7761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Some BTC addresses start with a "3" on: February 11, 2015, 10:43:08 AM
they are multisignature adresses! now bitstamp uses that type of adresses

Does that guarantee that they wont lose funds ever again ?
No. If an attacker were to have at least two of the private keys associated with bitstamp's mltisig address(es) then they could steal their funds, although it would be less likely that an attacker would be able to do so.

As mentioned many times above an address starting with a 3 is a multisg address
That scenario is highly unlikely to happen. If a attacker gain access to the server, the attacker would only gain access to one of the key. To steal the funds, the attacker would have to go through bitgo's check. If invalidated, the attack will fail. Technically this is safe if done right. Eg. Keeping the third key safe in case anything happens.
7762  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Blockchain vs Electrum on: February 10, 2015, 04:45:26 PM
What is the master public key on electrum?  I just noticed this.  Do i need to have this written down?

would like to know this soon.

thank you.
Master public key is a key which allows users to generate a address but they cannot send it, most commonly used on web service to prevent coins loss if a hack happens. You can only spend it on the computer which contains the private seed/main wallet with the private keys. The seed can generate private keys and address hash however, the MPK can only generate public keys. Without the seed, no one will be able to get your coins even with your MPK.
7763  Other / Meta / Re: Just noticed I had negative trust while I've never traded with anyone here on: February 10, 2015, 11:55:41 AM
I deleted someone's off topic post in a self-moderated thread and he gives me a negative trust rating. Isn't that rating for people who exchange goods or something?
That can be given by anyone even if they haven't trade with you before. Since this forum promotes free speech, mods do not interfere with the trust ratings and you have to get the person who gave you the trust to remove the trust rating.
7764  Other / Meta / Re: avatar on: February 10, 2015, 11:51:29 AM
How can i change my avatar. I keep seeing a message that its not possible!?  Huh
Due to a forum hack that happened some time ago, the avatar was disabled due to security concerns. However, old members who had avatars before the hack will still have their avatar. Hopefully, we can change avatar in the next forum upgrade.
7765  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Feasible hashrate for solo mining? on: February 10, 2015, 11:49:42 AM
There is no accurate numbers so do take these for reference only. Since difficulty changes every two weeks, you would have to buy more hardware every now and then to ensure that you have more chance of actually finding a block. Varience would most likely affect your payouts, at times, the payout may be zero and at other times the payout may be more than expected. It will even out on the long run however.
7766  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitoins wont transfer to bitcoin-qt wallet; no idea what to do on: February 10, 2015, 10:32:10 AM
If you have 0 connections, create a bitcoin.conf file at the data directory, find some nodes. And add this into the file, addnode=[IP] . Where IP is the IP address of the node. Try to choose a node that is closest to use. Use the link BitJack provided to find nodes close to you.
7767  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What a mistake.... on: February 10, 2015, 10:25:05 AM
Find a SHA-256 algorithm based coin if you can't find a buyer of that miner. If you can't find a good altcoin to mine, you're better off selling that miner to another person.

Can you suggest at least ONE good alt coin good for mining? I have a feeling that all every alt coin now is just pump and dump scheme and we won't be seeing another dogecoin anytime soon.
Because everyone knows bitcoin is not profitable, if a SHA256 coins become more profitable, the difficulty will rise very fast. Most altcoins now wants to be different from Bitcoin and have ASIC resistance as those who have ASICs would have more coins than those who dont.
7768  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I "protect" my wallet on: February 10, 2015, 10:17:07 AM
store your coins in wallet local
download wallet armory.

yeahh besides saving on blockchain + 2FA, just also save on local web exchanger and it is very safe, and has been reliable Smiley

I will not leave any significant amount on any online service and exchange is even worst. You can have 2FA enabled, but when they close bussines .... Huh

I trust in Paper wallet printed in good quality printer and laminated.
True but you could also get backups from the wallet provider(most probably) online wallets like blockchain.info allows user to export backups. It can be a hassle to scan paper wallet everytime you use it and you would have a hard time searching for it due to its size.
7769  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why people think cheap of those who say they want to get rich from bitcoin! on: February 10, 2015, 08:41:19 AM
Most of them don't understand bitcoin and they would naturally think that it is a ponzi scheme which will cause people to lose money or some operation to harass processing power. This isn't the case however, since the source code is open for everyone to review.
7770  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Blockchain vs Electrum on: February 10, 2015, 05:33:16 AM
-snip-

Are you talking about blockchain.info ? I don't suggest it... instead it is better greenAddress.it (multiSig + 2FA+ istant confirm). What do you want more? However also electrum it is a good desktop wallet.

Isn't greenaddress in the end just like another on-line wallet? I don't know much about it. Does the user gets his private keys? How is it more secured than blockchain?
It's really just your preference, however, greenaddress does offer better security and features. Greenaddress allows you to setup a transaction limit and will limit your transaction volume. If your account gets hacked, the hacker will not be able to make more transaction than what you specified. Also, blockchain.info has some security holes before.

