley Of course, all of them Tongue

btw: a first question. i once had a core node running. but the pi was so slow and it wasent able to be up to date with the chain. do you have this problem too?
So you mean you have started to run a full node on the pi, let it download the whole chain and sync it afterwards? It takes week or so, because of the size of the blockchain and the realatively slow processor of the PI.
Usually the solution is to run first a full node on a windows/linux PC (with a powerful processor) and let it download and sync the blockchain to an external USB connected HDD.
As soon as it has finished the sync (takes days, still) you can detach the HDD and attach it to the PI and voilá, the PI has to do nothing but continue to sync the daily changes which it can handle more easily.
If you have an older PI, with a slower processor, search for the model if it worths the effort to try to build it, because of the minimal speed requirements.
685  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Running bitcoin node with LN hub on a Raspberry Pi 3 on: May 02, 2018, 08:04:24 PM
So, I had enough trying to locate a working neutrino compatible node for the LN mainnet (I don't want to run a full node on the raspberry PI, because this is the point of the neutrino node).
So I switched to testnet and voilá...
Code:
 lnd –bitcoin.active –bitcoin.testnet –debuglevel=debug –bitcoin.node=neutrino --noencryptwallet --neutrino.connect=faucet.lightning.community
It's running (OK, still "Catching up block hashes"), but at least there's no problem with finding proper nodes to connect to.
So I'll start now with testnet and later on with the mainnet...
686  Other / Meta / Re: Auto-lock of topics after a week or 100 posts to solve spammer problem? on: May 02, 2018, 07:50:25 PM
Then I'm afraid we'll have many similar topics and bunch of locked ones. I don't know which is better, avoiding this monstrous spam threads with 100+ pages or seeing many similar ones crowding Altcoin and Bitcoin sections.
This is why we should not let every newbie to open several threads daily, and:
1.) they will be forced to go to the beginner's board to open topics and we can redirect mods from the discussion boards to the beginner's board to have a look at the new topics (newbie or merit jail), or
2.) they will be only allowed to open 1 topic daily/weekly (if there's really important to mention, and there's no specific topic already, not just a new spam topic)

687  Other / Meta / Re: Merit is a proof of brain concept on: May 01, 2018, 07:27:27 PM
Higher ranking users kept saying we should shut up and stop ranting about the merit system but they did not experience it in the first place. Sure, having a merit system may reflect on the capability of a user to create useful posts, but how about the responsibility of those who own sMerit? Who has the eagerness to read replies in a thread and give merit? It's actually too hard and a matter of luck. No matter how you construct posts, if no one who has sMerit will recognize it, you can't get one.
So I consider myself as a higher ranked user, as I'm at the Hero rank right now. (I haven't told anyone to shut up (yet), if they moan about the merits system). The point is, I do experience the merit system, because I was just 1 or 2 activity periods away from the activity minimum of the Legendary rank when the merit system popped up. Now I need to gather 500 merits to become a Legendary, but that's life. I've already managed to gather 10% of the merits needed, and I can tell you that it's not easy (it's difficult) for a higher ranked user as well.
I think the difficulty to gain a merit for a post is totally the same for a newbie and for a higher ranked member, because they need to deliver quality content in the post and it doesn't matter if the user is a newbie or a Legendary, the only thing that counts is the quality of the actual post.
There are also merit threads where sMerit holders do post reviews and they give away some merits for those who deserves that, and those few merits are usually enough for a newbie to rank up in time to jr. or even to member rank. If you really think that you don't get merits because noone is interested in giving out the sMerits, you should try those sMerit giveaway threads, they will be happy to analyze your post quality and will give you a merit if your post quality is fine for them.
688  Other / Meta / Re: Auto-lock of topics after a week or 100 posts to solve spammer problem? on: May 01, 2018, 10:56:42 AM
How is it possible to force the bounty managers to allow only quality posts in their campaign?

The only way is to issue punishments to those that don't meet an acceptable standard. If it's clear that campaigns aren't doing enough or nothing at all then they should receive bans on their accounts, their signatures blacklisted, and threads trashed. It's privilege for users to be able to announce their coins here for free but it shouldn't be exploited or taken advantage of and ICO campaigns really should start pulling their weight otherwise they should face the consequences. If there's punishments for those that do little to nothing people will soon take notice and start doing what they should.
I can fully agree with this. Who will decide and when if this can be started?
If we manage to somehow stop the campaign managers who allow spammers to post their one liners everywhere, we can get rid of the major part of the spam.
Is it possible to somehow create statistics from the reported posts and connect the signature/bounty campaign they take part in? The bounty campaign that receives the most reported post e.g. in a week should have the manager punished somehow, and after the first few punishment, the news will spread and hopefully make managers to stop what they were doing or to adapt themselves to the new requirements.
I really hope that this is possible.
689  Other / Meta / Re: Auto-lock of topics after a week or 100 posts to solve spammer problem? on: May 01, 2018, 10:29:15 AM
...

