782  Other / Politics & Society / Re: HOW WILL THE COMING ECONOMIC COLLAPSE EFFECT BITCOIN? on: January 19, 2015, 07:42:15 PM
I hope I am wrong but Russia and the USA are looking like they will go to war sometime soon. Almost seems inevitable.

many people believe including me that this will happen and it does seem inevitable.

Yes, of course people will go to war sometimes.
But when? That's the question.
Could take another thousand years.

I say war within the next 8 months. Calling it here.

Ok, quote you on that. What's the stake? Grin
Let's bet something on it, just for fun.

It is likely to happen but I can't say it is inevitable. There must be clever people somewhere in these governments.
Such a war will destroy not only Russia but also Europe and the US. There will be no winners. China can be damaged too.

Hahahaha Grin Grin
Good one. Clever people. ROTFLMAO.
They don't give a fuck about you (us). They only care about your fear. And that's something they can count on so to see. (no offend)

I know this argument is old, over-user and kinda irritating. But seriously cash is the most anonymous form of payment available Tongue . BTC would not be my choice if I wanted to stay truly anonymous
I think you do, when you want to do a anonymous trade with someone on the other side of the globe.
Or would you buy a ticket each time?
784  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can you run a full node on a raspberry pi? on: January 19, 2015, 07:15:32 PM
Problem is full nodes requires HD space and RAM.

THink it is possible, but not sure if it would be the best idea

512 should be plenty of ram for it

A couple of persons said their full nodes were using more than that in https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=659040.0.
Are you sure 512 MB RAM is enough for a full node?

Here is an interessesting talk about the specs, especially on a raspberry pi
Seems to be running without problem.

Quote
You can run a Raspberry Pi with bitcoind no problem. I have several Pi's running bitcoind in various locations and some of them have over 100 connections. Use a 64GB flash card and make sure you have a 512MB swap file. The only limitation you will find is your broadband upload speed , the Pi or it's flashcard will not be the bottlekneck. Use a good quality flash card like Sandisk etc. Also tell your router to route incoming connections on port 8333 to your Pi's IP address. The reason the only limitation is your broadband upload speed is because of parasitic loads such as new users trying to upload the entire blockchain from your Pi. If you do this , try to set your Pi up with blockcahin already loaded onto flash or SSD otherwise it will take some time to synchronise.

I would still recommend to skip the flash card and go for an SSD
Don't put too many other services on the device also
785  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin - "Currency of Child Molesters" on: January 19, 2015, 07:12:16 PM
Yep. We officially have an image problem. Now what do we do about fixing it?
Alcohol also have an image problem.
There is no reason to fix it.

It'll sort itself out.
We all know how the prohibition fixed itself

In the end everyone wants to get drunk anyway Wink
786  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Are Miners free to exclude whatever transactions they want? on: January 19, 2015, 07:09:55 PM
Miners can include and exclude whatever transaction they want from the blocks they mine. If they want to build upon previous blocks, though, they have to accept the whole block as-is.

What this means in practice is that each individual miner has very little control over what ends up in the blockchain. Even if e.g. the top 80% of hash power decided to exclude your transactions from their blocks, that'd just mean you have to wait 5 times as long for your first confirmation. Unless they're willing to reject blocks that contain your transaction; this could be a sort of 51% attack, but it's only effective if the colluding miners control >50% of the hash power.

So to summarize, it's a non issue.
Thanks for clearing it up.
787  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin - "Currency of Child Molesters" on: January 19, 2015, 07:04:15 PM
Despite claims of revolutionary technology and growing acceptance, as bitcoin price collapses it becomes increasingly clear that the only novel use for bitcoin is for child molesters and sex offenders.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-09/bitcoin-payments-by-pedophiles-frustrate-child-porn-fight.html

“The emergence of bitcoins as payment for child sexual abuse represents the newest challenge in the fight” against child pornography, said Sarah Smith, a researcher at the IWF. “This is just the beginning.”

The currency provides “commercial child sexual abuse website operators with a method to revitalize their payment stream,” said John Shehan, executive director of the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, Virginia.

So congratulations bitcoiners, at best you are strengthening a system widely used to sexually victimize children, and at worst you are actively aiding and abetting sex offenders. Please be advised bitcoiners, "Ayn Rand and Satoshi told me it was okay" is not a legal defense in court. Cheers!  Grin

I'm using my 52" Sony Bravia with a 30' hdmi cable, wireless keyboard/mouse. I've also tried bringing the computer in the living room and using a 6' hdmi cable with no change. I've never had an issue with my dvd or satellite receiver using hdmi.

Sometimes when I go to a site with bright solid colors it will start blinking on and off right away, causing a need to reboot then it's fine. Before Mint went down it often seemed to start the moment I logged in - might have been all the bright green. Bittrex seems to get it going too sometimes.
Any ideas of settings I should look at?