Thanks for the replies. The node has now finished downloading the block chain, and when I did a quick bitcoind getinfo, I realized that I had only 26 connections..

You have to give It time for people to discover and connect to your node. Anything above 8 means that you are currently having incoming connections which is already contributing to the network.
7772  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Electrum LTC and Trojn? on: February 09, 2015, 10:46:33 PM
Avast kill it!  Grin
I dont know what is this. Mb this is problem of new base of antivirus Avast or.......  Huh
False positive happens nearly all the time, dont be alarmed if you see a virus on official files. Always make sure to check the checksums and download from the official site and you will be free from viruses. It would also be good if you could review source code and compile it yourself to ensure that it is free from viruses
7773  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Lost double encryption password on blockchain.info, now what? on: February 09, 2015, 02:57:40 PM
do u know anything about the password? i searched and found that there's a place called Wallet Recovery Services. heres the link to there site: http://www.walletrecoveryservices.com

maybe if you know some of your password then can help you get it back but i don't know about a secondary password on blockchain, hopefully they can work on that too.
Thats only for desktop wallets or if the OP has a backup. It is impossible if OP secured the backup with double encryption.

OP can try to contact support or the password can be reset by using the memoric phrase first seen when creating your wallet.
7774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: My first bitcoin node on: February 09, 2015, 01:11:03 PM
Great job for setting up the node.

Having a powerful computer would allow more incoming peers to sync and get blocks from you. The default max connection is 125. You can always allow more peers to connect by adding
Code:
maxconnections=n
to your config where n is the maximum amount of peers to connect to you.
7775  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Blockchain Security Questions on: February 09, 2015, 12:56:17 PM
Blocking TOR IPs is always a good idea however, if you are in a situation which you can only use TOR to access internet, you can't access the wallet as you have blocked the IP. If you whitelist and restrict IP, you would not be able to access your wallet if you go anywhere else and the network don't have the same IP as the whitelisted one. Do not do this if your address is dynamic as the IP will change.

Blocking tor probably doesn't matter much. If someone tries to log in via tor and they can't they'll just find a proxy that they can.
True but tor is more anonymous than open proxies. They are also easier to setup and require 0 trust. It really doesn't matter if 2FA is used as hackers won't probably crack your 2FA and password due to the automatic locks after a few failed attempts.
7776  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New to altcoins on: February 09, 2015, 12:33:52 PM
dose xapo wallet can store the altcoins too

Yes. Xapo wallet holds bits and 1000 bits is approximately equal to $0.2 and 0.001 BTC. You get some bits free while joining too.
Xapo wallet does not allow the storage of our alt coins. You may have mistaken bits(0.000001BTC) for another altcoin. It is only a domination of Bitcoin like mbtc and satoshi.
7777  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Blockchain Security Questions on: February 09, 2015, 12:28:07 PM

5.  Do i block TOR ip addresses?

6.  IP address whitelist... i see my current ip.  Do i just leave this blank?

7.  Should i restrict to whitelisted ip addreses only?  If i do.. then isn't that going to make it really safe?
Blocking TOR IPs is always a good idea however, if you are in a situation which you can only use TOR to access internet, you can't access the wallet as you have blocked the IP. If you whitelist and restrict IP, you would not be able to access your wallet if you go anywhere else and the network don't have the same IP as the whitelisted one. Do not do this if your address is dynamic as the IP will change.
Okay i downloaded the backup blockchain to my computer.  Then i sent it to my email address.  Would that be fine?  I know its bad if your email gets hacked but i put a very strong password for my email.  Thoughts on this?  Also im unsure but this isn't the 12 word phrase as backup right?
It is better to keep a physical backup, if the email ever goes down or if your account gets suspended, you will be able to get them back.
7778  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cointellect - Scam or Not? on: February 09, 2015, 12:16:04 PM
its not a scam i have paidd out severall times
Perhaps you don't understand what is a ponzi scheme. A ponzi scheme is a operation that pays you with the next person's deposit. They will pay you till people stop depositing and they can run away with your money or just don't pay you. Either way, you lose money.
7779  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin Generator? on: February 09, 2015, 12:14:05 PM
I have heard about one bitcoin generator [SCAMLINKREMOVED] anyone used it before?
That is a blatant scanning attempt, it is impossible to make 0.2BTC daily with any computer. It is just a well designed scam who target people who have no knowledge of Bitcoin. If it works, would the price still be $200?
7780  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cointellect - Scam or Not? on: February 09, 2015, 12:11:00 PM
It's actually sound like a ponzi scheme if customers can't withdraw and the company would just make up excuses. The company have been really shady in the history of their operation. I was required to verify my credit card due to me logging in through a proxy/vpn which I obviously didn't. I didn't bother to verify and my money has been stuck there since then.