This isn't really about old topics being bumped but spam mega threads that are just populated by your average bounty hunter who is here just to churn out his one liners for payment. The sad thing is, even good discussion threads can get turned into these so there isn't really any solutions other than to make sure campaign managers don't pay for generic responses in spam threads. If they didn't they'd stop getting made.
This is true, usually I read the topics for the first 10 or 20 posts, because after all the newbies start to post their oneliner smart thoughts (which usually have no useful information, or totally misleading...)

In connection with the Newbie Jail, as I've read in meta topics this was also proposed but there were some answers that it won't be implemented again.
Also there were some posts about a similar thing, a so called Merit Jail, and I would support this, not to let the 0Merited newbies and other spammers (on any rank, with the default merit count) post in serious threads, but only in ANN and Off topic or somewhere where they don't disturb the serious members.
I know that somehow we need to solve the problem of the few newbies who really want to join in the serious discussions (and are not spammers), but I hope that somehow we will find a solution for this sooner (and not later...).

How is it possible to force the bounty managers to allow only quality posts in their campaign?
690  Other / Meta / Re: It's no wonder we are infested with bounty and airdrop spammers on: May 01, 2018, 07:34:01 AM
...
He recently did that with the Politics & Society admin picking thread.
What if it could be a paid gig? Each time you report something that is legitimately BS, you get paid a small amout of btc. Kinda like a faucet.
But not everyone can do this, maybe a select group of people who are not biased against signature renting but do not have paid signature spots themselves.

Makes sense?
Last time I proposed to give some merits for reporting e.g. 20 copypasters, the answer was spammers would register new accounts to copypaste and they will report them just to gain the merit...
The same can apply if we give payment for reporting posts...
But this can work if there will be really only a selected group of people (or selected by a minimum merit count) who will be able to report for payment... and this will motivate members to earn merits, because it can lead them to another kind of payment job, the reporter...
691  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Paypal chargeback on: May 01, 2018, 06:45:29 AM
There must be a way. Its my hard earned money I can not afford to lose. Please someone anyone you can private message me if you like just
give me some tips to prevent losing my money as its under dispute now.
If the buyer is from a different country, you can do nearly nothing. If he's from the same country, you can try the police, but that's really hard to prove what has happened.
Paypal won't care about your problem, because of the Friends and family, as it's not a payment sent to a merchant...
692  Other / Meta / Auto-lock of topics after a week or 100 posts to solve spammer problem? on: May 01, 2018, 06:33:39 AM
I read the Bitcoin Discussion board most of the time, and my observation is that if a there's no post in a topic for a few days (a week, maybe), than the topic is over and noone will reply to it, only spammers who don't have any problem with replying to topics after years of no activity in the topic...
Also, if a topic has about 100 (or 50 or 250 or I don't know the exact post count) posts already, most of the information has already been posted and normal members won't have anything to add to the discussion, but the spammers has of course...
So why not auto lock the threads after reaching the 100 replies (or more if needed or if there's no activity for a week) and only open back if someone writes a decent post and asks the topic's moderator to let him post that into the locked topic and the moderator will open the thread again for e.g. 2 days again.
Any thoughts how spammers could exploit this idea? Will this cause opening much more spam threads to have enough topics to spam, if a topic auto-locks after 100 posts?
693  Other / Meta / Re: It's no wonder we are infested with bounty and airdrop spammers on: May 01, 2018, 06:12:20 AM
My personal favourites are when newbies (or jr.members) copy 2 sentences from an earlier post from the same page of the topic... If they made the effort to search for a similar topics and copy something from the posts found there, it would be much difficult to spot them, but they simply don't care...

I think those ones might be bots. Copying from the same thread is their way of making it on-topic. They don't seem to realise that anyone who is following the thread and reading will spot it instantly.

That could be because most of the members also don't care about reporting these kind of posts (as long as there's nothing they can gain when they report something e.g. some extra activity points or anything else....) I don't know how many members report spam posts, but I think it's less than a 100, but if someone has statistics about it, I'm really interested...
The other thing can be that most of the members (spammers, but not bots) don't really read back when they post something, (because it's so obvious to spot these bots(?) when they copy something from a few posts above...) so they don't realize that bots are copypasteing parts of other posts...
694  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reminder: You can buy stuff with bitcoin. on: April 30, 2018, 09:06:37 PM
...
As of now, most of us have to cash out Bitcoins into the fiat currency in order to spend it but that's definitely not the Satoshi's expectations for Bitcoin.
Unfortunately since VISA has ended the partnership with the bitcoin (or other crypto) connected card issuer companies, you can only spend your coins after you have cashed them out. I know that when someone was using the bitcoin backed VISA debit card at the merchants, the card issuer has exchanged the bitcoins in the wallet on the fly, and the merchant has received the exchanged fiat equivalent amount, but that time you had to exchange the exact amount and not a bigger sum at once.
These days, merchants usually use bitpay to exchange the bitcoin payments, because it's easier for them if they don't have to deal with bitcoins directly, but as long as they will be able to use bitcoins to pay some of their costs directly with them, it would change the current situation. But until that happens, bitpay and the similar payment processors will exchange the bitcoins and the circulation of bitcoin will stop at the merchants.
695  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why are banks and governments scared of Bitcoin? on: April 30, 2018, 08:52:32 PM
Governments are afraid of losing their tax revenues as they would not be able to trace the bitcoin transactions. So they are keen to ban cryptos.
...
Governments can gain even more tax revenue if they don't ban cryptos but regulate them. Just imagine, if they will tax it with a bit higher tax rate compared to the wages and other 'normal' incomes, average people will be happy with it, if they can 'legalize' their bitcoins for a little tax.
And the bitcoin transactions are easily traceable, the only question is if they can link the users to specific addresses. This can be done easily, if someone pays online with bitcoin for some goods and he makes the goods shipped to his address.... also exchanges are forced to implement KYC and AML rules, so goverments should not afraid of the anonimity of bitcoin...