Have you tried another graphical card?

Yes, all the things I've tried are in my op.
Sorry, missed it.

Anyone?

You could try to run your computer with a linux dvd for a few days just to see how stable it is. To rule out the OS and drivers

First rule of Bitcoin: you don't talk about how many bitcoins you have.

Is it? I thought first rule of Bitcoin if you dont give your private key to noone.

OK.

First rule: You don't give your private key to anyone.
Second rule: You don't talk about how many bitcoins you have.

790  Economy / Services / Re: [Bounty] 0.5 bitcoin in total for completing a simple exchange tutorial on: January 19, 2015, 04:25:21 PM
Hi all,

One of my friends is opening some business related to Bitcoin, while his customers need some tutorials about using the exchanges. However, it's a bit difficult and time-taking to pass the exchanges' verification, so he would like to ask some guys that already have accounts to complete a simple tutorial.

It should contain text and screenshots about:
1. Register an account
2. Deposit fiat money to the exchanges
3. Buy & sell bitcoin
4. Withdraw fiat money

The exchanges in the list are:
1. Bitstamp
2. btc-e
3. Coinbase
4. kraken
5. itBit
6. Bitfinex
7. ANX
8. CaVirtex

Please pm me if you're interested, remarking the exchanges that you choose. For each exchange, I'll send you 0.5/8 = 0.0625 bitcoin.

Thanks a lot.

I'm not sure if I'm interested yet.
If you are able to do escrow, you might get more response.

Interesting read from Joichi Ito, Director of the MIT Media Lab.  Bitcoin evolution parallels to the dawn of the Internet are striking, but will Bitcoin really prove to be as disruptive and transformative long term...only time will tell...

Why Bitcoin is and isn't like the Internet

TL;DR, sorry.

There is only one major thing different in my opinion and that is the fact there is personal value involved.
The internet is in many aspect comparable, but not with the personal value aspect.

You could argue that it is exactly the opposite.
793  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bootstrap.dat - Bitcoin Core ? on: January 19, 2015, 04:13:23 PM
and not sure what you mean connected to nodes

Bottom right corner you have a progressbar red, yellow and green.
If you hover with your mouse it should tell you the number of nodes connected to you.
If it is zero it's bad. Usually it's 8 after a few minutes.
Could be higer, but then you have to forward some ports to your computer
794  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can you run a full node on a raspberry pi? on: January 19, 2015, 03:42:14 PM
Raspberry pi is doesn't have that much processing power. Even if it can run a full node, it wouldn't be very fast when the blockchain is on a sdcard.
When you put the blockchain on a SD card it's very soon gone because of the wear.
You can put your OS on an SD card, put the blockchain on a SSD.

Also, you should limit the number of nodes connecting to the raspberry pi to not overkill it.
Then it would run fine I guess

It's not the biggest robbery.
There were much more coins stolen in the past.
The problem is that you count bitcoins in dollars

its the biggest one i know and it isnt about you transfer the amount in dollers the value is still the same

Well,.. what was it,.. Come, help me,.. something with an "x"
Ahh, now I know. It was MtGox! Grin
Far more coins stolen, both in coin count as in dollar terms
796  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can you run a full node on a raspberry pi? on: January 19, 2015, 03:20:28 PM
I have a raspberry pi, and could try.
How much RAM does the full client need?

But I would have to invest into a 32GB SD card.

What about replacing the blockchain
by something dramatically smaller?

Right now we need all years old transactions on our HDs,
because there is no other way of confirming a new TX.

Would it be possible to to create a bitcoin address & balances archive
from the full blockchain, which assigns the bitcoins of all past transactions
to all the target addresses ... and keeps only those balances?

With every new confirmed transaction
that address+balance archive would be updated.

Perhaps include a "superhash" into that address archive
to prove that all blocks since block 0 until the last one
have been parsed?

Or is all that a heretic suggestion?

Gmaxwell told me bitcoin version 0.11 will have some lightweight features for low end machines built in.
This was the thread

I want to run a node on  a MK802 google android (ARM) TV stick.
797  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bootstrap.dat - Bitcoin Core ? on: January 19, 2015, 03:17:05 PM
It is a good sign, the client is currently verifying every block in the bootstrap to ensure the authenticity of the blocks. Depending on the age of the bootstrap, you may need to download a few more blocks before you would be up to date with the network.

I went to school and came back , found my PC off (probably my dad turned it off)
anyway ... the Bootstrap file got renamed from Bootstrap.dat to Bootstrap.dat.old and now when I run the Bitcoin Core it says : "No Block Source available ..."

What should I do , should I rename the Bootstrap from old to normal once again ?

From my memory, when the file got renamed, the process was completed.
Are you connected to nodes? You're sure you don't have some firewall activated somewhere?

How do you know for sure? Were you there when it happened?