Recently I reported over a dozen of such cases on a daily basis and my result is more as 300 reports with 99% accuracy. I found all kind of forum rules abuse spam, off-topic, merit trading, account farming, spam bots, not in English, ref links, only quotes, plagiarism, scam, etc.
One piece of advice: don't search for them, just read threads you're interested in. You'll find them without searching for them.

That's really true, don't rush for the bad posts, they'll show up anyway...

So many countries now were prohibiting the use of virtual cryptocurrencies. And to think that many unemployed individuals were beginning to uplift their way of living because of their dealings with cryptocurrencies. Banks doesn't expressly say why it is banning the use of Bitcoin.
What do you think is the reason behind this?
Bitcoin is basically a threat or a big competitor for banks nd government. Bitcoin brings fair opportunities for common individuals. Anyone can join and invest for as long as he is intetested and he has the capital. Also the transaction is open to all it is hassle free safe and convenient compared to bank where every transactions is in constant scrutiny. This is the reason why bitcoin becomes popular and widely use by many people all over the world and with this banks and government are seeing bitcoin as a threat and a competitor especially that they cannot control nor profit from it.

One of the core principles of Bitcoin is that it is a decentralized system. There is no governing authority over the Bitcoin platform. This ideology outlined in the original white papers played an integral part in its success. I believe that for many reasons, it is important to maintain this platform for any cryptocurrency. This means that at no point should cryptocurrency become regulated. I think that it is important to recognize that accountability and regulation are not always the same.  Cryptocurrency can by nature remain unregulated while at the same time allowing for individuals to be held accountable.

There is a common misconception that cryptocurrency exists solely to facilitate criminal or nefarious transactions. The unregulated frontier of these new digital currencies brings a whole new area of consequences. There certainly are many real threats to having an unregulated currency. These threats can however be mitigated if individauls commit to identifying and neutralizing them.

Privacy is an important part of cryptocurrency that should not be compromised. An individual waives that right to privacy any time they accept or send their cryptocurrency to an individual. Any individual with enough motivation could in theory act as their own authority to hold individuals accountable for their actions. The question should not be 'How do we regulate', but instead 'How do we hold individuals accountable for their actions'. It is up to each individual sending or receiving cryptocurrency to determine whether or not there is a need to do hold that individual accountable.

698  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Government/ bank backed cryptocurrency vs bitcoin on: April 30, 2018, 08:19:03 PM
Most banks and other financial institutions have cards already and online banking features already. Blockchain is the future and of course they will also adopt it. Sooner than later we can see them having their own blockchains and who knows some will just sign partnerships and collaborate on some other existing crypto projects.
Technically speaking, there's no need for a bank to start a new cryptocurrency. I think they also don't have the authorization to create a currency in their country. The only one who can create a cryptocurrency for a country is the central bank.
Banks in a country can change their backend system to a blockchain based one, to cut the costs and to make things happen faster in the system, but this don't mean that they create a currency, they just develop a new system to handle existing digital fiat, but it's the same currency.
699  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banks VS Crytpo; The Good, Bad & Ugly of the Current Banking World. on: April 30, 2018, 08:07:33 PM
...
Kind of but I don't think it is all doom and gloom for the banks. They have already been established for a couple hundred years which gives them a huge advantage. Despite the fact I think Bitcoin will be adopted at a grand level, I still don't see a way to move forward without banks. I doubt everybody in the older generation will give them up and it will take 50 years and above to eradicate them slowly from society I feel like.
Blockchain and bitcoin is a kind of danger for banks, but not for their whole business. Bitcoin or the other cryptos now only makes competition to the wire transfers of banks, so banks won't go bankrupt because of bitcoin or cryptos on the short run. E.g. Paypal is a huge organization and it's a kind of older one, it also a competitor of the international wire transfers but banks are still happy and healthy (from this point of view) so as long as cryptos won't make competition for the other services of the banks, it won't make them serious headache on the short run

~and we follow the logic proposed by LoyceV then it simply means that banned Sr.Member can now create 11 accounts and will lurk in all mega spam threads for an year ( to gather activity more than his Sr. member account.).

Do you really think these spammers are going to spend a year to get one account back?

Let's set them a time limit for reporting those accounts, like 1 month or 1 activity period. Both of the time limits are long enough to let them search for the other copypasters and report them. If someone really wants to get back the original account, this time should be enough if they try it hard... But I also don't think that they will care about one lost account, because I think they have a few others...
